Cisco Certifications Explained for Beginners

Cisco's certification system looks intimidating from the outside — a wall of acronyms, exam codes and recently renamed tracks. Underneath, it is organised around two simple ideas. First, levels: how advanced you are, from entry-level support technician to recognised expert. Second, tracks: which technology area you specialise in, from enterprise networking to security operations to automation. Every Cisco certification is a combination of one level and one track, and once you can read that grid, the entire catalogue makes sense.

Who is Cisco, and why do its certifications matter?

Cisco is one of the world's largest manufacturers of networking equipment — the routers, switches, firewalls and wireless systems that businesses run their networks on. Because so much of the world's enterprise infrastructure is built on Cisco hardware and software, Cisco's own certification programme became a de facto standard for the networking profession. When an employer sees a Cisco certification, they are seeing evidence that a candidate passed a proctored, timed exam on a published list of topics — not just a course-completion badge.

Cisco exams are delivered through Pearson VUE, either at physical test centres or online with remote proctoring (the entry-level CCST exams go through Certiport, a Pearson VUE company, instead). You study, book, sit the exam, and if you pass, the certification is yours — there is no interview, project submission or membership requirement.

The four Cisco certification levels

Think of the levels as rungs on a ladder. As of August 2026 there are four that matter to most people.

Entry: CCST (Cisco Certified Support Technician)

The CCST certifications are Cisco's true beginner tier, positioned below the CCNA. There are CCST exams for Networking and for Cybersecurity, each a single, roughly 50-minute exam of multiple-choice, multi-select and drag-and-drop questions, priced at US $125 (varying by country). They have no prerequisites and are delivered through Certiport testing centres, which are often schools and colleges — a clue to the audience: students and career changers proving baseline knowledge, often before or during a first IT job.

Associate: CCNA and its track siblings

The associate level is where most professional careers start, and the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) is the most recognised certification Cisco offers — a single written exam, currently the 200-301, covering networking fundamentals broadly. Since the February 2026 naming alignment, the associate level also includes CCNA Automation (the former DevNet Associate) and CCNA Cybersecurity (the former CyberOps Associate). Associate exams have no formal prerequisites, though Cisco suggests a year or more of exposure to networks before attempting the CCNA. Professional: the CCNP family

Professional-level certifications — Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) — are aimed at people with several years of hands-on experience (Cisco suggests three to five). Every CCNP works the same way structurally: you pass one core exam for your track, plus one concentration exam you choose from that track's list. The core exam is broad; the concentration lets you specialise in something like advanced routing, SD-WAN or firewalls.

Two useful side effects of that structure are easy to miss. Passing any one of those exams earns a Cisco Certified Specialist badge on its own, so progress is recognised before the full CCNP is complete. And each track's core exam doubles as the qualifying exam for the expert level above it.

Expert: CCIE and CCDE

The Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) is among the most respected credentials in IT, and its format shows why: after passing the track's core written exam, candidates must pass an eight-hour, hands-on lab exam at a Cisco lab facility or mobile lab location. The lab costs US $1,600 per attempt (travel not included), which makes the expert level a serious financial and personal commitment as well as a technical one. The Cisco certification tracks

Levels tell you how deep; tracks tell you in what. Here is each current track and the kind of work it maps to.

Enterprise

The mainstream networking track — routing, switching, wireless and the technologies that run corporate networks. It is the direct descendant of the classic "routing and switching" path most people picture when they think of Cisco. The CCNA sits here as the generalist associate credential, with CCNP Enterprise above it and CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure (plus a separate CCIE Enterprise Wireless) at the top. Security

Network security engineering: firewalls, VPNs, identity services, secure access — designing and operating the systems that protect a network. Its professional credential is CCNP Security, built around the SCOR core exam, with CCIE Security at expert level. Note the distinction with the next track, because newcomers mix them up constantly.

Cybersecurity (formerly CyberOps)

Where the Security track is about building defences, the Cybersecurity track is about operating them — the security operations centre (SOC) world of monitoring, detecting and responding to incidents. This track has been renamed twice: CyberOps Associate became Cisco Certified Cybersecurity Associate in January 2025, and then CCNA Cybersecurity in February 2026, with the professional tier becoming CCNP Cybersecurity. Automation (formerly DevNet)

The track for managing networks with software — Python, APIs, infrastructure-as-code. On 3 February 2026 Cisco renamed the whole DevNet family: DevNet Associate is now CCNA Automation, DevNet Professional is CCNP Automation, and DevNet Expert is CCIE Automation, with existing holders recognised under the new names automatically. Data Center

Large-scale data centre infrastructure: the compute, storage networking and fabric technologies behind server farms and, increasingly, AI workloads — the track's design exam was even renamed in 2025 to reference "Traditional and AI Workloads". Runs from CCNP Data Center up to CCIE Data Center.

Collaboration

Voice, video and messaging infrastructure — the systems behind enterprise calling and conferencing. CCNP Collaboration and CCIE Collaboration form the ladder; the track was refreshed in February 2026 with updated exams and a new cloud customer-experience concentration.

Service Provider

Networking at telecom and internet-provider scale, where the technologies and design constraints differ from enterprise networks. CCNP Service Provider and CCIE Service Provider are the milestones.

Design (CCDE)

Not a full ladder but an expert-level speciality: the CCDE certifies network design judgement — choosing architectures and justifying trade-offs — rather than hands-on implementation.

A note on choosing between all of these: you do not have to pick your forever-track on day one. Cisco's structure lets you start broad (most people begin at the associate level of Enterprise, Automation or Cybersecurity) and branch later, because no track formally locks you in or out of another.

How do the certifications connect? (Hierarchy myths, corrected)

The single most persistent myth about Cisco certifications is that they are formally sequential — that you must pass CCNA before you may attempt CCNP, and CCNP before CCIE. This has been false since Cisco's February 2020 restructure. There are no formal prerequisites at any written-exam level. You could, in principle, sit a CCNP core exam tomorrow with no certifications at all.

In practice, the levels still function as a de facto sequence because the knowledge builds: professional exams assume associate-level fundamentals cold, and the CCIE lab assumes professional-level mastery. The freedom matters mainly for experienced engineers who never bothered with paper qualifications and want to enter the ladder at the level matching their skills.

Three more misconceptions worth burying:

  • "CCNP is one exam." Every CCNP is two: a core plus a chosen concentration.
  • "Cisco publishes question counts and passing scores." For most exams it does not. Numbers you see quoted online — "about 102 questions", "825 out of 1000 to pass" — are community estimates, not official figures.
  • "DevNet and CyberOps certifications were discontinued." Renamed, not discontinued, as covered above.

How long do Cisco certifications last?

All CCNA-, CCNP- and CCIE-level certifications are valid for three years. Renewal does not force you to re-sit the same exam: you can renew by passing certain other Cisco exams, by earning Continuing Education (CE) credits through approved learning activities (30 credits for a CCNA-level cert, 80 for CCNP, 120 for CCIE), or by combining the two. Helpfully, activity flows downhill — passing a higher-level exam renews your lower certifications too, so an active engineer climbing the ladder rarely renews anything deliberately. One policy every candidate should know before booking anything: if you fail a written exam, Cisco's published policy imposes a five-calendar-day wait before rebooking, and you pay the full fee again. Failed CCIE labs carry a 30-day wait.

What do Cisco exams look like?

Written exams at every level mix question formats: multiple-choice and multi-select items, drag-and-drop matching, and — particularly in the flagship associate exam — lab-style simulation items where you interact with device output rather than just picking an answer. Associate and professional core exams run around 120 minutes; concentration exams around 90. Everything is closed-book and proctored.

Frequently asked questions

Are Cisco certifications only useful in jobs that use Cisco equipment?

The exams do test Cisco-specific implementations, but most of the underlying material — IP addressing, routing concepts, security principles, automation practices — transfers to any vendor's kit. Employers treat the major Cisco credentials as evidence of general networking competence, not just product knowledge.

Can I take Cisco exams from home?

Yes — written exams are available through Pearson VUE's OnVUE online proctoring as well as at test centres. The CCIE lab exam is the exception: it must be taken in person at a Cisco lab or mobile lab location. CCST exams go through Certiport channels instead.

How much does it cost to get Cisco certified in total?

It depends on level and region: as of 2026, US list prices run $125 for a CCST exam, $300 for the CCNA, roughly $700 across a CCNP's two exams at standard professional pricing, and $2,000 minimum for a CCIE's written-plus-one-lab-attempt — before study materials, travel or any retakes. Do the 2026 renames change what I should study?

Mostly no. The Automation and Cybersecurity renames kept exam lineages intact (the former DevNet Associate even kept its 200-901 code), though Cisco refreshed some topic lists around the same time. Always study from the current official exam-topics list rather than an older course's table of contents.
