What is the CCNA certification?

You earn it by passing one exam, the 200-301, delivered through Pearson VUE either at a test centre or online via OnVUE proctoring. What does the CCNA cost in total?

The exam fee is US $300 per attempt as of 2026, varying by country and region, with taxes and fees potentially added at checkout. Three cost realities follow from Cisco's published policies:

  1. Retakes cost full price. There is no discounted resit. If you fail, you pay US $300 again.
  2. There is a mandatory wait after a fail. Cisco's testing policy imposes a five-calendar-day wait before you can rebook the same exam.
  3. The exam fee is rarely the whole budget. Courses, books, lab tools and practice materials sit on top, ranging from nearly free (self-study with free-tier resources) to well over a thousand dollars (instructor-led training). How long does the CCNA stay valid, and how do you renew?

The certification is valid for three years from the date you pass. Renewal is where Cisco's system is more flexible than many candidates expect. You can renew a CCNA by any of the following before it expires:

  • Re-passing an associate-level exam (sitting the current CCNA exam again).
  • Passing any professional-level exam — for example, a CCNP core or concentration exam. This is the natural route for people progressing up the ladder, since one exam both advances and renews.
  • Earning 30 Continuing Education (CE) credits through Cisco's CE programme — the exam-free route, built from approved learning activities. CE credits expire three years after the activity date and each credit can be claimed once.
  • A combination of CE credits and exams.

One design feature of Cisco's renewal system is genuinely elegant: any qualifying exam or CE activity renews all of your lower- and equal-level active Cisco certifications within the window, and a renewed certification extends three years from the renewal date. Someone who passes a CCNP exam two years after their CCNA does not just earn progress towards a new cert — their CCNA clock resets too.

Is the CCNA one exam or several?

One. The current CCNA is earned by passing the single 200-301 exam. Older multi-exam routes (such as the two-part ICND path) and the specialised CCNA variants were consolidated into this single exam in Cisco's 2020 restructure.

Can I take the CCNA online from home?

Yes. The 200-301 is available through Pearson VUE's OnVUE online proctoring as well as at physical test centres. Expect identity checks, a room scan and system requirements if you choose the online option.

Do I need the CCNA before taking CCNP exams?
