Studying for the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) comes down to running three activities in a loop: take in theory, prove it in a lab, and test yourself with questions — then let the question results tell you which theory to revisit. Candidates who fail the 200-301 have usually done plenty of the first activity and too little of the other two. The exam is 120 minutes of multiple-choice, multi-select, drag-and-drop and lab-style items, and those lab-style items are precisely where read-only preparation collapses.

Before choosing any resource, download the current exam topics list for 200-301 from Cisco's certification site. As of August 2026 the live version is v1.1, in effect since 20 August 2024. This matters for resource selection: v1.1 added generative AI awareness, cloud network management and machine-learning content, deepened the spanning-tree protection features (Root Guard, Loop Guard, BPDU Guard and BPDU Filter) and expanded automation, programmability and device-hardening coverage. A course or book recorded against the original 2020 topics will quietly skip material you can be examined on. Check the publication or last-updated date of everything you buy against that August 2024 revision.
The topics list also becomes your progress tracker. Print it or copy it into a document, and mark each line as you reach "could explain it and configure it". Working from the official list keeps you honest in a way that a course's own progress bar cannot, because course menus reflect what the instructor covered, not what Cisco can ask.
Theory input is where most candidates over-shop. You need exactly two things: a primary structured resource that covers the full topic list in order, and a backup that explains things differently when the primary loses you.
Your primary resource should be a complete, current CCNA course — video or text, whichever you genuinely finish things in. Video courses suit people who need to see configurations typed and topologies drawn; a full-length book from an established publisher such as Cisco Press suits people who annotate and re-read. Cisco's own ecosystem is worth checking first: Cisco U. has free-tier content and Cisco Networking Academy runs structured networking courses, though you should verify on Cisco's site what is currently free at each tier before building your plan around it. Whatever you pick, resist the urge to combine three courses "for completeness" — parallel primaries triple your hours without adding coverage, because reputable full courses map to the same official topic list.
Every candidate hits two or three topics that the primary resource fails to land — commonly subnetting, spanning tree or OSPF behaviour. That is what the backup is for: a different author's chapter or video on that single topic, consumed only when needed. The change of explanation style usually does more than a third re-read of the same page.
Passive highlighting feels like progress and produces almost none. Take notes by closing the book and writing what you remember — port numbers, command syntax, the difference between two similar protocols — then checking what you missed. For memorisation-heavy material (well-known ports, administrative distances, wireless channels, command keywords), flashcards with spaced repetition work well: a few minutes daily beats an hour weekly, because the schedule resurfaces each fact just as you are about to forget it.
If you take one thing from this article: the CCNA cannot be passed comfortably from theory alone. The exam presents lab-style and drag-and-drop items alongside multiple choice, and even the pure multiple-choice questions are easier for candidates who have typed the commands, because configuration builds a mental model that prose cannot.
Cisco Packet Tracer, Cisco's free network simulation tool, is the standard starting point for CCNA labbing — it lets you build topologies of routers, switches and endpoints and configure them with real IOS-style commands, with no hardware to buy. Following a lab walkthrough line by line teaches you to copy; the exam tests whether you can build and fix. Use a three-pass pattern for each major technology:
Lab little and often. Three 40-minute lab sessions across a week beat one three-hour marathon, because each return trip forces recall of the previous session's commands.
You cannot lab everything equally, so weight your time towards topics that are both heavily configurable and commonly examined: IPv4 and IPv6 addressing and subnetting, VLANs and trunking, spanning tree and its v1.1 protection features, EtherChannel, OSPF, static routing, NAT, DHCP, NTP, access control lists, and basic device hardening (SSH access, password policy, port security). Topics like network architecture concepts, wireless theory and AI awareness are learned from theory sources; topics in the list above are learned at a prompt.
Practice questions serve one purpose: telling you the difference between what you think you know and what you can actually answer under exam conditions. Used properly they are the highest-leverage hour in your week; used badly they become answer-memorisation that collapses on exam day, because Cisco does not publish its question pool and no practice set is the live exam.
Use them in two modes. In topic mode, after finishing a domain, answer a focused set on that domain and review every explanation — including for questions you got right, since a correct guess is a gap wearing a disguise. In exam mode, later in your preparation, sit full-length timed sessions that mirror the 120-minute format, no notes, no pausing. Score each sitting by topic area and let the weakest area dictate the next week's study — this weak-domain targeting is what converts practice sets from reassurance into direction. Two cautions. Second, do not chase a specific practice score as a magic threshold: Cisco does not publish the real passing score, so use practice results for direction and trend, not prophecy.
A few 200-301 areas deserve method-specific handling because generic study fails on them.
Subnetting is a speed skill, not a knowledge item. Learn the method once, then drill short daily sets — a handful of problems with your morning coffee — until a /26 or /29 question takes seconds. Fluency here pays out across the entire exam, because addressing appears inside questions that are nominally about routing, ACLs or troubleshooting.
Automation and programmability intimidates traditional-network candidates, but the CCNA tests awareness, not software engineering: what REST APIs, JSON and configuration management concepts are and why they matter. Read the topic list line by line and learn to the verb it uses — "explain" and "recognise" topics need understanding, not lab depth.
AI and cloud additions from v1.1 (generative AI, cloud network management, machine learning) are new enough that older materials skip them entirely — this is the strongest single reason to verify your resources are updated for the August 2024 revision.
Wireless and security fundamentals are broad-but-shallow domains where flashcards and summary notes outperform labbing. Learn the terminology precisely; many questions at this level turn on distinguishing two similar terms.

No. The 200-301 has no hands-on lab exam, and simulation in Packet Tracer covers CCNA-level configuration well. Physical or CML-based labs add realism — console cables, boot sequences, genuine IOS quirks — that helps in a job, but they are an enhancement, not a requirement, and second-hand hardware spend is optional.
Cisco does not offer a free official CCNA practice exam. Free and official-adjacent preparation exists — Cisco U. free-tier content, Cisco Networking Academy courses, and Packet Tracer for labs — but scored exam-style practice comes from third-party providers, so judge those on whether they explain answers and map questions to the official topic list.
It is a genuine either/or rather than a required sequence: Network+ (currently N10-009) is vendor-neutral and does not reach CCNA's depth of Cisco CLI configuration, and no certification is a prerequisite for the CCNA. If your goal is the CCNA, studying for it directly with the methods above is usually the shorter path.
Trend, not feeling. If your topic-mode question scores improve on second attempts at new questions, and your blank-page labs succeed without peeking, the loop is working. If scores only improve on repeated questions, you are memorising — change your question sets and add break-and-fix labs.
