The bridge from CAPM to PMP or agile credentials — what experience you need, what your CAPM already covers, and how to sequence the next three years.
Your CAPM comes with a benefit many holders never use: it permanently satisfies the 35-contact-hour education requirement for the PMP. That single fact should shape your entire next-certification plan, because it means the only thing standing between you and PMI's flagship credential is documented experience leading projects — 36 months with a four-year degree, 60 months without. The question after CAPM is therefore less "which exam next?" and more "how do I spend the next three years so an exam becomes available to me?"
Short answer: for most CAPM holders, the next certification is the PMP, and the work between now and then is accumulating and documenting project leadership experience — not collecting more entry-level certificates. Add an agile credential (PSM I, CSM, or later PMI-ACP) only if your workplace or target roles run agile delivery and you need the vocabulary and signal now. Avoid stacking a second foundational certificate that teaches what CAPM already covered.

Worth taking stock before buying anything new. The current CAPM exam tests four domains — project management fundamentals (36%), predictive methodologies (17%), agile frameworks (20%) and business analysis frameworks (27%) — so you already hold certified basics across predictive and agile approaches. What CAPM does not give you is proof you can run a project. Every sensible next step is about building exactly that.
PMP eligibility as of 2026: 36 months of experience leading projects (with a four-year degree) or 60 months (with a secondary diploma), with the education box already ticked by your CAPM. PMI's 2026 announcements mention expanded eligibility pathways, so check pmi.org for current details when you apply.
The crucial nuance: "leading projects" does not require the words "project manager" on your contract. Running a product migration as an analyst, coordinating a store refit as an operations supervisor, owning a research workstream — this counts, provided you can document what you led, when, and for how long. Start a simple experience log now (project, dates, role, responsibilities, hours); PMI's application asks for precisely this, and reconstructing it years later is the most common self-inflicted delay.
When you get near booking, timed full-length PMP practice tests are the honest readiness check: simulate the 230-minute sitting, then work your weakest domain rather than re-covering ground your CAPM already secured. PMI reports results as proficiency levels per domain, not a percentage, so per-domain practice feedback mirrors how you will actually be assessed.
If your organisation delivers with Scrum or hybrid methods, an agile credential can be worth adding during the bridge years — it signals relevance for the coordinator and delivery roles that generate your experience months. Three realistic options, in ascending order of commitment:
PSM I (Scrum.org). No course required, $200 flat per attempt, 80 questions in 60 minutes with an 85% pass mark, and the credential never expires — no renewal fees ever. The cheapest meaningful agile signal a CAPM holder can add.
CSM (Scrum Alliance). Requires a live 14–16-hour course with a Certified Scrum Trainer; course fees vary widely by trainer and region (commonly ~$250–$2,495), with the exam bundled (50 questions, 74% pass mark, two attempts included). Renews every two years with 20 SEUs plus a $100 fee. Choose it when you want taught instruction and the Scrum Alliance community rather than a self-study exam.
PMI-ACP (later). PMI's flagship agile certification — 120 questions, 180 minutes, $435 member / $495 non-member — but it carries its own agile experience requirement plus 28 hours of agile training, so for most CAPM holders it is a mid-career addition rather than the immediate next step. Note that PMI's Disciplined Agile certifications were retired in 2025, so ACP is the PMI agile route.
One caution on direction: Scrum Master is a different role from project manager — Scrum deliberately has no project manager — so treat agile credentials as complements to your PM trajectory unless you genuinely want to change lanes. If you do, which certification comes after which is a Scrum-track question rather than a CAPM one.
The project coordinator at a construction consultancy. Predictive delivery, PMO structure, a boss with a PMP. Verdict: no new certificate now. Log experience aggressively, take on scheduling and stakeholder duties, apply for PMP the month eligibility lands. An agile credential would decorate the CV without advancing the file that matters.
The junior delivery analyst at a software firm. Sprints, product owners, standups; job adverts in this niche name Scrum credentials. Verdict: PSM I within the next quarter ($200, self-study), keep logging leadership months, PMP at eligibility, and consider PMI-ACP once the agile experience requirement is met. Total extra spend before PMP: $200.
Different workplaces, same principle — the next certificate is chosen by the work around you, not by a generic ladder.
Year one: agile credential if (and only if) your environment calls for it; experience log started; PMI membership kept. Years two and three: project leadership months, PDUs banked through your PMP study, application submitted the month you qualify. That is the whole path — one deliberate exam at the end of it, not a shelf of certificates along the way. It renews rather than expires: 15 PDUs every three years plus a renewal fee keeps it active. The old rule requiring a re-exam after five years no longer applies.
If you meet ACP's agile training (28 hours) and experience requirements, yes — the credentials are independent. It makes sense only when your career is heading into agile delivery rather than a classic PM role.
Better than that: the CAPM certification itself substitutes for the entire 35-contact-hour education requirement. You document experience months only.
