Practice tests fail AZ-305 candidates for a predictable reason: they practise the wrong skill. AZ-305 (Designing Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions) is built around scenarios and case studies where several answers are technically possible and only one satisfies every stated requirement — so drilling isolated multiple-choice questions for recall trains you for an exam Microsoft isn't giving. The strategy below fixes that: it treats every practice question as a requirements-analysis exercise, sequences your mocks in three phases, and shows you how to mine your results for the signal that actually predicts a pass.

You cannot practise a format you haven't dissected. AZ-305 questions cluster into styles that each demand a distinct habit, and Microsoft's free practice assessment on Microsoft Learn — plus the official Exam Sandbox — is the reference point for how they behave on screen. (Microsoft does not publish question counts for its exams, so ignore any practice product promising to mirror "the exact number of questions.")
A case study presents a fictional organisation — existing environment, planned changes, technical requirements, business constraints — followed by a set of questions against that shared context. The costly habit is reading the questions first and skimming the case for keywords, which is precisely how distractor answers are designed to catch you.
Practise the reverse discipline every time:
That third step is the whole game. On a design exam, wrong answers are rarely nonsense — they're valid architectures for a different set of requirements.
Standalone scenario items compress the same logic into a paragraph: a situation, a goal, and options that all exist in Azure's catalogue. When practising these, ban yourself from gut answers. Even when you're sure, articulate why the three rejected options are wrong. If you can't, you got it right by luck, and luck doesn't replicate under exam conditions.
Microsoft states its exams may include interactive components, and practice time should include whatever build-list, ordering or hot-area style items your practice material offers. These punish passive recognition — you must produce the sequence or selection yourself — which makes them unusually honest indicators of real understanding.
Sequence matters more than volume. Forty questions used well beat four hundred used as a comfort blanket.
Take one untimed set of questions across all four design domains before you feel ready — expect a mediocre score, and take it deliberately. The purpose is cartography, not assessment: you're mapping which domains (identity and governance, data storage, business continuity, infrastructure) need the most study time, so your preparation weights itself against reality instead of comfort. After studying each domain, run a focused question block on just that domain, then review it with a rule that changes everything: review every question, not just the ones you missed. For each item, write one line — the requirement that decided the answer. Three outcomes are possible:
Keep a simple error log with four columns: domain, decisive requirement, cause of error, fix applied. After three or four sets, the log tells you things no score can — for instance, that half your misses come from skimming past cost constraints, not from Azure knowledge at all.
Close preparation with at least two full-length, timed, uninterrupted mock exams under exam-like conditions — no notes, no pausing, no second screen. You're now training endurance and time discipline: case studies reward slow, careful reading, which means standalone items must be answered efficiently to fund that time. In your simulations, practise a budget — a first pass answering everything you can decide quickly, flagging the rest, then returning with the remaining time. A timed practice test simulation reproduces this pressure far better than casual browsing through question banks ever will.
Space the two simulations several days apart and spend a full study session reviewing the first before sitting the second — an unreviewed mock is a wasted mock.
Microsoft scores its exams on a 1–1,000 scale with 700 required to pass — and that 700 is a scaled score, not 70% of questions answered correctly. So don't treat a practice percentage as a literal prediction of your exam score; the two aren't on the same scale. Use your practice numbers comparatively instead:
Decide your booking rule in advance — for example: consistently strong performance on fresh questions, timed, across all domains, on two consecutive mocks. Fresh matters; retaking the same set and improving mostly proves you remember it.
By exam week, your practice record should show three things: domain scores that rose and then stabilised, an error log whose recent entries are mostly "reading" rather than "knowledge" failures, and two timed simulations completed under honest conditions. If it does, book with confidence — and remember the retake safety net: Microsoft allows a first retake after 24 hours, with longer waits for later attempts, so one bad day is a delay, not a verdict. If instead the log still shows knowledge gaps clustering in one domain, that's not a practice problem — go back to the relevant block of your study plan, patch it, and return to Phase 2 for that domain only. Either way, the mocks have done their job: you're no longer guessing about readiness.
