Ask ten people who hold Azure Solutions Architect Expert how hard AZ-305 was and you will hear the same word: different. Not harder in the memorise-more-facts sense — different, because AZ-305 (Designing Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions) tests judgement rather than procedure, and judgement is the one thing you cannot cram.
Short answer: AZ-305 is a demanding expert-level exam, but its difficulty is of a specific kind. Almost every question asks you to choose between workable designs under constraints — cost, availability, governance, recovery objectives — rather than to recall how a feature is configured. Candidates with genuine design experience often find it fairer than AZ-104; candidates who arrive straight from an implementation background often find it slippery, because several answer options are technically correct and only one best fits the stated requirements.

Microsoft organises AZ-305 around four design domains: identity, governance and monitoring solutions; data storage solutions; business continuity solutions; and infrastructure solutions. Read those verbs carefully — every domain begins with design. That framing is the whole difficulty story.
An implementation exam asks: "Which setting enables X?" One option is right, three are wrong, and knowledge settles it. A design exam asks: "Given this company's requirements, which storage solution should they use?" Now three options might genuinely work, and the question is won by weighing the requirements — the compliance constraint hiding in paragraph two, the cost sensitivity mentioned in passing, the recovery-time objective that quietly eliminates the cheapest answer. The skill being examined is requirement-to-service mapping, and it is why experienced engineers describe AZ-305 answers as "arguable" in a way AZ-104 answers rarely are.
Three habits of the question style are worth knowing before you commit:
The exam's difficulty also depends on what you walk in with, and here Microsoft is unusually explicit: you must already hold the Azure Administrator Associate certification (AZ-104) to earn Azure Solutions Architect Expert. Passing AZ-305 alone awards nothing — it is one of only two Microsoft certifications with a mandatory certification prerequisite (the other is the DevOps Engineer Expert credential, AZ-400).
That prerequisite reshapes the difficulty question in two ways.
First, it filters the field. Everyone sitting AZ-305 with the credential in reach has already passed a hands-on associate exam, so "is AZ-305 hard?" really means "is it hard for people who already cleared AZ-104?" — and the answer is still yes, because the skills barely overlap. AZ-104 proved you can operate Azure; AZ-305 asks whether you can decide what to build. Plenty of excellent operators fail their first design exam precisely because operating and designing are different muscles. Second, it means AZ-305 does not re-test administration basics. Portal navigation, routine configuration, day-two operations — the exam treats these as settled and spends its time above them, on architecture. Studying AZ-305 as "AZ-104 but bigger" is the most common miscalibration we see.

Neither exam is objectively "the harder one" — they sit on different axes. Engineers who love precision often rate AZ-104 harder; architects who think in trade-offs often clear AZ-305 more comfortably than they cleared its prerequisite. Business continuity design is the most commonly cited struggle. Questions hinge on translating recovery-time and recovery-point requirements into the right combination of backup, replication and failover choices — and on noticing when a stated budget or simplicity requirement rules out the gold-plated option. This is exactly the kind of reasoning that day-to-day operations rarely exercises.
Data storage design is a close second, because Azure offers many overlapping ways to store anything. The exam expects you to discriminate between relational, non-relational and analytical options — and between tiers and redundancy models within them — based on access patterns, consistency needs and cost constraints given in the scenario.
Identity and governance design is hard for a subtler reason: candidates know the components well from AZ-104 but stumble when asked to design across an organisation — multi-team scopes, governance at scale, monitoring strategy — where the unit of thought is the enterprise rather than the subscription.
Infrastructure design is the broadest domain, spanning compute, networking and application architecture choices. Its difficulty is coverage: the surface area of "which compute/network shape fits this workload" is enormous, and most candidates have deep experience with only a slice of it.
One discipline worth adopting from day one: check the official skills outline on Microsoft's AZ-305 page rather than trusting any third-party topic list (including this one) as your syllabus — Microsoft updated the exam's English version in April 2026, and design exams shift emphasis as Azure's service catalogue evolves.
Mostly no — and the gaps are worth naming so you are not misled elsewhere. Microsoft does not publish pass rates for its exams, so any "AZ-305 pass rate" percentage you find online is unofficial guesswork. It does not publish question counts either. Even the exam duration is best confirmed directly on the official exam page when you book rather than taken from blogs.
What is official: AZ-305 is proctored (delivered through Pearson VUE, online or at a test centre), scored on Microsoft's 1–1,000 scale with 700 required to pass — a scaled score, not 70% of questions — and priced by country or region at Microsoft's expert tier, so check the current fee for your location on the official page. If you fall short, a first retake is available after 24 hours, and your score report's section breakdown shows which design domain needs work. Once you pass, the certification renews annually through a free, open-book online assessment — the difficulty you are weighing here is a one-time gate, not a recurring one.
