FAQ
- Q1: How much does the NCLEX-RN exam cost?
- A: As of October 2026 the registration fee is USD 200 in the United States and CAD 360 in Canada (plus local taxes). Candidates testing at an international center pay an additional USD 150 (or CAD 150) scheduling fee, and changing your nursing regulatory body, exam type or exam language costs USD 50 or CAD 50. NCSBN has announced the fee will rise to USD 350 in the US and Australia and CAD 570 in Canada from February 1, 2027, and registration fees are non-refundable.
- Q2: How many questions are on the NCLEX-RN and how long do you get?
- A: The real exam is computerized adaptive, so every RN candidate answers a minimum of 85 items and a maximum of 150 items within a five-hour limit that includes breaks. Fifteen of those items are unscored pretest items, and the exam stops once the algorithm can make a pass or fail decision or the maximum is reached.
- Q3: What question formats are on the NCLEX-RN?
- A: Under the Next Generation NCLEX test plan effective April 2026, the exam mixes stand-alone items in multiple formats with case studies; a case study is a set of six items built on one client scenario that tests the six steps of clinical judgment (recognize cues, analyze cues, prioritize hypotheses, generate solutions, take action, evaluate outcomes). A minimum-length exam includes three case studies (18 items) and 52 content-area items, and items may include charts, tables and graphics.
- Q4: What is the passing standard for the NCLEX-RN?
- A: The NCLEX-RN passing standard is 0.00 logits, which the NCSBN Board of Directors voted to keep in place through March 31, 2029. The standard is re-evaluated every three years when the test plan is reviewed, and the exam reports pass or fail rather than a numeric score.
- Q5: What content does the NCLEX-RN cover and how is it weighted?
- A: The April 2026 test plan allocates Management of Care 15–21%, Safety and Infection Prevention and Control 10–16%, Health Promotion and Maintenance 6–12%, Psychosocial Integrity 6–12%, Basic Care and Comfort 6–12%, Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies 13–19%, Reduction of Risk Potential 9–15% and Physiological Adaptation 11–17%. Clinical judgment is measured separately through case studies and roughly 10% stand-alone items.
- Q6: How soon can you retake the NCLEX-RN if you fail?
- A: NCSBN's policy allows a retake 45 days after your previous exam date, with up to eight attempts per year. Some nursing regulatory bodies impose longer waits or fewer attempts, so check your board's rules.
- Q7: Where and in what languages is the NCLEX-RN given?
- A: The exam is delivered year-round at Pearson VUE professional test centers in the US, Canada and international locations. It is offered in English, and NCSBN also offers the NCLEX-RN in French for French-speaking Canadian candidates.
- Q8: What do you need before you can schedule the NCLEX-RN?
- A: You must apply for licensure or registration with a nursing regulatory body (NRB), register and pay with Pearson VUE, and receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) from the NRB. An ATT is valid for a period set by the NRB, on average 90 days, and official results come from the NRB within about six weeks of the exam.
