Free CISSP: Certified Information Systems Security Professional Exam Questions and Answers

CISSP is the credential most often named in senior security job adverts, and the one whose difficulty is usually misunderstood: it is adaptive, so the exam adjusts to your answers and ends anywhere between 100 and 150 items within a three-hour window. The pass mark is 700 out of 1000 on a scaled score, and registration is $749 in the Americas. ISC2 requires five years of paid work across at least two of the eight domains — one year waivable with a relevant degree or approved credential — and you can sit the exam first, becoming an Associate of ISC2 with six years to earn the experience. Security and Risk Management is the largest domain at 16%. Candidates consistently report the hard part is not technical depth but answering as a manager rather than an engineer.

Q1: How much does the CISSP exam cost?
A: As of October 2026, ISC2 lists the CISSP exam at US$749 in the Americas, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa, EUR 719.04 in Europe and GBP 606.69 in the United Kingdom, with pricing and taxes based on where you sit the exam. A standard exam purchase gives you 365 days to schedule one attempt, and ISC2 charges US$50 to reschedule and US$100 to cancel.
Q2: How many questions are on the CISSP exam and how long is it?
A: The real exam uses computerized adaptive testing (CAT), so you see between 100 and 150 questions and have a maximum of 3 hours. The CAT format has applied to the English, Chinese, German, Japanese and Spanish versions since the April 15, 2024 refresh.
Q3: What is the passing score for the CISSP exam?
A: You need 700 out of 1,000 points to pass. ISC2 does not give candidates a numeric score: the Pearson VUE proctor hands you an unofficial pass or fail result when you check out of the test centre, and the official result follows by email.
Q4: What experience do I need to get CISSP certified?
A: ISC2 requires a minimum of five years of cumulative, full-time experience in two or more of the eight CISSP domains, and a relevant four-year degree or an approved credential can replace one year of that (only one year can be waived). If you pass the exam without the full experience you become an Associate of ISC2 and have six years to earn the remaining experience.
Q5: What are the CISSP domains and their weightings?
A: The current outline, in effect since April 15, 2024, weights the exam as Security and Risk Management 16%, Asset Security 10%, Security Architecture and Engineering 13%, Communication and Network Security 13%, Identity and Access Management 13%, Security Assessment and Testing 12%, Security Operations 13% and Software Development Security 10%. As of October 2026 ISC2 has not published a newer CISSP exam outline or announced a retirement date for this one.
Q6: Can I take the CISSP exam online?
A: No. After two online proctoring pilots ISC2 concluded that online proctored exams represent an unnecessary risk to the integrity of its certifications, so the exam is delivered only at Pearson VUE test centres. It is offered in English, Chinese, German, Japanese and Spanish, and ISC2 says it may run further online pilots as the technology evolves.
Q7: How long is CISSP valid and what does it cost to maintain?
A: CISSP runs on a 3-year certification cycle during which you must earn 120 continuing professional education (CPE) credits; ISC2 suggests 40 a year but only the 3-year total is enforced. You also pay an annual maintenance fee of US$135, and a single fee covers every ISC2 certification you hold.
Q8: What is the CISSP retake policy if I fail?
A: After a first failed attempt you can retest after 30 test-free days, after a second attempt you wait 60 days, and after a third or later attempt you wait 90 days from your most recent exam. ISC2 allows a maximum of four attempts at any one exam within a 12-month period.
