How to Use Practice Tests Effectively

Practice tests teach best when used as retrieval practice, not self-grading. A complete method: when to test, how to time it, and how to simulate exam conditions.

Most candidates use practice tests as a thermometer: take one, read the percentage, feel good or bad, move on. Used that way, a practice test measures your knowledge without changing it much. Used correctly, the test itself is the study method — one of the most powerful ones known to learning research. Why practice testing works better than rereading

A practice question forces you to retrieve an answer from memory, and the act of retrieval strengthens the memory far more than looking at the material again. This is the "testing effect", demonstrated in Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 research in Psychological Science, which found that practising recall beat restudying for long-term retention. A major 2013 review of learning techniques by Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing among the highest-utility study techniques available — while the methods most candidates default to, highlighting and rereading, rated low.

Two practical consequences follow from this:

  1. A practice question you get wrong still teaches you, because the retrieval attempt primes you to remember the correct answer when you see it. Wrong answers are not wasted time — provided you review them.

The goal here is not a score — it is exposure to how the exam frames each objective, and immediate feedback on what you actually absorbed. Answer, check, read the explanation, and understand why every wrong option is wrong before moving on. Mode 2: Timed mixed sets (skill mode)

Once a domain is broadly covered, switch to mixed question sets under time pressure. Mode 3: Full-length simulation (rehearsal mode)

In the final phase, take complete practice exams that mirror the real event: full question count, full duration, one sitting, no notes, no pausing. A phase-by-phase practice test strategy

Here is the method assembled into a sequence you can map onto any certification timeline, whether it spans four weeks or four months.

Phase 1: Baseline (before or at the start of study)

Phase 2: Learn and drill (the main study block)

Alternate study and retrieval in tight loops: study an objective, then immediately drill questions on it in untimed mode. Simulating real conditions: what actually matters

The value of a simulation is proportional to its honesty. The habits below are the ones that make a practice score predictive rather than flattering.

  • Match the real format. Know your exam's question count and duration and replicate them. CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701), for example, runs to a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes; AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) is 65 questions in 90 minutes. Check your provider's exam page for the current figures before you configure a mock.
  • No lifelines. No notes, no pausing the timer, no looking anything up, no "that one doesn't count, I misread it". Every softening inflates the score and blinds you.
  • Answer everything — where the rules reward it. AWS's official exam guides state that unanswered questions are scored as incorrect and there is no penalty for guessing, so on AWS exams a blank is strictly worse than a guess. Other programmes set their own rules — check your provider's guide, then rehearse the correct guessing behaviour during practice so it is automatic on the day.
  • Practise flag-and-return. Decide in advance how long you will sit on a hard question before flagging it, and enforce that rule in every timed session.

Reading your scores without fooling yourself

A practice score is an estimate, not a verdict, and two verified scoring mechanics explain why your practice numbers and real result can diverge.

First, many major exams use scaled scoring rather than raw percentages — AWS scores from 100 to 1,000 (Cloud Practitioner passes at 700), CompTIA from 100 to 900 (Security+ passes at 750). AWS's exam guide explains that scaling exists to equate exam forms of slightly different difficulty, so a passing score is not a percentage of questions correct. Second, some exams include unscored pilot questions — AWS includes 15 unscored items among Cloud Practitioner's 65, and they are not identified — which is one documented reason your "felt" performance and your score can differ.

The mistakes that quietly ruin practice testing

Even candidates who test frequently fall into patterns that erode the method's value:

  • Scoring without reviewing. The review after a test is where most of the learning happens. It deserves a structured workflow of its own — laid out in how to review your mistakes after a practice test — but the minimum standard is: never take the next test before you have processed the last one.

A worked example: eight weeks to a certification exam

To make the method concrete, here is how it might look for a support technician preparing for an entry-level IT certification over eight weeks, studying evenings and weekends:

  • Week 1: Read the official exam objectives; take a short diagnostic set untimed; note the two weakest domains.
  • Weeks 2–5: Study one domain block at a time; drill untimed topic questions after each study session; run one mixed 25-question set each weekend, timed loosely.
  • Week 6: Switch to timed mixed sets on alternate days; log accuracy and pace; give the weakest domain a double share of questions.
  • Week 7: Two full-length simulations under strict conditions, three days apart, each followed by a full review day and targeted restudy.
  • Week 8: One final simulation early in the week, then light review of the error log — no new material, no test the night before.

Adjust the proportions to your timeline, but keep the shape: retrieval from week one, timing from the middle, honest simulation at the end, review after everything.
