How to Turn Exam Objectives Into Practice Questions

A step-by-step technique for converting exam blueprint statements into self-test questions, with verb-by-verb templates and worked examples.

Every certification exam ships with its own question-writing kit, hiding in plain sight: the official objectives document. Each line of that blueprint is a question the exam is allowed to ask, phrased as a statement — which means that with a small set of rewriting moves, you can convert the blueprint into a personal bank of self-test questions before you have bought a single study resource.

The payoff is not just free questions. Writing them is itself study. Turning "compare X and Y" into an actual comparison question forces you to retrieve, organise and apply the material — and retrieval is the point: Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 research on the testing effect showed that practising recall beats restudying for long-term retention, and Dunlosky and colleagues' 2013 review rated practice testing among the highest-utility techniques known. Self-written questions put that engine in your own hands, on exactly the content your exam covers.

The core move: verbs become question stems

Objective statements almost always open with an action verb — identify, compare, configure, explain, given a scenario, troubleshoot. That verb is an instruction to the exam's own question writers, and you can obey it the same way they do. The verb tells you both the question format and the cognitive level the exam expects.

A working translation table:

  1. "Identify / define / recognise" → straight recall. What is ___? Which of the following describes ___? Also invert it: describe the thing and ask for its name.
  2. "Compare / contrast / differentiate" → discrimination questions. What distinguishes X from Y? In which situation would X be the wrong choice and Y the right one? One objective of this shape yields a whole cluster of pairwise questions.
  3. "Explain / summarise the purpose of" → why-questions. Why does ___ exist? What problem does it solve? What breaks without it?
  4. "Configure / install / perform / implement" → procedure questions. What are the steps to ___, in order? What must be true before step 3 works? If you have a lab, the best version is a doing-question: actually perform it, then write the question about the step you fumbled.
  5. "Given a scenario, troubleshoot / select / determine" → the exam's signature format, and the one most worth imitating. Write a two-sentence situation with a constraint, then ask what to do: A user reports ___ after ___; what is the most likely cause? The constraint is what makes it a real question rather than trivia.
  6. Bare noun lists (many objectives are just "X, Y, Z, W") → turn each noun into a mini-set: what is it, when do you use it, what is it commonly confused with?

Two rules keep the output honest. Write the answer down at the same time as the question, with a one-line justification — a question you cannot answer yet goes into the bank anyway, flagged as a gap. And phrase questions so they cannot be answered by recognition alone; "list the three ___" beats "is ___ one of the three?" because free recall works the memory harder than a yes/no nudge.

A worked example

Take a typical objective statement of the scenario kind: "Given a scenario, select the appropriate storage option based on cost and access requirements." Six questions fall out of it in about ten minutes:

  1. What storage options is this objective referring to, and what is each one's defining characteristic? (recall — the noun-list move)
  2. Which factors does this objective say drive the selection? (reading the objective itself as content)
  3. What distinguishes option A from option B when access is infrequent? (discrimination)
  4. Why would the cheapest option be wrong for data needed within minutes? (why-question)
  5. A team needs to retain logs for seven years and expects to read them almost never; cost must be minimal. Which option, and why? (scenario with constraints)
  6. Same scenario, but the logs must now be queryable weekly — what changes? (the twist question: vary one constraint and re-ask)

Question 6 illustrates the highest-value habit in this whole technique: once a scenario question exists, mutate one variable and ask again. Each mutation tests whether you understand the mechanism or merely memorised the original pairing.

Building the habit into your prep

Convert as you study, not in one heroic blueprint-marathon. A workable rhythm: at the end of each study session, write three to five questions from the objectives you just covered, answers included. By the end of your content pass you own a question bank that mirrors the blueprint's coverage exactly — including, via your flagged unanswerable questions, a live map of what still needs work.

Then use the bank the way any question bank should be used: spaced, shuffled and closed-book. Deal yourself a mixed hand from old topics every few days rather than re-asking this week's questions while they are still warm. Keep your scenario questions separate from your recall cards, though; they exercise different muscles and deserve different sessions.

What self-written questions cannot do

Honesty about the technique's limits makes it more useful, not less.

  • They inherit your blind spots. You cannot write a question about a distinction you have not noticed. Your bank tests what you think the objective means, which is occasionally not what the exam thinks it means.
  • They are not calibrated. Professionally written items are tested for difficulty and plausible wrong answers; yours are not, so your hit-rate on your own questions is not a readiness benchmark.
  • They cannot simulate the exam. The strongest prep uses both layers deliberately: self-written questions as the daily retrieval engine that keeps you honest objective by objective, and professional full-length tests as the periodic external check that your internal map matches the real exam. When your self-testing feels solid but an external test disagrees, believe the external test — and mine its wrong answers for the distinctions your own questions missed.

Start with one objective tonight

Open your exam's official objectives document, pick a single line from the domain you studied most recently, and run it through the verb table above until you have five questions with written answers. Ten minutes, no new resources, and you will feel the difference immediately: the objective stops being a line to read past and becomes a claim you can check yourself against. Repeat tomorrow.
