Neither gravity is better in the abstract. But your answer to "which ecosystem is my career already inside?" usually answers the tool question too.
It would be convenient to quote a single statistic proving one tool dominates hiring. No such verified figure exists, and you should distrust articles that conjure one. What a working professional can do instead is run a structured, local test:

A career investment is partly judged by its salvage value: what survives if you switch tools later?

What transfers partially: calculated-field thinking. Optimise for cheap momentum and market breadth. In most markets that points to Power BI: access is easy in any Microsoft-licensed workplace, and the PL-300 Power BI Data Analyst credential has no prerequisites and renews free. Stay and deepen, unless the market test above says otherwise. Seniority in one ecosystem — Power BI into Fabric and DP-600, or Tableau into consultant-level Salesforce credentials — pays better than shallow competence in two. Add the second tool only when a specific role, client or promotion demands it, and expect the crossover to take months rather than years given how much of your skill transfers.
Learn both, certify your stronger one first. Consultants meet client estates as they find them, and "I work in whichever BI tool you run" is a genuine commercial advantage. The dual-certification route is realistic precisely because modelling and design skills transfer; only the product mechanics double.
The Microsoft track has the clearer corridor right now: Fabric unifies analytics and engineering, and DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer Associate) sits adjacent to the Power BI world in a way Tableau's ecosystem does not mirror. Tableau remains a consumer of engineered data rather than a platform for engineering it.
Abstract frameworks land better as worked examples. Consider three composite cases:
The corporate finance analyst. Four years in Excel-heavy reporting at a Microsoft-licensed manufacturer, promotion to a BI role in sight. Power BI is the obvious call: the organisation already owns it, her Excel and Power Query instincts carry straight across, and the PL-300 credential slots into an internal case for the promotion. Tableau would mean fighting her own company's stack for no market gain.
The consultancy analyst in a Salesforce practice. His firm implements Salesforce for mid-market clients, and dashboard work rides on top of CRM data. Power BI can wait until a client estate demands it.
The career-changer with no employer yet. She has SQL from a bootcamp, no BI tool history, and a job hunt ahead. Her decision should be entirely market-led: run the fifty-posting test, and in the absence of a strong local signal, default to the cheaper, better-documented Microsoft route and put the saved money towards portfolio time. None of these three chose the "best tool". Each chose the tool with the shortest distance between certification and a concrete career outcome — which is the only version of this decision that pays.
Be sceptical of any article quoting "the average Tableau salary" against "the average Power BI salary": no provider publishes verified, dated salary figures for holders of either credential, and tool-level pay comparisons circulating online are generally unattributed. Analyst compensation moves with country, sector, seniority and negotiation far more than with visualisation software.
