"Should I just skip the 10% domain?" It is probably the most common triage question candidates ask in the final weeks before a certification exam — and both instinctive answers are wrong. Skipping it entirely gifts away marks you may badly need; studying it as thoroughly as your core domains burns hours that would score more elsewhere. The efficient answer sits in between: minor domains deserve a deliberately capped, recall-oriented treatment that harvests their easy marks at the lowest possible cost.
Short answer: do not skip low-weight domains — cover each one once at survey depth, convert the fact-dense material into a small spaced-repetition deck, and cap the domain at roughly its weighting's share of your remaining study time. A 10% domain in a 40-hour plan gets about four hours, most of it retrieval practice rather than reading.
A 10% domain sounds ignorable until you translate it into margin. Certification exams are typically reported on scaled scores with passing thresholds well above the halfway mark — 700 on AWS Cloud Practitioner's 100–1,000 scale, 750 on Security+'s 100–900 scale — and a scaled score is not a simple percentage of questions correct, so you cannot assume a comfortable buffer. Concede a whole domain and every one of its questions becomes a guaranteed miss you must offset with near-flawless work everywhere else, on an exam where some questions will be unfamiliar no matter how well you prepared.
Two provider-documented mechanics sharpen the point. Where scoring is compensatory — AWS states in its exam guides that you pass on the overall score, not per domain — a mark from a minor domain is worth exactly as much as a mark from a major one, and minor-domain questions are often more direct, making them cheaper marks to win. And on AWS exams there is no penalty for guessing while unanswered questions count as wrong, so even a lightly-studied domain where you can eliminate one or two options beats an abandoned one. Skipping is not efficiency; it is paying full price for zero coverage.

Efficiency with minor domains is mostly a discipline problem, because small topics have a way of expanding — they are often newer to you, and novelty feels productive. The fix is to budget before you begin:

Minor domains reward a different toolkit from major ones. Heavy domains earn depth — scenarios, labs, layered understanding. Light domains are usually best treated as recall targets.
Read the domain's objectives in the official exam guide and cover them once from a single source. Resist buying or watching dedicated deep-dive material for a domain worth a tenth of the exam. The objective wording tells you the expected depth: "identify" and "define" verbs dominate many minor domains, and recall-level objectives are flashcard material, not project material. Because minor-domain marks are disproportionately definitional, a compact deck of well-made cards captures most of the domain's value. Keep it small — dozens of cards, not hundreds — and review it on expanding intervals; the spacing effect (Cepeda et al., 2006) is precisely the mechanism that lets a four-hour domain stay retrievable for weeks without re-study. Minor domains rarely stand alone: their concepts surface inside the big domains' scenarios. When a light-domain term appears while you are studying a heavy domain, pause for the sixty-second version — connect it, then move on. This cross-linking is close to free and is often how minor-domain knowledge actually gets tested.
You need evidence the survey pass worked, and a short set of practice questions per minor domain provides it. Working through a few free sample questions for your exam and checking your minor-domain accuracy in a full-length timed simulation is enough — the goal is confirmation, not mastery, and analysing which objectives your misses map to matters more than the raw count.
A network engineer preparing for a five-domain exam has three weeks and about 24 study hours left. Her practice results are decent everywhere except the exam's smallest domain — 8%, governance-flavoured material she has never touched at work. The inefficient path is obvious and tempting: a weekend immersed in the unfamiliar topic because it feels like the biggest gap. The efficient path: she caps the domain at two hours. Forty minutes reading its objectives against one study guide; forty minutes writing roughly thirty flashcards from that pass; a ten-minute review of the deck every second day thereafter; and one check of her accuracy on that domain in her next timed practice run. Total cost: about two and a half hours across three weeks. If exam day brings half a dozen questions from that domain, she is positioned to take most of them — for less time than a single deep-dive evening would have cost.
Before you declare a low-weight domain "done", it should pass this bar — and nothing higher:
The mark of a well-run preparation is not heroic coverage of everything; it is that every hour went where it bought the most. Minor domains are where that principle is easiest to violate in both directions — abandoned in bravado or gold-plated in anxiety. Budget them by weight, study them by recall, verify them briefly, and then give the reclaimed hours to the domains that decide your result.
