Two candidates sit the same technical exam knowing the same amount. One finishes with twenty minutes to review; the other leaves eight questions blank at the buzzer. The difference is almost never knowledge — it is that the first candidate made a dozen small triage decisions correctly and the second made none at all, spending seven minutes proving they could eventually crack question 14. Under time pressure, a technical exam stops being purely a test of what you know and becomes a test of how you allocate a scarce resource. That allocation is a skill, it has rules, and you can apply them from the very first question of your next exam.
This article is about decisions made inside the exam, on calculation- and analysis-heavy items — subnetting, capacity maths, log analysis, architecture trade-offs. Training your speed-versus-accuracy balance in the weeks beforehand is a different job, and general pacing arithmetic across a whole paper is covered in how to manage time during a certification exam; here we assume you know your per-question budget and focus on what to do when a hard technical item threatens to blow it.
Before the exam, compute one number: minutes divided by questions. AWS's Certified Solutions Architect – Associate, for instance, gives 130 minutes for 65 questions — two minutes per item — while the Cloud Practitioner exam gives 90 minutes for 65, closer to eighty seconds each. Whatever your exam's figure, that average is your law, with one refinement: easy recall items should come in well under it, precisely so that technical items can run over. A workable rule is that no single question may cost more than double the average on first contact. At double-budget, you act — you do not "just need thirty more seconds", because that thirty seconds has a habit of becoming three minutes.
Checkpoints make the law enforceable. Note the on-screen clock at each quarter of the exam (question 16, 33, 49 of 65) and compare against where you should be. Catching a five-minute deficit at the quarter mark is a small correction; discovering it with ten questions left is a crisis.
Every technical question gets a fast classification before you invest in it:
Two things make triage psychologically hard. First, ego: parking a question feels like admitting defeat, especially on material you "should" know. Reframe it — parking is a scheduling decision, not a verdict; the question is still yours to win later. Second, sunk cost: after ninety seconds of working, abandoning feels like waste. It isn't. The ninety seconds are gone either way; the only live question is where the next ninety go, and they almost always earn more on a fresh item. On many exams a blank is the worst possible state. AWS states it plainly in its official exam guides: unanswered questions are scored as incorrect, and there is no penalty for guessing — so a provisional answer strictly dominates a blank. Other programmes publish their own scoring rules, so confirm yours in the provider's exam guide, but the operational habit is the same everywhere flag-and-return exists: never leave a question blank when you park it. Pick the most plausible option in five seconds, flag, move on. If time dies before you return, your guess is in the game; if you do return, you review rather than start cold. Triage protects your time; these habits compress the time each attempted item takes.
Estimate before you calculate. On numeric items, a ten-second order-of-magnitude estimate often eliminates two or three options outright — sometimes all but one, making the full calculation unnecessary. If the surviving options are close together, calculate; you have narrowed the field and gained a sanity check on your result.
Work from the options, not towards them. When answer choices are concrete values or configurations, testing candidates against the constraints in the stem is frequently faster than deriving the answer from scratch. This is especially true for "which configuration meets the requirement" items: three options usually violate a stated requirement visibly.
Write the intermediate steps down. Exams delivered on screen typically provide a digital whiteboard or equivalent working space — CompTIA's online exams, for example, include a built-in digital whiteboard in place of scratch paper. Using it feels slower and is faster: held-in-the-head arithmetic under stress produces errors, and errors mean re-doing the whole item.
One method, once. Under pressure, doubt whispers to re-verify with a second approach. On a green item, trust your first careful pass and bank it. Verification passes belong in your end-of-exam review time, if any survives.
Long stems get the targeted read. Analysis-heavy items often bury two determinative facts in a paragraph of scenery; read the actual question first and scan for what it needs. The full reading routine is in how to handle long scenario questions.

One more consolation for the pace-anxious: your felt performance and your score are loosely coupled. Several providers include unscored pilot questions — AWS's guides state that 15 of its 65 items are unscored and unidentified — and scaled scoring means the pass mark is not a simple percentage correct. Triage discipline collapses under exam adrenaline unless it has been rehearsed. The rehearsal is simple: timed, full-length simulation with the same budget maths you will use on the day, followed by a review of your time log as seriously as your error log — which items ran past double-budget, and whether the overrun bought a correct answer.
