Continue readingHow SAP's certification system works in 2026 — levels, tracks, exam delivery, one-year validity and the shift to performance-based exams.

In April 2024, SAP quietly did something almost no major certification provider has done: it tore up its own model. Credentials that used to last for years now expire after twelve months. Anything issued before that date stopped counting on 31 March 2025. Exams left Pearson VUE test centres entirely and moved online. And from November 2025, SAP began replacing traditional multiple-choice exams with open-book, hands-on practical assessments — with AI tools explicitly permitted in the room.
That means most of what you will read about SAP certification on forums, older blog posts and even some training-provider sites is describing a system that no longer exists. This guide explains the system as it actually works in 2026: how the certifications are organised into levels and tracks, how you buy and sit an exam, what the exams look like now, and how the annual renewal cycle keeps a credential alive. Deep dives into individual modules — finance, procurement, sales, HR — live in their own dedicated guides, which we link to along the way.
An SAP certification is a credential issued by SAP SE, the German enterprise software company behind SAP S/4HANA and the wider SAP product portfolio. Each certification is earned by passing one proctored exam (or, increasingly, one practical assessment) delivered through SAP's own online platform. The credential attests that you can work with a specific SAP product in a specific role — configuring financial accounting in S/4HANA, say, or administering the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP).
Three things distinguish SAP's programme from vendor certifications you may know from the cloud or networking world:
SAP structures its credentials in levels, and the exam code tells you the level before you read anything else.
Every SAP exam code follows the same pattern: a level prefix, an exam identifier, and a version suffix. Take C_TS4FI_2601, the current financial accounting exam as of August 2026:
The prefix P_ denotes Professional-level exams, such as P_BTPA (Solution Architect – SAP BTP), and the E_ lineage covers specialist and expert credentials.
Associate certifications validate foundational, role-ready knowledge of one solution area. They carry no enforced prerequisites — you do not need SAP work experience, a partner employer or a prior credential to register. Cut scores (SAP's term for the passing percentage) vary far more than most candidates expect: among current exams verified on SAP's certification pages, they range from 59% for SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Core (C_THR81) and Management Accounting (C_TS4CO) up to 82% for S/4HANA Sales (C_TS462) and 83% for SAP Build Developer (C_LCNC). There is no universal "65% to pass" rule, whatever older articles claim.
Professional certifications, carrying the P_ prefix, target people who already work in the role. P_BTPA_2511, for example, certifies solution architects on SAP BTP and was in the first wave of SAP's new practical exam format. SAP does not enforce prerequisites at this level either, but the exams assume associate-level knowledge plus real project experience, and preparing for one without that background is a hard road.
Consider an accountant with five years of ledger experience but no SAP exposure. Her sensible sequence is: learn S/4HANA basics, sit the Associate financial accounting exam (C_TS4FI), work on at least one implementation, and only then consider the Professional financials credential. Jumping straight to a P_ exam because it "looks more senior" is the single most common sequencing mistake we see. For a full associate-to-architect roadmap, see the dedicated SAP certification career path guide — that is its territory, not this one's.
Levels tell you depth; tracks tell you direction. SAP certifications cluster into three broad families.
These follow SAP's classic module map, though the names have changed in the S/4HANA era:
Note the naming shift: the old "SAP Certified Application Associate" title has been simplified to "SAP Certified Associate". If a job advert or CV still uses the long form, it is describing the same family of credentials.
For people who build and run SAP systems rather than configure business processes:
This is the fork that trips up the most newcomers. SAP S/4HANA Cloud comes in two editions with separate certification tracks:
They are not interchangeable. A consultancy staffing a GROW implementation wants Public Edition credentials; a RISE programme wants Private Edition. Check which edition a target employer actually runs before you pick an exam. The distinctions within the S/4HANA family — including which exam suits which role — are unpacked in our SAP S/4HANA certification guide.
One certification sits outside the module tracks: C_IEE2E, End-to-End Business Processes for the Intelligent Enterprise. It replaced the retired C_TS410 as SAP's broad, cross-process entry credential and is a common first step for people who have not yet chosen a module. Our guide to the best SAP certifications for beginners ranks it against the other starting points, so we will leave the "which first?" question there.
This is where SAP differs most sharply from other certification programmes, and where outdated information does the most damage.
SAP does not sell exam vouchers at a single global price. As of 2026, there are two official routes:
Pricing for both routes varies by country and region, and SAP no longer publishes a flat global USD figure on its certification pages. Any article quoting a universal dollar price for an SAP exam is working from stale or secondary data — check the SAP Store for your country before budgeting.
All SAP exams are delivered digitally through SAP's Certification Hub environment, which handles booking, scheduling and delivery. Traditional theoretical exams are taken online with remote proctoring; there is no test-centre option any more — SAP exams are no longer a Pearson VUE product. You gain access to Certification Hub through either a Learning Hub subscription or a purchased attempt bundle.
The two similarly named platforms confuse nearly every first-time candidate, so it is worth separating them plainly. SAP Learning Hub is the study side: learning journeys, training content, practice systems and — for subscribers — the annual renewal assessments. Certification Hub is the exam side: the environment where attempts are booked, scheduled and delivered under remote proctoring. A Learning Hub professional subscription gives you both study content and four exam attempts a year; an attempt bundle gives you Certification Hub access without the study side. Neither is optional if you want the credential — every exam ultimately runs through Certification Hub — but which combination you buy depends on how much of SAP's own training you intend to use. That trade-off, along with self-study alternatives and how to structure a study timeline, is the subject of our separate guide on how to prepare for SAP certification.
SAP's established theoretical exams are proctored, closed-book, multiple-choice and multiple-response assessments, typically 180 minutes long. SAP's current certification pages no longer publish question counts, so treat any specific number you see elsewhere as unverified. Each exam has its own cut score, published on its official page — as noted above, these range from 59% to 83% among currently verified exams. For a candid look at question styles and which exams are genuinely difficult, see how hard are SAP certification exams, which owns that topic.
Starting in November 2025, SAP began replacing traditional multiple-choice exams with practical, performance-based assessments. This is the most consequential change to the programme since the validity overhaul, and it comes in two forms per SAP's official certification FAQ:
Two features would have been unthinkable in the old model. The practical exams are open-book: SAP Help Portal, SAP Learning, SAP Community and AI tools (SAP names Joule) are permitted while you work. And scoring can be pass/fail on task completion rather than a percentage — the BTP Administrator exam (C_ADBTP), for instance, is a 120-minute practical assessment best understood as pass/fail on defined tasks.
The first wave (November 2025) covered Solution Architect – SAP BTP, Generative AI Developer, SAP Build Developer, SAP Business Data Cloud, SAP BTP Administrator and RISE with SAP Methodology. Rollout continued from January 2026, with traditional exams running in parallel through 2026. The practical implication: check the delivery format of your specific exam at booking time, because during the transition you cannot assume either format from the certification name alone.
Every SAP certification is now valid for one year. To keep it, you complete a yearly Stay Certified assessment — a short, non-proctored check-in taken any time through SAP Learning Hub; without a subscription, the alternative is retaking the full exam. Certifications issued before April 2024 expired on 31 March 2025 unless renewed, so a pre-2024 credential sitting on a CV is, formally, lapsed. The mechanics — timing, what happens if you lapse, and how the assessments work — are covered in the dedicated SAP certification renewal guide.
The strategic point belongs here, though: because the credential must be maintained annually, choose a certification you will actually use at work. A cert renewed alongside your day job costs you an hour of attention a year; one outside your role becomes an annual chore you will eventually drop.
With levels, tracks, editions and formats mapped, here is a compact way to locate yourself. Answer four questions in order:
Questions this framework deliberately does not answer — what SAP-certified professionals earn, and whether the investment pays off for your situation — have their own homes in the SAP certification salary guide and is SAP certification worth it.
A final framing point before the misconceptions. Because associate exams have no experience prerequisites, employers read an SAP certification as evidence of structured product knowledge and commitment, not as proof of delivery capability — that is what project references are for. The credential works hardest in three situations: crossing into the SAP ecosystem from an adjacent role, moving between modules or editions, and satisfying clients or partners who ask for certified staff on an engagement. It works least as a substitute for hands-on system time, which is why the strongest candidate profile pairs a current certification with even modest practical exposure. Where salaries fit into this picture is deliberately out of scope here — the salary guide linked above handles earnings by module, role and region.
Because the system changed so much between 2024 and 2026, several widely repeated "facts" are now simply wrong. A quick audit:
If this overview did its job, you now know which shelf of the SAP library you need — and every shelf has its own detailed guide. Newcomers weighing a first credential should read the beginner rankings next; consultants targeting the core ERP suite should go straight to the S/4HANA guide; and when you reach the study stage, how to prepare for SAP certification covers resources and method so this article does not have to.
Whichever exam you land on, benchmark before you book. Browse the SAP exam directory on ExamPractice to find your exam, work through the free sample questions, and use a timed practice run to see whether your knowledge holds up under the 180-minute clock before an attempt is on the line.
Yes. Standalone exam-attempt bundles (one, two or six attempts) are sold through the SAP Store and training.sap.com, giving you Certification Hub access without a subscription. The trade-off is that Stay Certified renewal assessments come with Learning Hub, so subscription-free candidates face re-examination to renew.
A paid professional-edition Learning Hub subscription includes four certification exam attempts per year. Per-exam retake caps and waiting periods are not published consistently — confirm the current retake policy in SAP's certification support pages before relying on a specific number.
C_TS410 (Business Process Integration with SAP S/4HANA) was retired in the first half of 2025. Its successor is C_IEE2E, End-to-End Business Processes for the Intelligent Enterprise, based on S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition. Under SAP's retirement rules, certifications affected by a retirement keep twelve months of validity from the retirement date.
Only the new performance-based practical exams, where SAP Help Portal, SAP Learning, SAP Community and AI tools are explicitly permitted. Traditional theoretical exams remain closed-book and remotely proctored while the two formats run in parallel through 2026.
Exam facts in this guide were checked against official certification-provider pages on . Fees, exam codes and policies change — confirm on the provider’s own site before you book.
