The administrator track

Platform Administrator is the ecosystem's default first serious certification and its most recognisable credential — many job adverts still write "Salesforce Certified Administrator" or the legacy shorthand ADM-201. The current exam: 60 scored questions, 105 minutes, US$200, no prerequisites, and a passing score the current official guide lists as 68% for the English version (older guides said 65%, another marker of stale study material). The outline was recently refreshed to include an Agentforce domain at 8%, alongside configuration, object management, sales and service applications, data and analytics management, and automation — a clear signal that Salesforce now expects admins to manage AI agents as part of the org.

Above it sits Platform Administrator II (formerly Advanced Administrator), which requires the Platform Administrator certification and goes deeper on security, automation, auditing and environment management at a 65% passing score. The builder and developer track

This track has three rungs distinguished by how much code they involve.

Platform App Builder certifies declarative development — building applications with objects, Flow, Lightning pages and deployment tools, without Apex. No prerequisites, 63% passing score, and heavy weighting on business logic and process automation (28%). It suits admins broadening into app design and analysts who build but do not program; see the Platform App Builder guide for the exam itself.

Platform Developer (formerly Platform Developer I, still nicknamed PD1) is the programmatic credential: Apex, SOQL, Lightning Web Components, testing and deployment, with a 68% passing score and — contrary to persistent myth — no prerequisites. Platform Developer II then adds an advanced, performance-focused exam (120 minutes, 70% passing score) for which Platform Developer is the required prerequisite. Note what the two lanes share: App Builder and Platform Developer are both components of the Application Architect credential, so the declarative and programmatic paths reconverge at architecture level.

The business analyst credential

The Salesforce Certified Business Analyst certification stands slightly apart from the tracks — it certifies discovery, process mapping, requirements and user-acceptance skills rather than building or configuring. Sixty questions, 105 minutes, a comparatively high 72% passing score, and, importantly, no prerequisites since May 2023, when the previous Administrator-certification requirement was removed. Salesforce recommends roughly two years each of BA and platform experience, positioning this as a credential for converting existing analytical careers into the ecosystem rather than a beginner's first exam.

The consultant track

Consultant certifications certify implementation expertise in a specific product cloud, and nearly all of them share one structural feature: the Platform Administrator certification is a prerequisite, which makes the admin credential the gateway to this entire track.

• Agentforce Sales Consultant (formerly Sales Cloud Consultant): sales processes, forecasting, sales lifecycle implementation.

Consultant exams follow the standard US$200/105-minute pattern, but their passing scores are less consistently documented on official pages than the core exams — third-party guides report figures in the mid-to-high 60s per cent for most — so verify against the official exam guide when you book. These credentials matter most at Salesforce implementation partners, where holding the relevant cloud certification is often a staffing requirement for client projects.

The architect pyramid

The architect track is structured unlike everything below it. The two mid-tier credentials involve no new exam at all:

• Application Architect is awarded automatically once you hold four component certifications: Platform App Builder, Platform Developer, Platform Data Architect, and Platform Sharing and Visibility Architect.
• System Architect is likewise awarded on completing its four prerequisites, including Platform Integration Architect, Identity and Access Management Architect, and Platform Development Lifecycle and Deployment Architect, plus Platform Developer.

Each component exam costs the standard US$200; the umbrella credentials themselves are free consequences of collecting the set.

At the apex sits the Certified Technical Architect (CTA) — the ecosystem's most demanding credential and its only non-multiple-choice one. Prerequisites are both Application Architect and System Architect; the process is an Architect Review Board evaluation followed by the Review Board Exam, an oral, scenario-based board session with presentation and questioning, at a widely cited total cost of approximately US$6,000. CTAs are scarce, and the credential functions as the ecosystem's professional summit rather than a realistic near-term target for anyone reading a landscape overview.

AI and Agentforce credentials

The AI cluster is the newest and most volatile part of the map, and it splits into paid certification and free recognition.

The Agentforce Specialist certification (formerly AI Specialist) is Salesforce's flagship AI credential: 60 questions, 105 minutes, US$200, covering prompt engineering, Agentforce concepts, and how agents interact with Data Cloud, Service and Sales. A note for bargain hunters: Salesforce ran a free-first-attempt promotion on this exam until 31 December 2025 — that window has closed, and the exam is no longer free. Alongside it, Agentblazer Status (Champion and Innovator tiers live, Legend announced) offers free Trailhead-based recognition that is explicitly not a certification. An Agentforce Marketing certification has been announced for late 2026, replacing several retiring Marketing Cloud credentials, but is not yet available. Cost, format and renewal: the patterns worth memorising

Rather than memorising thirty fact sheets, memorise the catalogue's three pricing tiers and one renewal rule.

Pricing tiers, as of 2026 (all plus applicable taxes, varying by country):

1. US$75 — Platform Foundations, the entry exam.
2. US$200 first attempt / US$100 retake — virtually every role-based exam: admin, developer, builder, analyst, consultant, and each architect component.
3. ~US$6,000 — the CTA review board process, in a category of its own.

Renewal: Salesforce certifications do not expire on the fixed two-or-three-year cycles common elsewhere in IT. Instead, holders complete short, free Trailhead maintenance modules tied to seasonal releases — typically one per certification per year. Complete them on time and the credential stays active indefinitely at no cost; miss a deadline and it goes inactive on your Trailblazer profile. How the tracks chain together

Prerequisites give the catalogue its actual shape, and three chains cover most of it:

• Admin chain: Platform Administrator → Platform Administrator II, and Platform Administrator → any core consultant certification. The admin credential is the busiest junction on the map.
• Developer chain: Platform Developer → Platform Developer II, with Platform Developer also feeding both architect umbrella credentials.
• Architect chain: four exams → Application Architect; four exams → System Architect; both → CTA eligibility.

Foundations, App Builder, Business Analyst, Data 360 Consultant and Agentforce Specialist all currently sit outside the prerequisite web (per available documentation — check the official guide for late changes), which makes them flexible add-ons rather than gateway credentials.

Two consequences follow. First, if you have any interest in consulting, the Platform Administrator certification is nearly unavoidable, which is a large part of why it is the standard first serious exam. Second, developers who add App Builder early are quietly halfway to Application Architect — worth knowing before you pick a "random" second certification.

So which certification should you get?

How many Salesforce certifications are there?

A moving target, and deliberately unnumbered here: with 24 credentials retiring by February 2027 and new Agentforce certifications arriving, any precise count goes stale within months. Are Salesforce certifications worth having without experience?

Do I lose my certification now that its name changed?

No. Both rename waves (July 2025 and July 2026) were name-only: credentials updated automatically on Trailblazer profiles, and no holder was required to retake anything.

Can all these exams be taken online?

Yes — Salesforce exams are proctored and available online or at onsite testing centres, with delivery now handled through Trailhead Academy rather than the old Webassessor system.

What happens to a retired certification I already hold?

Per Salesforce's retirement announcement, retired credentials remain visible and verifiable on profiles and their maintenance requirements disappear, though printed and downloadable certificates become unavailable after 1 February 2027.
