Best Salesforce Certifications for Beginners

A beginner picking a first Salesforce certification in 2026 has a shorter menu than the blog posts from two years ago suggest. The AI Associate credential — once a popular cheap starting point — was retired in 2025, "Salesforce Certified Associate" is now called Platform Foundations, and "Salesforce Certified Administrator" is now Platform Administrator. Strip away the outdated advice and the real beginner decision comes down to two credentials, with a third for a specific type of builder.

The two-certification decision most beginners face

Salesforce publishes dozens of certifications, but almost all of them assume you already work on the platform — consultant exams require the Platform Administrator credential first, architect credentials stack on top of multiple exams, and Platform Administrator II requires Platform Administrator. That leaves a genuinely beginner-friendly shortlist: Platform Foundations, Platform Administrator, and (for people who enjoy building rather than administering) Platform App Builder or Platform Developer, neither of which has prerequisites.

Option 1: Salesforce Certified Platform Foundations — the low-risk starter

Platform Foundations (renamed from "Salesforce Certified Associate" in the July 2025 rebrand) is Salesforce's entry credential, aimed at people with roughly zero to six months of exposure to the platform. The exam is deliberately gentle:

• 40 scored questions (plus up to 5 unscored) in 70 minutes
• Passing score: 62%
• Cost: US$75, plus applicable taxes — Salesforce's prep-community sources have also listed free retakes, though that isn't confirmed on an official page
• No prerequisites

It tests whether you understand what Salesforce is, what the core objects and clouds do, and how the ecosystem fits together. It will not, by itself, get you hired — but it proves to you (and to a hesitant hiring manager) that you've engaged seriously with the platform, and it's the cheapest proctored milestone in the ecosystem.

Choose Foundations if: you're unsure whether Salesforce is for you, you want a confidence-building win before committing to a bigger exam, or your employer will fund a toe-in-the-water credential.

Option 2: Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator — the credential jobs actually ask for

Platform Administrator (formerly Salesforce Certified Administrator, still informally called "ADM-201" in older forum posts) is the workhorse credential of the ecosystem. It's the prerequisite for the consultant certifications and the assumed baseline for admin roles.

• 60 scored questions (plus up to 5 unscored) in 105 minutes
• Passing score: 68% for the English exam as of the current official guide (older guides said 65% — don't rely on legacy figures)
• Cost: US$200 first attempt, US$100 retake, plus taxes; varies by country
• No prerequisites

Choose Platform Administrator first if: you're committed to a Salesforce career, you can sustain several weeks of study, and you want your first US$200 to buy a credential recruiters search for by name.

Option 3: Platform App Builder or Platform Developer — for builders, not administrators

Two other certifications have no prerequisites and occasionally make sense as a first credential:

• Platform App Builder suits people who want to build applications declaratively — data models, page layouts, automation — without code. • Platform Developer (the "I" was dropped from "Platform Developer I" in July 2025) is the coding credential. It has no prerequisites — the persistent claim that you need a degree or prior certifications is a myth — but it assumes you can already write and reason about Apex and Lightning Web Components. It passes at 68% and costs US$200.

For a genuine newcomer with no programming background, neither is the natural first step; but a working software developer moving into the ecosystem can reasonably skip the admin track entirely and start here. Ranked: the best first certifications by beginner profile

There's no universal winner, so here's the ranking by circumstance:

1. Complete career changer, no tech background → Platform Foundations, then Platform Administrator. The $75 exam gives you a structured, low-stakes first target while you build hands-on habits in a free Trailhead playground. Roll straight into admin study afterwards — the content overlaps.
2. Committed career changer with study discipline → Platform Administrator directly. Foundations is skippable if you don't need the confidence scaffold. Nothing on the admin exam requires it.
3. Business user who already works in Salesforce daily → Platform Administrator. You have the contextual knowledge Foundations tests; go for the credential with market weight.
4. Software developer entering the ecosystem → Platform Developer. Your transferable skills point at the higher-paying developer track; the admin exam's declarative minutiae can come later if a role demands it.
5. Analyst or process-mapping professional → Platform Administrator first, Business Analyst later. The Salesforce Certified Business Analyst exam no longer requires the admin credential (that prerequisite was removed in May 2023), but Salesforce recommends around two years of platform experience for it — it isn't a true beginner exam.

What about the AI certifications?

Don't start with AI credentials, and don't chase retired ones. The AI Associate certification is retired — its last exam sitting was 1 May 2025, and it's marked as retired on Trailblazer profiles — so ignore any guide still recommending it as a beginner cert. Salesforce's free replacement recognition is Agentblazer Status on Trailhead, and the paid flagship, Agentforce Specialist, is a US$200 specialist exam whose free-first-attempt promotion ended on 31 December 2025.
