Preparing for the Google Associate Cloud Engineer (ACE) exam comes down to one principle: build the certification on top of hands-on skill, not the other way around. The exam tests whether you can actually operate Google Cloud — deploy resources, configure access, run gcloud commands, troubleshoot what breaks — so a preparation plan that is mostly reading and video-watching sets you up to recognise answers rather than produce them. The plan below is a seven-step sequence that puts a real Google Cloud project at the centre and uses practice tests as measurement instruments, not as the syllabus.
A few orientation facts before the steps, all from Google's official certification page (as of 2026 — verify current details there before booking): the exam runs 50–60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions over 2 hours, costs $125 plus tax where applicable, has no prerequisites, and is delivered by Pearson VUE online or at a test centre. Google recommends 6+ months of hands-on Google Cloud experience, publishes no passing score (results are pass/fail only), and the credential stays valid for 3 years. Start at Google's Associate Cloud Engineer certification page and download the current exam guide. This matters more for ACE than for many exams right now: Google notes the exam has been updated to reflect recent branding changes, meaning older courses, blog posts and question banks may use product names the live exam no longer does. The official guide is the only authoritative statement of what is in scope.
Then do something most candidates skip — convert the guide into a personal tracking document. Copy each objective into a spreadsheet with three columns: can explain it, have done it, can do it from the CLI. That third column is deliberate. The ACE exam persistently probes command-line fluency, and "I watched someone do it" and "I can do it" live far apart on exam day. This tracker becomes the spine of your whole preparation: every study session should turn at least one cell from red to green, and your exam date should wait until the have done it column is nearly full.
Create your own Google Cloud project before you watch a single course video. Google offers free-tier options for new accounts — check current terms on the Google Cloud site, since allowances change — and even beyond free allowances, the resources you need for exam practice are modest if you remember to shut them down. The reason this is step 2 and not step 5 is pedagogical: theory sticks when it lands on top of an experience. With the sandbox running, layer in structured content. Google Cloud Skills Boost, Google's own learning platform, is the natural first stop because its material tracks Google's current product names and includes guided labs in real cloud environments rather than simulations. Third-party video courses can work well too — many candidates prefer their pacing — but apply two filters before committing to one: check its last-updated date against Google's branding-change note from Step 1, and check the ratio of watching to doing. A course you can complete entirely on a phone screen is a warning sign.
Whatever you choose, invert the default consumption pattern. Watch a section, then immediately reproduce it in your own project rather than the course's environment. Reproducing it where things aren't pre-configured is where the learning happens — you hit the permission error the instructor never did, and resolving it teaches you more IAM than the lecture itself.
As you go, keep marking the Step 1 tracker. When a whole objective area stays stubbornly red — commonly networking or Kubernetes for candidates from non-infrastructure backgrounds — slow down and give it dedicated lab time rather than letting the course's pacing carry you past it.
The command line deserves its own step because it is the ACE exam's most reliable filter, and console-only preparation walks straight into it. Set yourself a simple rule for the second half of your preparation: anything you do in the console, you do again with the gcloud CLI.
A practical drill sequence:
Fifteen focused minutes of CLI work daily through the back half of your plan outperforms a weekend cram, because command fluency is muscle memory, and muscle memory is built by frequency.
Sit your first full, timed practice test when you are roughly two-thirds of the way through the objectives — not when you feel "ready". The early benchmark reliably reshapes study plans: most candidates discover their strong domains need less revision than planned and one or two areas (very often identity and access management, or choosing between compute options) need far more. Finding that out with weeks in hand beats finding it out in the exam room.
Use practice tests as instruments, and extract three separate readings from each attempt:

You choose online proctoring from home or an onsite test centre; if you opt for online, do the system and environment checks days ahead, not the morning of. Booking a real date while finishing Step 6 is a deliberate tactic — an exam on the calendar converts drift into a deadline.
The final week is consolidation, not expansion:
On the day, expect pass/fail only: a provisional result on screen at submission, confirmed within 7–10 days. If it goes wrong, the retake terms are workable — Google allows up to 4 attempts in 2 years, with a 14-day wait after a first fail (60 days after a second, 365 after a third) — and a fail plus your practice-test analysis habit amounts to an expensive but precise diagnostic for a second attempt.
