Two clarifications that trip people up. First, the "one year of hands-on experience" is a recommendation, not a requirement — AWS imposes no prerequisites on any of its exams, so you may book SAA-C03 as your first-ever AWS certificate. Second, version anxiety. As of August 2026, AWS's coming-soon page lists no SAA-C04. What the questions actually look like

Understanding the question style matters as much as knowing the content, because SAA-C03 does not test recall — it tests judgement between plausible options.

Scenario stems with competing constraints

Most questions describe a business situation and end with a qualifier: most cost-effectively, with the least operational overhead, with the highest availability. That final clause is the real question. The same scenario with "most cost-effective" versus "most performant" can have different correct answers, and wrong options are usually valid architectures that optimise for the wrong constraint. Train yourself to underline the qualifier mentally before reading the options.

Multiple choice and multiple response only

The exam uses two question types: multiple choice (pick one of four) and multiple response (pick two or more, with the required count stated). There are no labs, no fill-in-the-blank, and none of the newer ordering, matching or case-study formats AWS introduced on its AI exams in 2024 — the official SAA-C03 page still lists only the classic two types. Multiple-response questions give no partial credit logic you can rely on, so treat each one as all-or-nothing and slow down accordingly.

Short service names

A relatively recent quality-of-life change: AWS exams now display short service names (for example, the console-style short forms) with a full-name reference available behind the Help button during the exam. If a name looks unfamiliar in the moment, the glossary is one click away — remember it exists before you panic.

What SAA-C03 tests, in practical terms

AWS publishes the authoritative syllabus as the SAA-C03 exam guide, a free PDF linked from the certification page. It defines the content domains, their percentage weightings and the in-scope services list. Get it first and let its weightings drive your study calendar — reproducing the exact percentages here would only go stale when AWS revises them. What follows is an interpretation of the territory: what the exam is really examining underneath the domain labels.

Designing for resilience. The exam's centre of gravity is architectures that survive failure: multi-Availability-Zone deployments, load balancing, auto scaling, database replication and failover, decoupling components with queues so one failure does not cascade. If you can explain why an application spread across two Availability Zones behind a load balancer survives events that a single-server design does not — and what that protection costs — you are thinking the way the exam wants.

Designing for security. Identity and Access Management is everywhere: least-privilege policies, roles versus access keys, and controlling traffic with security groups and network boundaries inside a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). Encryption choices — in transit, at rest, and who manages the keys — recur across storage and database scenarios.

Designing for performance. Choosing the right storage class, database engine, caching layer or content-delivery approach for a workload's access pattern. The exam loves questions where the naive answer works but a purpose-built service works better.

Designing for cost. Not billing-tool trivia, but architectural cost judgement: when commitment-based pricing beats on-demand, when object storage beats block storage, when serverless eliminates idle spend. Cost appears as a qualifier attached to otherwise-technical questions more often than as a standalone topic.

A preparation sequence that works

Study-hour totals vary too much by background for a universal figure, so here is a sequence with checkpoints instead. Move to the next stage when the checkpoint holds, however long that takes.

Stage 1 — Frame the syllabus. Read the official exam guide end to end, including the in-scope services appendix. Sort services into three personal buckets: know well, recognise only, never met. Your study plan is the second and third buckets. Checkpoint: you can sketch the exam's domain structure from memory.

Stage 2 — Primary course plus running notes. Work through one comprehensive SAA-C03 course (video or text — your preference), keeping your own notes on decision criteria: not "what is this service" but "when do I choose it over its neighbours". Stage 3 — Build things. Architect judgement does not form from videos alone. Stage 4 — Timed benchmarking and gap repair. Sit a full-length, timed practice exam in one 130-minute block. The point is diagnosis: score by domain, find the weakest one, restudy it, retest. Exam-day tactics for a 130-minute exam

  • Budget two minutes per question. 65 questions in 130 minutes is exactly 2:00 each. Long scenario stems make some questions three-minute reads, so bank time on the short ones.
  • Flag and move on. The review screen lets you return to flagged questions. A question you cannot crack in three minutes is stealing marks from five questions you could.
  • Answer everything. There is no penalty for wrong answers. A guess scores better than a blank, every time.
  • Eliminate by constraint. When stuck, delete options that contradict the qualifier (an expensive option under "most cost-effective", a manually-managed option under "least operational overhead"). Two deletions turn a guess into a coin toss with better odds.
  • Distrust familiarity. An option can be a service you know well and wrong for this scenario. Match the option to the constraint, not to your comfort.

Cost, retakes and the discount voucher

The exam fee is $150 USD as of 2026, with local pricing and taxes varying by country — AWS's pricing policy page has the current figure for your region. Budget for the possibility of a retake rather than treating the first attempt as all-or-nothing; AWS's retake policies are published on its testing-policy pages, so check the current waiting rules there.

One fee-saver is under-used: if you already hold any active AWS certification — including Cloud Practitioner — AWS gives you a 50% discount voucher for your next exam, which cuts SAA-C03 to effectively $75. Validity, renewal and what follows SAA-C03

The certification is valid for three years. You can renew by retaking the current Solutions Architect Associate exam, or — more productively — by passing the Solutions Architect Professional exam (SAP-C02), which renews the associate credential automatically. Frequently asked questions

Is there an older SAA version I should worry about?

SAA-C02 was the previous exam version and has been replaced; SAA-C03 has been the live version since August 2022. If you find study material labelled SAA-C02, treat it cautiously — much overlaps, but the in-scope services list differs. Can I sit SAA-C03 from home?

Yes — online proctoring through Pearson VUE is available alongside test centres. You need a private, quiet room for the full 130 minutes, an identity check via webcam, and no interruptions. Given this exam's length, be more conservative about your environment than you would for a shorter exam.

How many questions are scored?

AWS does not publish a verified scored/unscored breakdown for SAA-C03, and the commonly repeated figures are unofficial. It makes no practical difference to strategy: you cannot identify unscored items, so answer every question as if it counts.

Does the exam ask me to write or read code?

The exam is architecture-focused: choosing services and designs, not writing application code. You may need to read policy documents or interpret configuration concepts, but programming ability is not what is being measured — that emphasis belongs to the Developer Associate exam.
