Retaking a certification exam with the same notes, the same videos and the same routine is the most common retake mistake there is. If your methods produced a fail once, more hours inside those methods mostly buys you a slightly better fail. The candidates who pass on the second attempt usually change what they do, not just how long they do it — and the change starts with a document most people barely read: the score report.
This article is the tactical playbook: how to diagnose exactly where the first attempt went wrong, how to map those gaps back to the official exam objectives, and which study methods to replace. Your score report is a diagnostic instrument, not a verdict. Most major certification programmes give failing candidates at least a domain-level performance breakdown — a list of the exam's content areas with an indicator of how you performed in each. Before you open a single study resource, sit down with that report and answer three questions in writing:
One caution on interpretation: on scaled-score exams, your number is not a percentage of questions answered correctly. Amazon Web Services (AWS), for example, scores its exams on a 100–1,000 scale precisely so that different exam forms of slightly different difficulty can be equated, and its exam guides note that some questions are unscored pilot items. That is one verified reason your felt performance and your actual score can diverge. Treat the domain breakdown as directional evidence, not a precise map — then verify it yourself in Step 2.
The score report tells you which domains were weak. It does not tell you which objectives inside those domains you missed. That resolution comes from a gap analysis:
This usually takes one evening and it is the highest-leverage evening of your entire retake. Everything after this point is executed against that repair list.
Here is the uncomfortable audit. For each weak objective, ask: how did I study this the first time? Patterns of failure map to methods with remarkable consistency:
Passive review is the most heavily used and least effective mainstream technique. Dunlosky and colleagues' 2013 review in Psychological Science in the Public Interest rated rereading and highlighting as low-utility techniques, while rating practice testing and distributed practice as the highest-utility ones. Rereading feels productive because the material becomes fluent and familiar — and familiarity is exactly what an exam does not test. The evidence comparison is unpacked in active recall vs rereading; the practical takeaway for your retake is blunt: replace review sessions with retrieval sessions.
Massed study reliably loses to spaced study for retention — the spacing effect is one of the most replicated findings in learning research (Cepeda et al., 2006). If your first attempt was built on a late surge, your retake plan should spread the same material over more sessions with deliberate gaps, and schedule returns to each weak objective rather than "finishing" it once. Running the same question bank until the score looks good trains answer recognition, not capability. Two symptoms: your practice scores climbed steeply on repeat attempts, and unfamiliar phrasings on the real exam felt disorienting. The fix is to treat every practice question as a diagnostic — read the explanation, trace the miss to an objective, and re-derive the answer from the underlying concept — and to keep genuinely unseen questions in reserve for benchmarking.
Some candidates know the definitions cold and still fail, because the exam asks them to choose between plausible options in a scenario. The repair here is explanation and application work: talk through each weak concept in plain language until you can justify why the wrong options are wrong. Now assemble the retake plan. It should look visibly different from the first one:
You are not the same candidate walking in twice. The first attempt bought you something most first-timers never have: real data about exactly where your preparation breaks down. Spend one evening decoding the score report, one evening on the gap analysis, and then rebuild the plan around retrieval, spacing and targeted repair. Candidates who change methods give the retake a genuinely different input — and different inputs are what produce different results.
