How to Use Practice Questions Without Over-Relying on Them

Question drilling feels productive but can hollow out your prep. How to set the right ratio of practice questions to real study, phase by phase.

There is a candidate — most exam forums have hundreds of them — who has answered four thousand practice questions and cannot explain the topic behind any of them. Question drilling is the fast food of exam prep: quick, satisfying, and genuinely nutritious in the right portion, but a diet you cannot live on alone. The fix is not to drill less enthusiastically; it is to give practice questions a defined job inside a study plan where primary materials do the teaching. As a working rule, questions should consume roughly a quarter to a third of your study time early on, rising towards half only in the final stretch before the exam — with the rest going to study guides, documentation, courses, labs and note-making.

This article is about getting that balance right: what questions are for, how much of your time they deserve at each phase, and what must fill the remainder.

Why practice questions alone won't pass the exam

The research that makes practice testing valuable also defines its limit. Retrieval practice strengthens memory for material you have already encountered — Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 work showed testing beat re-studying for long-term retention, and Dunlosky and colleagues' 2013 review rated practice testing among the highest-utility techniques. Notice the shared assumption: there is something in your head to retrieve. Questions exercise knowledge; they are a thin and scattershot way to acquire it.

Three structural problems follow when a question bank becomes your syllabus:

Coverage is accidental. Exams are built from published objectives. A question bank samples those objectives; it does not exhaust them. Drill-only candidates learn the sampled patches deeply and the unsampled ones not at all — and cannot tell which is which. The exam, drawn independently from the same objectives, finds the gaps immediately.

Explanations are not instruction. A good question's explanation tells you why option B beats option C in one scenario. It does not build the mental model that would let you handle the neighbouring scenario. Reading two hundred explanations about a topic is a slow, disordered substitute for reading the four pages of documentation the explanations are all pointing at.

Applied exams punish shallow pattern-matching. Modern certification exams lean on scenario and performance-based formats — CompTIA's current A+ and Security+ exams, for example, mix multiple-choice with performance-based items in their official formats. Pattern-matching learned from drilling multiple-choice stems transfers poorly to "do the task" and "here is a novel situation" items.

There is a fourth problem — reusing the same bank until you are recognising answers rather than reasoning — but that memorisation trap deserves its own treatment, which it gets in how to avoid memorising practice test answers.

The signs of question-bank dependency

Be honest against this list:

  • Your study log is measured in questions answered, not objectives covered.
  • You have never read the provider's exam objectives document end to end.
  • When an explanation confuses you, you memorise its conclusion and move on rather than opening a primary source.
  • You feel anxious studying anything that doesn't produce a score.
  • Asked to explain a core exam topic to a colleague for two minutes, you would struggle past thirty seconds.
  • Your scores plateaued weeks ago no matter how many new questions you feed in.

Two or more of these and the balance is off. A plateau in particular is diagnostic: drilling has extracted everything it can from your current knowledge, and only new input — not more output — will move the number. What share of study time should questions get?

There is no provider-published ratio — no certification body publishes official study-hour prescriptions, so treat every ratio you read, including this one, as editorial guidance rather than a cited rule. That said, a defensible allocation follows from what each activity does, and it shifts across three phases.

Phase 1 — building (first half of your prep): questions ≈ 20–30%

Primary materials dominate: the official exam objectives as your map, then study guides, documentation, video courses and hands-on labs to build the model of each domain. Phase 2 — consolidating (third quarter): questions ≈ 40%

Now retrieval earns a bigger share, because there is real knowledge to retrieve and gaps worth finding. Alternate deliberately: a question session identifies a weak area; the next study session fixes it from primary sources; a later question session verifies the fix. Phase 3 — finishing (final quarter): questions ≈ 50%, mostly full-length

Late prep is where question work peaks: timed, full-length, exam-condition practice to train pacing and stamina, with the remaining half of your time spent processing what those tests reveal — reviewing misses, patching the last weak domains, and rereading only what the tests say you need. Even here, questions never reach 100%: a mock that doesn't change what you study the next day was only half used.

These percentages are a starting posture, not a law. Experienced practitioners who live in the material daily can weight questions more heavily from the start; complete newcomers should hold Phase 1 discipline longer.

What fills the non-question time

"Study more" is useless advice without specifics. The non-question share of your plan should be spent, in roughly this priority order:

  1. The official exam objectives document — read fully, then used as a checklist. Every objective gets a confidence rating you update weekly. This single habit prevents the accidental-coverage problem outright.
  2. One primary study source per domain — official documentation, an official study guide, or a reputable course. One deep source beats three skimmed ones.
  3. Hands-on work where the exam rewards it — labs, free tiers, home setups. Performance-based questions are answered with fingers, not flashcards.

A corrective week for the over-drilled candidate

If you recognise yourself in the dependency list, here is a one-week reset that keeps questions in your plan while restoring the balance:

  • Day 1: No questions. Read your exam's official objectives document end to end and rate every line: know it / shaky / no idea.
  • Days 2–4: For each "no idea" objective, study from a primary source and write a half-page summary in your own words. Finish each day with ten questions only on that day's objectives.
  • Day 5: One full-length, timed set of questions you have not seen before — a fresh draw matters, whether from a new source or a timed practice-test simulation with a rotating pool.
  • Day 6: No new questions. Review every miss from Day 5 back to its objective and its primary source.
  • Day 7: Update the objective ratings, plan the next fortnight with the phase ratios above, and notice how different the plan looks when objectives, not question counts, are the unit of progress.

Most candidates find Day 1 the hardest and the most valuable. It is difficult to over-rely on questions once you have seen, line by line, exactly what they were standing in for.

Questions are the compass, not the map

Keep the metaphor that makes the balance easy to hold: primary materials are the map of the territory; practice questions are the compass telling you where you currently stand on it. A candidate with only a map wanders confidently in the wrong places; a candidate with only a compass knows precisely where they are lost. You need both, you consult the compass often — and you still spend most of the journey actually walking the map. When you next open a question bank, whether the free samples on your exam's page or a full simulation, ask one question first: what is this session for — finding a gap, verifying a fix, or rehearsing the performance? If you can answer that, you are using practice questions. If you can't, they are using you.
