Repeated practice-test failure is almost never a sign that you "can't do exams". It is a symptom with a small number of common causes — a passive study method, specific knowledge gaps, pacing problems, question-reading errors, or anxiety — and each cause has a different fix. Applying the wrong fix is why so many candidates study harder and score exactly the same.
That last point matters. If your last three mock scores are 58%, 61% and 59%, the problem is not effort. Doubling your study hours while keeping the same method usually reproduces the same plateau, just with more exhaustion attached. This article is a troubleshooting guide: first work out which failure pattern you have, then apply the fix that matches it. Before diagnosing yourself, check that your scores mean what you think they mean.
Two mechanics distort practice-versus-real comparisons. First, most major certification exams use scaled scoring rather than percentage-correct: CompTIA Security+ requires 750 on a 100–900 scale, and AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner requires 700 on a 100–1,000 scale. A scaled score is not a percentage, so "I need 75%" is often the wrong mental target. Second, some providers include unscored pilot questions — AWS's official exam guides state that 15 of 65 questions are unscored — which is one documented reason felt performance and actual scores diverge.
Practice platforms usually report a plain percentage, so a "fail" against an arbitrary threshold may not map cleanly onto the real exam's bar. You still want a comfortable margin, but make sure you know what your provider's real passing rule is before concluding you are hopeless. If your scores are genuinely and persistently below any sensible bar, move on to diagnosis.
Pull your last two or three practice-test results and answer these questions honestly:
Most struggling candidates have one dominant pattern plus one minor one. Fix the dominant pattern first.
This is the most common root cause. Re-reading notes, re-watching videos and highlighting feel productive but build weak recall. The learning-science literature is blunt about it: Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 research on test-enhanced learning found that practising retrieval beat restudying for long-term retention, and Dunlosky and colleagues' 2013 review of study techniques rated practice testing and distributed practice as the highest-utility techniques while rating rereading and highlighting low.
The tell-tale signs: everything "looks familiar" when you review, yet you cannot produce the answer under exam conditions; your confidence before each mock is high and your score is not.
The fix: invert your ratio of input to output. Instead of reading a chapter three times, read it once, close it, and force recall — explain the concept aloud, answer questions on it, write the process from memory. Space this retrieval over days rather than cramming it into one session; Cepeda and colleagues' 2006 synthesis found spaced study reliably outperforms massed study. Practice questions become your primary study activity, not your final check. If your misses cluster in particular domains, you do not have a general problem — you have two or three specific ones. Candidates often unconsciously avoid their weakest topics because studying them feels bad, then get punished by the exam's blueprint, which does not care what you enjoyed revising.
The fix: stop taking full mocks for a fortnight and go narrow. Identify the weak domains precisely (the mechanics of doing that with domain-level score breakdowns are covered in how to find your weakest exam domains), then restudy those areas from your primary material and drill questions on only those domains until they stop dragging the average down. Note that some exams score compensatorily — AWS's guides confirm you need only pass overall, not each domain — so a weak domain is survivable, but a weak third of the exam is not.
If you keep re-sitting the same question pool, rising familiarity can mask falling learning — you recognise answer patterns without being able to handle a reworded version. The cruel result is a candidate who "passes" their practice set and still fails anything novel, or who fails even the familiar set because they memorised answer letters rather than reasoning.
The fix: rotate question sources, paraphrase questions in your own words before answering, and justify why each wrong option is wrong. Some candidates know the material and still fail because they spend four minutes on early questions and guess the last ten, or because they answer the question they expected rather than the one asked. Certification questions are frequently "best answer among plausible answers", and scenario stems hide the decisive detail mid-paragraph.
The fix:
If you can answer questions casually with a coffee but fall apart when a timer starts, the bottleneck is arousal, not knowledge. Anxiety narrows working memory exactly when scenario questions demand it, and each failed mock feeds the dread that produces the next one.
The fix is exposure with graduated stakes. Take more low-stakes quizzes, not fewer — short, frequent, deliberately unthreatening sessions rebuild the association between "timer running" and "normal activity". Once you know your dominant cause, structure the recovery:
A realistic example: a candidate stuck at 60% on AWS Cloud Practitioner mocks logged two weeks of errors and found that half her misses were in billing and pricing questions and a quarter were misread "EXCEPT"-style stems. Targeted restudy of one domain plus a stem-underlining habit — not more total hours — is what moves that score. Sometimes repeated failure is honest feedback that you sat the material too early — a candidate with three weeks of exposure attempting mocks pitched at someone with a year of hands-on experience will fail them repeatedly, and no technique fixes a foundation that is not there yet. If your misses are scattered, your error log says "never seen this" more often than "knew it but fumbled", and restudy feels like first contact rather than revision, step back to your primary learning material and return to full mocks later. That is not defeat; it is sequencing.
Twice. One low score is data; two similar low scores after further study is a pattern. At that point, stop repeating the loop, diagnose the cause using the questions above, and change the method — not just the volume.
Keep taking questions — retrieval is how you learn — but pause full-length mocks until you have done targeted work on your diagnosed weaknesses. Feelings are a poor readiness gauge in both directions. Look for consistent scores with a margin above the pass mark across fresh material — the concrete go/no-go signals are set out in how to know when you are ready for a certification exam.
Difficulty calibration varies by source, which is one more reason to rotate sources and focus on trends rather than single numbers. Remember also that real exams use scaled scoring and unscored pilot items, so practice percentages and real scores are never a perfect one-to-one match.
Failing the same way twice is a signal; failing the same way five times is a choice to keep using a method that is not working. Diagnose first — concentrated or scattered misses, knowledge or handling, calm or panicked — then apply the one fix that matches.
