Certifications That Can Help You Become a Network Engineer

Here is a misconception that quietly derails people: that becoming a network engineer requires climbing a mandatory certification ladder, permission slip by permission slip. It does not. Cisco abolished formal prerequisites across its written exams in 2020 — you could, in theory, sit the CCNP Enterprise core exam tomorrow with nothing behind it. No provider gate stands between an IT technician and any of these exams.

What actually stands between a technician and a network engineer job is proof: proof you can configure, troubleshoot and reason about networks at a depth employers can rely on. Certifications are the most legible form that proof takes, which is why nearly every network engineer posting still names them. So the roadmap below is not a list of permissions to collect — it is a sequence of proofs, ordered so that each one is genuinely reachable from the one before, with the exam facts, costs and renewal mechanics you need to plan the climb. What a network engineer does that a technician does not

The title varies by company, but the shift is consistent: technicians and support specialists keep an existing network healthy at the edges — patching, port changes, first-line diagnosis — while engineers design, build and change the network itself. Routing protocol decisions, redundancy design, firewall and WAN architecture, capacity planning, and increasingly automation of all of the above. The certification path below mirrors that shift: early stages prove you understand networks, later stages prove you can be trusted to change them.

The economics of making the jump are visible in US federal data. Computer network support specialists earned a median of $76,220 and user support specialists $61,860 (BLS OEWS, May 2025), while the network and computer systems administrators category — the closest BLS bucket to hands-on network roles — showed a median of $96,800 (May 2024). On the certification side, the Skillsoft IT Skills and Salary Survey (fielded 2024, published 2025) reported US averages of $112,333 for CCNA holders and $144,912 for CCNP Enterprise holders. None of these numbers is a promise — they are medians and self-reported averages, moved heavily by experience and location — but the gradient they sketch is the reason this roadmap exists.

Stage 0: Take stock before you buy a voucher

Do not start by booking an exam. Start with an honest inventory:

  • Already supporting networks at work? You can likely skip straight to Stage 2 (CCNA) and backfill theory as you study.
  • In IT but not touching the network? Stage 1 (Network+) gives you the vocabulary and a credential while you angle for network-adjacent tickets.
  • New to IT entirely? A general IT foundation comes first — that on-ramp is mapped in what certification to take after CompTIA A+, and this roadmap picks you up at Stage 1. Also decide now what lab environment you will use. Every stage after this one is won or lost in practice configuration, not in reading. Stage 1: CompTIA Network+ — vocabulary and fundamentals

Exam: N10-009 (current since June 2024). Up to 90 questions, 90 minutes, multiple-choice and performance-based, passing score 720 on a 100–900 scale. US retail ~$399 after CompTIA's June 2026 price rise (reseller-listed; varies by country). Valid three years, renewed with 30 CEUs through CompTIA's CE programme.

Network+ is vendor-neutral by design: subnetting, routing and switching concepts, wireless standards, common protocols, security basics, structured troubleshooting. For an aspiring engineer its role is scaffolding — it makes the CCNA learnable rather than overwhelming, and it gets past HR filters at organisations that just want "a networking cert" on the CV.

Is it skippable? Genuinely, sometimes. A technician who already subnets in their head and knows what a default gateway is doing at 2 a.m. can go straight to Stage 2 and lose nothing. If terms like OSPF or VLAN trunking are still fuzzy, the money and month you spend here repay themselves during CCNA study. What Network+ will not do on its own is get you a network engineer interview — do not stall at this stage polishing a foundation credential when the hiring signal lives one rung up.

Stage 2: Cisco CCNA — the credential that opens the interview door

Exam: 200-301, exam topics v1.1 (in effect since 20 August 2024). One exam, 120 minutes, US $300 plus regional taxes, at Pearson VUE centres or online via OnVUE. Cisco publishes neither question count nor passing score — treat every specific figure you read in forums as folklore. Valid three years; renew via 30 CE credits, re-passing an associate exam, or any professional-level exam. Fail, and you wait five calendar days and pay full price to retake.

This is the pivotal stage of the entire roadmap. The CCNA is the credential that turns "IT technician interested in networking" into "candidate for junior network engineer" in a recruiter's triage pass. Its v1.1 topics span routing and switching configuration, IP services, wireless, security fundamentals, and — reflecting where the trade is going — automation, programmability, cloud network management and generative AI awareness.

Treat the study phase as an apprenticeship, not a memorisation project:

  1. Work the official exam topics as a syllabus. Cisco publishes them free; build your lab sessions around them rather than around a course's chapter order.
  2. Configure everything twice. Once following instructions, once from a blank config days later. The exam's lab-style items — and every interview whiteboard — reward recall under pressure.
  3. Benchmark before you book. A timed, full-length simulation a few weeks out tells you whether you are ready and, more usefully, where you are not: read the results by domain and spend your final fortnight on the weakest two. How long does this stage take? Cisco publishes no figure and neither will we; community experience commonly lands in a range of a few months of part-time study for people without deep experience, and your practice-test trajectory is a far better forecaster than any average.

Making the CCNA pay immediately: the certificate alone rarely teleports you into an engineer title. Its real function is to justify giving you network work — so convert it within weeks. Ask for the VLAN changes, the switch replacement, the site-to-site VPN ticket. Six months of CCNA-plus-real-changes outweighs two years of CCNA-in-a-drawer at interview.

Stage 3: Cisco CCNP Enterprise — the engineer's certification

Structure: two exams. The core, 350-401 ENCOR (120 minutes, US $400), plus one 90-minute concentration (US $300) — roughly $700 minimum in fees, varying by region. No formal prerequisites; Cisco suggests three to five years of experience, and the content means it. Valid three years; renewable with 80 CE credits, one professional core exam, two concentrations, or a mix — and any Cisco exam you pass along the way renews your CCNA automatically.

Where the CCNA opens the junior-engineer door, CCNP Enterprise is the mid-level engineer's badge — the certification that postings for "network engineer" without the word "junior" tend to name. Two structural facts matter to your planning:

  • ENCOR alone is already worth something. Passing it grants a Cisco Certified Specialist badge and qualifies you for the CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure lab. If life interrupts between exams, you have not banked nothing.
  • The core changed recently. ENCOR moved to exam topics v1.2 on 19 March 2026: wireless content left the core for the wireless concentrations, while SD-WAN, automation and AI-assisted operations grew. Check that any course or question bank you buy targets v1.2, and drill it by domain with ENCOR 350-401 practice questions so the newer automation material gets as much attention as the routing you already live in.

For the concentration, pick by the job you want rather than by popularity. 300-410 ENARSI (advanced routing and services) is the most popular and the strongest general-purpose engineering signal; 300-415 ENSDWI suits SD-WAN-heavy environments; 300-420 ENSLD leans design; 300-435 ENAUTO doubles down on automation. The roster shifts, so confirm the live list on Cisco's site before committing study money.

Stage 4: Beyond CCNP — expert level and sideways depth

Most people reading this will get hired as network engineers during Stage 3. What sits beyond is worth knowing about mainly so your plan has a horizon:

  • CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure. ENCOR is the qualifier; the certification then demands an eight-hour hands-on lab at US $1,600 per attempt (plus travel), with a 30-day wait after a failed lab and no refunds. Cisco suggests five to seven years of experience. Skillsoft's survey reported US CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure respondents averaging $166,524, though it flagged that figure as drawn from fewer than 100 responses — quote it to yourself cautiously. This is a multi-year commitment for senior engineers, not the next box after CCNP.
  • The Automation track. Cisco rebranded DevNet to "Automation" on 3 February 2026 — CCNA Automation (exam 200-901) and CCNP Automation now sit alongside the enterprise track. Given that both CCNA v1.1 and ENCOR v1.2 pushed automation deeper into the mainstream exams, engineers who script are increasingly the default rather than the exception.
  • Multi-vendor breadth. A realistic route, end to end

To make the stages concrete: picture a desktop support technician at a mid-sized firm, two years in, comfortable with hardware and Windows but new to routing. She skips CCST, spends a couple of months on Network+ to cement fundamentals, then commits the following months to CCNA study with nightly Packet Tracer labs, booking the exam only after her timed practice runs come back consistently strong across every domain. Certificate in hand, she lobbies her manager for network tickets and spends a year doing switch refreshes and firewall rule changes alongside her support duties. She then applies for junior network engineer roles inside and outside the company — interviewing with configs she has actually written — and starts ENCOR v1.2 study once she is in post, aiming to complete CCNP Enterprise with ENARSI within her CCNA's three-year window so the renewal takes care of itself. No step in that story requires luck; every step requires the previous one.

Readiness checklist before each exam booking

  • The official exam-topics PDF read line by line, with nothing on it you could not at least whiteboard.
  • Labs rebuilt from scratch without notes for every configuration topic.
  • Full-length timed practice runs completed under exam conditions, with results reviewed by domain and the weakest areas re-studied — not re-answered until familiar.
  • Current exam version confirmed on the provider's page (200-301 v1.1 and ENCOR v1.2 as of August 2026 — versions move).
  • Retake economics accepted: Cisco's five-day wait and full fee mean booking a fortnight later is cheaper than booking optimistically.

Is the CCNA still worth it now that automation and AI are reshaping networking?
