How to Improve Accuracy Without Sacrificing Exam Speed

Careless mistakes costing you practice-test marks? Train the speed–accuracy trade-off with error logs and progressive timing instead of just slowing down.

"Slow down and read the question properly" is the advice every careless test-taker has already received, and it fails for a predictable reason: the real exam has a clock, and any accuracy gain that only exists at low speed evaporates the moment time pressure returns. Accuracy you can't keep at exam pace isn't accuracy — it's a laboratory condition.

The workable alternative is to treat speed and accuracy the way athletes treat power and technique: train them together, at a controlled and gradually increasing intensity, with every error examined rather than shrugged off. First, find out what your "careless" errors really are

Most candidates lump every avoidable miss into one bucket labelled silly mistakes. But you cannot fix a bucket; you can only fix patterns. So the foundation of accuracy training is an error log: a simple running record where, after every practice session, each miss gets a line — the topic, what you answered, what was right, and why you missed it.

For the why, most rushed errors fall into a small taxonomy:

  1. Misread the stem — skimmed past a "NOT", "EXCEPT", "LEAST" or "first step" qualifier and answered a different question than the one asked.
  2. Stopped reading the options too early — grabbed the first plausible answer without checking whether a later option was more correct, a classic trap on best-answer formats.
  3. Ignored a constraint in the scenario — the question specified a budget limit, a security requirement or a scale condition that eliminates your chosen answer.
  4. Mechanical slip — miskeyed a calculation, transposed values, selected two options where three were required.
  5. Actually didn't know it — this one is not a careless error at all; it goes back into your study queue as a knowledge gap.

After two or three sessions, the log stops looking random. Almost everyone discovers one or two dominant categories — and a dominant category is a trainable target. A misread-the-stem candidate needs a different fix (underline the qualifier before reading options) than a stopped-too-early candidate (always read all options and articulate why the rejected ones are wrong). One reassurance while you log: a few misses on any practice set are normal and not always meaningful. Log everything, but chase patterns, not perfection.

The progressive timing ladder

With your error patterns named, train against them at increasing speed. The principle borrows from any skill practised under pressure: establish correct form slowly, then raise the tempo only as fast as the form holds.

Rung 1: untimed, full-protocol practice

Work question sets with no clock, but with your personal accuracy protocol running deliberately every time — underline qualifiers, read every option, check the scenario's constraints against your answer. The goal of this rung is not knowledge; it is making the protocol automatic. Stay here until a set produces zero errors from your dominant categories.

Rung 2: generous timing

Introduce a clock at roughly half again the real exam's per-question pace. The clock's job on this rung is mild: enough presence to stop you luxuriating, not enough to trigger rushing.

Rung 3: real exam pace, short blocks

Move to the true per-question pace, but in blocks of 15–25 questions rather than full papers. Short blocks let you repeat the pressure exposure frequently and review errors while the reasoning is still fresh. This is the rung where careless errors resurface — expect it. Every reappearance goes in the log, and the response is targeted: rework that error category at Rung 1 briefly, then return.

Rung 4: full-length timed simulation

Full papers, real pace, no pauses — the dress rehearsal. A timed practice-test simulation at this rung tells you two things at once: whether your score clears the bar, and whether your error log stays clean under a full-duration cognitive load, which is where fatigue-driven slips reveal themselves. The rule that makes the ladder work: you earn the next rung with a clean error log, not with a calendar date. Climbing on schedule while still bleeding careless errors just rehearses the mistakes faster.

Why this beats "just be more careful"

Willpower-based carefulness is a resource that time pressure consumes. A trained protocol is not: once underlining the qualifier or eliminating options in order becomes automatic, it costs almost no time — a few seconds per question — and it keeps operating when you are tired, anxious and forty questions deep. That is the whole trade resolved: you are not spending speed to buy accuracy; you are automating accuracy so it stops costing speed.

There is also a measurement payoff. Because every rung is logged, you finish your preparation knowing — not hoping — that you can hold your target accuracy at exam pace. A four-week version of the plan

For a candidate mid-preparation who discovers a careless-error problem:

  • Week 1: start the error log; classify a fortnight's worth of misses; identify the one or two dominant categories; design the matching protocol steps. Practice untimed (Rung 1).
  • Week 2: Rung 2 sessions on alternate days; protocol steps still deliberate; log reviewed after every session.
  • Week 3: Rung 3 short blocks at real pace, three to four times in the week; brief Rung 1 repair work whenever a category resurfaces.
  • Week 4: two full-length Rung 4 simulations, spaced a few days apart, with a complete log review between them.

Fast and right are the same skill

The speed–accuracy trade-off feels like a law of nature, but in practice it is mostly a description of untrained test-taking. Name your error patterns, wire the countermeasures into an automatic protocol, and raise the tempo one earned rung at a time. By exam day, working quickly and working correctly should no longer be a choice you make under pressure — they should be the same habit.
