The most dangerous gaps in your exam knowledge are the ones that feel like strengths. Rereading a chapter until it looks familiar produces a sense of fluency that has little to do with whether you could answer a question on it cold — which is why candidates walk out of exams stunned by topics they "knew". To identify knowledge gaps before an exam, you have to stop asking "does this look familiar?" and start forcing recall: testing yourself blind, auditing your coverage against the official objectives, and checking whether your confidence matches your accuracy.

Recognition is not recall. When you reread notes or a study guide, the material becomes easier to process each time, and your brain misreads that ease as mastery. Research on the testing effect — notably Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 work in Psychological Science — found that practising retrieval beats restudying for long-term retention, and a major 2013 review by Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing among the highest-utility study techniques while placing rereading and highlighting near the bottom.
The practical consequence: a gap analysis built on "I've covered that chapter" is a list of what you have seen, not what you know. Every technique below works because it forces you to produce an answer before you see one.
A full-length practice test taken without notes is the fastest gap detector available, precisely because it samples topics you would never have volunteered to test yourself on. Sit it under exam-like conditions and treat the score as diagnostic data, not a verdict. If you are early in your prep rather than close to the exam, the same logic argues for a diagnostic test before you start studying — the earlier the baseline, the cheaper the gaps are to fix.
The output you want is not the overall score. It is the per-topic breakdown: which sections of the syllabus produced wrong answers, slow answers, or guesses.
Every major certification publishes an exam guide or objectives list — for example, the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner and Solutions Architect Associate exam guides on AWS's certification pages, or CompTIA's objectives for each exam version. Print the list and rate every line item on a three-point scale:
Anything rated 2 or 3 is a gap. Be ruthless with the 2s: "could recognise it" is exactly the fluency illusion described above, and scenario-based questions punish it. This audit also catches a failure mode practice tests can miss — objectives you have never studied at all, which no amount of question practice on other topics will reveal.
Pick an objective, close the book, and write or say everything you know about it — definitions, how it works, when you'd use it, how it differs from its nearest neighbour concept. Then open the source material and compare. The differences between your explanation and the reference are your gaps, mapped at a finer grain than any test score: you will see not just that you are weak on a topic but which part of it is missing.
This is slow, so reserve it for topics your practice tests have already flagged as shaky, or for heavily weighted domains where a coarse "weak/strong" label isn't enough.
During any practice session, mark every question where you were not sure — even the ones you got right. A correct answer reached by elimination or luck is a hidden gap: the score sheet says you know it, but exam day may disagree. Some exams make lucky guesses genuinely invisible in your data; AWS exam guides, for instance, state there is no penalty for guessing and unanswered questions count as incorrect, so a rational test-taker answers everything — which means raw accuracy always overstates knowledge somewhat.
A simple flag ("sure" / "unsure") on each question splits your results into four categories. Sure-and-right is mastery. Unsure-and-right and unsure-and-wrong are both gaps. Sure-and-wrong is the most urgent category of all: a confidently held misconception.
Not every miss is a knowledge gap. When you review a practice test, classify each error: didn't know the fact, knew it but misapplied it, misread the question, or ran out of time. Only the first two are knowledge gaps; the others need different fixes. Individual wrong answers are noise; patterns are signal. After two or three practice sessions, tally your unsure-or-wrong questions by exam objective. Three misses spread across three domains tells you little. Three misses inside one sub-objective tells you exactly where to spend tomorrow. If your exam publishes domain weightings, weight your tally by them: a moderate gap in a domain worth a quarter of the exam matters more than a large gap in one worth a twentieth.
Two cautions when reading your map. First, small samples mislead — one question per topic cannot distinguish a gap from bad luck, so treat any topic with fewer than a handful of data points as "unknown", not "fine". Second, remember that many certification exams (AWS documents this explicitly) include unscored pilot questions and use scaled scoring, so your felt performance and your raw practice percentages are both imperfect instruments. Use them for direction, not decimal-point precision.

Suppose you are three weeks out from the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam. A blind 65-question practice test gives you a decent overall score, so you feel fine. Then you run the objectives audit and find you rated every billing-and-pricing line item a "2" — you recognise the terms but could not explain when one support plan beats another. Your guess-tracking confirms it: four billing questions marked "unsure", two of them right by elimination. The overall score hid a concentrated gap. That is the pattern to expect: aggregate numbers reassure, while objective-level diagnosis tells the truth.

You are done diagnosing when you can write, on one page: every exam objective, a 1–3 confidence rating for each, the evidence behind that rating (test data, audit, or self-explanation), and a short ranked list of the gaps that combine high exam weight with low confidence. That page is the input to your revision plan — and the moment to switch from diagnosing to fixing. Re-run a light version of the same analysis after each study block; gaps close, new ones surface, and the map only stays accurate if you keep testing it.
Early enough to act on it — a diagnosis you cannot respond to is just anxiety. Run a full analysis at least a few weeks out, then lighter re-checks as you close gaps. The separate question of when to take your final mock is covered in when to stop taking practice tests.
Partially. The objectives audit and self-explanation work with no question bank at all, and some providers offer free official material — Microsoft, for example, publishes a free Practice Assessment for its Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) exam. But blind testing samples topics you would not choose to test, which is exactly where blind spots live.
