How to Analyze Your Mock Exam Results

A step-by-step workflow for reviewing a full-length mock: categorise every miss, map errors to exam objectives, and read pacing and score data correctly.

You scored 68%. Is that a coverage problem, a careless-mistake problem, or a clock problem? The percentage alone cannot say — and that is why two candidates with identical mock scores can be in completely different positions. One is missing an entire domain; the other knows the material cold but loses fifteen questions to rushing. The same "68%" prescribes opposite remedies.

Analysing a mock exam means taking the score apart until it names its causes. Done properly, the analysis session is worth more than the mock itself: the sitting generates data, the review turns it into learning. Plan for the review to take at least as long as the exam did — a 90-minute mock deserves a 90-minute-plus autopsy. Here is the workflow.

Step 1: Capture the raw data before it goes stale

Do the review within a day or two of the sitting, while you still remember why you picked each answer — that reasoning is the most perishable and most valuable evidence you have. From your platform's results screen, capture four things:

  • your overall score and the per-domain breakdown;
  • every question you got wrong;
  • every question you got right but flagged, guessed, or hesitated on;
  • any timing data available — time per question or per section, and whether you finished.

That third item is the one most people skip. A lucky guess that landed is a gap wearing a disguise, and it will not be lucky twice. Treat "correct but unsure" as a miss for analysis purposes.

Step 2: Put every miss into one of four categories

Go through each wrong (and lucky-right) answer and ask: why did I miss this? Nearly every miss falls into one of four bins.

Knowledge gap

You did not know the fact, concept or procedure. You could not have answered this correctly with unlimited time. These are the cleanest misses — the remedy is study.

Misread

You knew the material but answered a different question from the one asked: skimmed past a "NOT", ignored a qualifier like "most cost-effective" or "first step", or missed a detail in the scenario. The knowledge was there; the reading was not.

Reasoning error

You understood the question and knew the underlying material, but connected them wrongly — eliminated the right option, confused two similar concepts under pressure, or applied a rule to a case it does not cover. These sit between knowledge and technique, and they cluster around concept pairs the exam deliberately puts side by side.

Time pressure

You would have got it right with two more minutes: rushed at the end, or skipped it entirely as the clock ran down. If your last ten questions show a spike of misses, you are looking at a pacing problem, not a knowledge problem.

Tally the four bins. The distribution is your diagnosis: a knowledge-heavy tally sends you back to the study materials; a misread-heavy one calls for slower question reading and keyword underlining; reasoning errors call for comparing confusable concepts explicitly; a time-pressure cluster calls for pacing work with timed sections. Step 3: Map the misses to the official exam objectives

Categories tell you how you miss; the objectives map tells you where. Every serious certification publishes an exam guide or objectives document listing its domains — for example, AWS's Cloud Practitioner exam guide and CompTIA's Security+ objectives both break the exam into weighted domains. That document, not your course's chapter list, is the authoritative map of what the exam tests.

For each miss, note which objective it belongs to. Then look at the pattern:

  • Clustered misses — six wrong answers all under one domain — mean a localised gap. This is good news: localised gaps are the fastest to close.
  • Scattered misses — one or two per domain — with a misread/reasoning-heavy tally usually mean technique, not coverage.
  • An untouched objective — a topic the mock barely sampled — means no data. Do not mark it "fine"; mark it "untested" and quiz it directly next time.

Weight matters too: a weak domain worth a large slice of the exam outranks a slightly weaker domain worth a small one. And remember that many exams (AWS states this explicitly in its guides) score compensatorily — you pass on the overall score, not per domain — so the objective map guides your study priorities rather than setting per-domain pass bars.

Step 4: Read the score itself with the right calibration

Two mechanics distort naive score-reading, and both are worth knowing.

First, scaled scores are not percentages. Real exams report results on scales such as 100–1,000 (AWS) or 100–900 (CompTIA), equated across different exam forms so that a slightly harder form does not disadvantage you. A passing score of 700/1,000 does not mean 70% of questions correct, so do not translate your mock percentage into a real-exam score with simple arithmetic.

Second, some real-exam questions do not count. AWS's exam guides state that 15 of the 65 questions on its Cloud Practitioner and Solutions Architect – Associate exams are unscored pilot items, unidentified during the exam. This is one documented reason a candidate's felt performance — and even a well-built mock score — can diverge from a real result.

The practical upshot: read your mock score as a fresh-questions percentage with an error bar, compare it against a target that includes a safety margin, and judge readiness on the trend across mocks rather than any single number. Step 5: Review the questions you got right

A complete analysis spends a few minutes on the correct answers too — three kinds in particular:

  1. Guesses that landed. Already covered: file them as gaps.
  2. Right answer, wrong reason. Read the official explanation even when you scored the point. If your reasoning does not match it, you have found a misconception that happened to be harmless this time.
  3. Slow rights. Questions that ate four minutes each are pacing debts even when correct. Note the topics; fluency there needs building.

Step 6: End the session with three written outputs

An analysis that lives only in your head evaporates by the weekend. Close every review by writing down:

  • The tally — misses per category and per domain, dated, next to the score.
  • The top three findings — specific and actionable: "confusing the two storage classes", "lost 8 questions to the final 15 minutes", "domain 4 untested".
  • The next actions — what the days before your next mock will target, in priority order.

Where analysis goes wrong

  • Reviewing only the score. Sixty seconds of looking at a percentage is not analysis. The score is the least informative line on the report.
  • Rereading explanations passively. Nodding along to the correct answer feels like learning but is recognition, not recall — the same trap as rereading textbooks. Close the explanation and reproduce the reasoning yourself before moving on.
  • Treating every miss as a knowledge gap. Candidates who default to "study more" after every mock never fix misreads or pacing, because those are not knowledge problems.
  • Blaming every miss on "silly mistakes". The opposite comfort. If the same "silly" mistake appears on three mocks, it is a pattern with a cause, and it will appear on the real exam too.
  • Analysing a stale mock. A review two weeks after the sitting works from a score report but not from memory of your reasoning — and reasoning is where misreads and reasoning errors are diagnosed.

Frequently asked questions

How long should mock exam analysis take?

At minimum, as long as the mock itself; 1.5–2× is common for a thorough pass on a 65–90-question exam. If your review reliably takes fifteen minutes, you are reading results, not analysing them.

Should I retake the same mock after analysing it?

Not soon. An immediate retake mostly measures your memory of that question set. Apply the findings, take a different form next, and return to an old form only after enough weeks that the questions test knowledge rather than recollection.

What if my platform gives no domain breakdown?

Build it yourself: as you review, tag each question with its objective using the provider's published exam guide. It adds ten minutes and is usually the most valuable ten minutes of the session.

My mock score dropped from the previous one. Does that undo my progress?

Not by itself. Different question draws, a harder form, or a bad day all move single scores; unscored-item effects do the same on real exams. Run the same analysis — if the misses are new topics rather than regressions, coverage variance, not lost knowledge, is the likely story.
