Plan your CompTIA A+ Core 2 (220-1202) prep in three phases — operating systems, security and troubleshooting — with a readiness checklist before booking.

Core 2 is the software half of CompTIA A+, and it rewards a different kind of preparation from its hardware-focused sibling. Where Core 1 is learned with a screwdriver, Core 2 — operating systems, security fundamentals, software troubleshooting and operational procedures — is learned at the keyboard, inside settings panels, command lines and security menus. The plan below is organised into three phases by subject weight rather than a rigid calendar, because most Core 2 candidates are fitting study around work or around fresh memories of Core 1, and phases flex better than fixed weeks.

You are most likely here in one of two situations: you have just passed Core 1 and want to finish the credential, or you have booked both exams and are planning the pair. Either way the version rule matters: the current Core 2 exam is 220-1202 (the 220-1102 English exam retired in September 2025), and your two passes must come from the same version series — a 220-1101 Core 1 pass cannot be paired with a 220-1202 Core 2 pass. Check which series your Core 1 belongs to before booking anything. Know the exam before you plan the study

The 220-1202 exam runs to a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes, mixing single- and multiple-response multiple choice, drag-and-drop, and performance-based questions. Two numbers deserve attention:

  • The passing score is 700 (on the 100–900 scale) — higher than Core 1's 675. Candidates who scraped through Core 1 and assume the same margin will carry them again are working with the wrong target.
  • The fee is $274 in US retail terms, as listed by CompTIA's authorised resellers in June 2026 — the same per-exam price as Core 1, with regional variation and authorised-reseller vouchers commonly around $238.

The scope of the exam is defined by the official 220-1202 objectives, downloadable free from comptia.org. Download them before you open any course or book, for two reasons: they are the contract for what can be asked, and the 2025 version refresh (V15) folded in more scripting basics, cloud and remote-troubleshooting content — so materials written for 220-1102 need checking against the current list before you trust them.

Phase one: operating systems (roughly the first half of your prep)

Operating systems are the heart of Core 2, and Windows is the heart of the operating systems content. Phase one earns the largest share of your study time — around half of it, whatever total timeline you choose.

Work through, in this order:

  1. Windows editions, installation and upgrade paths — what distinguishes the editions and which features belong to which.
  2. Windows configuration tools — Settings, Control Panel, Task Manager, Device Manager, Disk Management, and the administrative tools. Open each one as you study it; every tool you have personally clicked through is a question you can answer from memory rather than revision.
  3. The command line — the file-system, disk and network commands in the objectives. Type them, don't just read them.
  4. Other operating systems — the macOS, Linux, Chrome OS and mobile OS content, which is shallower than the Windows material but reliably examined.

The single best study habit for this phase is doing real tasks on a real system. Create user accounts and set their permissions. Partition a spare drive. Configure a firewall rule. If you built a virtual machine during Core 1 prep, it now becomes your Core 2 laboratory: snapshot it, break it, fix it, roll it back. Phase two: security fundamentals (the next quarter)

Core 2 carries A+'s security content: malware types and removal, social-engineering threats, authentication methods, permissions, encryption basics, and securing workstations, mobile devices and small networks. The V15 revision also strengthened IoT-security coverage, so give connected-device hardening real attention rather than treating it as a footnote.

Two study techniques fit this material:

  • Learn threats as pairs with their mitigations. Exam questions rarely ask "what is phishing?"; they describe a scenario and ask what happened or what prevents it next time. For every threat in the objectives, be able to name its telltale signs and its countermeasure.
  • Rehearse the malware-removal sequence as a procedure. Ordered-steps material is prime drag-and-drop territory, and knowing the steps in order is the difference between full and partial credit.

A realistic scenario to test yourself against: a user reports their browser home page has changed, pop-ups appear constantly, and the machine has slowed down. Can you narrate the full response — identify the likely infection type, quarantine, remediate, schedule scans, educate the user — in the methodical order the objectives describe? If yes, this phase is landing.

Phase three: software troubleshooting, operational procedures and scripting (the final quarter)

The remaining content splits into two clusters.

Software troubleshooting applies phases one and two under symptoms: Windows boot failures, application crashes, mobile OS issues, and malware-infection response. Study these as decision trees — symptom, probable causes, ordered diagnostic steps — because that is how the exam frames them, especially in performance-based questions.

Operational procedures is the content candidates most often skip and then regret: documentation, ticketing, change management, backup types and schedules, safety and environmental controls, privacy and licensing concepts, communication and professionalism. None of it is hard; all of it is easily-dropped marks if unstudied. It also includes the scripting basics the current version emphasises — recognising script file types and reading simple script logic, not writing production code. Budget a focused block for this cluster and it repays a disproportionate number of marks.

The final stretch: testing your way to a booking decision

However long your phases took, the last stage is the same: stop learning, start measuring. Move through three levels of question practice:

  1. Untimed, per-domain questions at the end of each phase, reviewing every explanation — including for questions you got right. Readiness checklist before you book

Book the 220-1202 exam when you can honestly tick all of these:

  • I can navigate to any Windows tool named in the objectives without hunting.
  • I can explain the major command-line tools in the objectives and what their common switches do.
  • I can name the mitigation for every threat type listed in the objectives.
  • I can recite the malware-removal and troubleshooting methodologies in order.
  • I have covered operational procedures deliberately, not incidentally.
  • My timed full-length simulations finish inside 90 minutes with a consistent, comfortable margin — judged against fresh questions, not familiar ones.

If one box stays unticked, that is your restudy target — a far cheaper discovery now than in the exam room. After the pass: what Core 2 completes

Passing Core 2 alongside Core 1 awards the CompTIA A+ credential — the exam code never appears in the certification name. It is valid for three years from your certification date, renewable through CompTIA's Continuing Education programme: 20 continuing-education units, a CertMaster CE course, or passing a higher-level CompTIA exam, which renews A+ automatically.

That last option is worth planning around, because for most people Core 2 is not an endpoint but the moment the credential starts working: applications for help desk and desktop support roles, and a decision about which specialism to build towards next. Frequently asked questions

Should I take Core 2 immediately after Core 1?

As soon as is practical, yes. The exams share a version series, your study routine is already established, and Core 1's networking knowledge feeds Core 2's troubleshooting scenarios. A gap of weeks is helpful for rest; a gap of many months usually means relearning habits — and risks your Core 1 version series approaching retirement before you complete the pair.

Is Core 2 harder than Core 1?

They are difficult in different ways: Core 2 demands a higher passing score (700 against 675) and more memorised procedure, while Core 1 punishes weak hands-on hardware knowledge. Candidates from desktop-support backgrounds often find Core 2 more natural; self-taught hardware enthusiasts often find it harder than expected, mostly because of the operational-procedures and security content.

Can I use 220-1102 study materials for the 220-1202 exam?

As a supplement, cautiously. The fundamentals overlap substantially, but the current version added scripting, cloud, IoT-security and remote-troubleshooting emphasis that older materials underweight. Reconcile any 1102-era resource against the official 220-1202 objectives and fill the gaps from current sources.

Do I need to schedule the two exams in a particular order?

No — CompTIA lets you sit Core 1 and Core 2 in any order, on any dates, provided both passes come from the same version series. Core 1 first is the common route, but a candidate stronger in software than hardware can reasonably reverse it.
