Short answer: CompTIA A+ is moderately difficult — harder than its "entry-level" label suggests, but very passable with structured preparation. The challenge is breadth, not depth: you must clear two separate exams (Core 1 and Core 2) covering hardware, networking, mobile devices, operating systems, security and troubleshooting, and the performance-based questions punish anyone who has only read about IT rather than done it.
That single paragraph is the honest verdict. The rest of this article earns it: what the exam format actually demands, whether Core 1 or Core 2 is the harder paper, and — most usefully — the specific reasons candidates fail, so you can avoid being one of them.
CompTIA A+ is unusual among beginner certifications because it is not one exam. To earn the credential you must pass two: Core 1 and Core 2. As of 2026 the current versions are 220-1201 (Core 1) and 220-1202 (Core 2), both launched in March 2025. The previous 220-1101/220-1102 pair was retired for English-language candidates in September 2025, so make sure any study material you buy targets the 1201/1202 objectives.
Two rules matter here. You can sit the exams in either order and on different days, but both passes must come from the same version — you cannot mix a 1101 pass with a 1202 pass. And each exam is scored independently, so a strong Core 1 result does nothing to cushion a weak Core 2 attempt.
Practically, this means A+ difficulty is really the sum of two separate challenges. Plenty of candidates who would comfortably pass a single mixed exam stumble because they treat the second core as an afterthought after passing the first. Each paper deserves its own preparation cycle. Each A+ exam gives you up to 90 questions in 90 minutes. That "up to" matters: CompTIA states question counts as maximums, and papers include unscored seeded questions, so you may see fewer than 90. Either way, you are averaging roughly a minute per question — comfortable for straightforward multiple choice, tight once the harder formats appear.
Those formats are:
PBQs usually arrive at the start of the exam, and they are the single biggest difficulty multiplier. A PBQ can absorb five to ten minutes if you dither. Experienced candidates either work them briskly or flag them, clear the multiple choice, and return with the remaining time. Candidates who fail on timing almost always lost the exam in the first twenty minutes.
Scoring adds a subtlety many first-timers miss. A+ uses a scaled score from 100 to 900, and the two cores have different passing marks: 675 for Core 1 and 700 for Core 2. These are scaled values, not percentages — you cannot translate 675 into "67.5% correct". CompTIA does not publish pass rates for A+ or any of its exams, so treat any "official A+ pass rate" you see quoted online with suspicion; no such figure exists.

Core 1 (220-1201) is the hardware and infrastructure paper: mobile devices, networking fundamentals, hardware components, virtualisation and cloud concepts, and hardware troubleshooting. Its difficulty is memorisation-heavy — cable types, connector standards, wireless standards, laser-printing stages. People who have built or repaired computers find much of it familiar; people coming from a non-technical background face a wall of vocabulary with few anchors.
Core 2 (220-1202) covers operating systems, security, software troubleshooting and operational procedures. It feels more conceptual: Windows administration, malware removal steps, security controls, scripting basics and professional procedures such as change management and documentation. Candidates with helpdesk experience often find Core 2 intuitive, while self-taught hardware enthusiasts frequently rate it the harder of the two — the operational-procedures content in particular tests workplace practice they have never seen.
The current V15 version also leans further into cloud, virtualisation, IoT security and remote troubleshooting than older versions did, which nudges both papers away from pure "identify this part" recall and towards applied judgement. Note that whichever version you pass, the credential you earn is simply "CompTIA A+" — the exam code never appears on the certification itself.

Yes — but not prohibitively. CompTIA recommends around 12 months of hands-on experience in an IT support role before attempting A+, yet there is no enforced prerequisite, and beginners pass it regularly.
Consider a realistic case: a retail supervisor moving into IT with no professional experience but a habit of fixing family laptops. Core 1 will feel half-familiar — they have handled RAM, storage drives and Wi-Fi settings — but the networking theory and enterprise hardware content will be new. Core 2 will be the bigger stretch: they have used Windows for years but never administered it, and concepts like security policies or ticketing procedures are workplace knowledge they simply haven't acquired. For this person, A+ is genuinely challenging; the gap is closed with deliberate hands-on practice (spare machines, virtual machines, guided labs), not extra reading.
Contrast that with a helpdesk analyst eighteen months into their first job. Most of both cores describes their daily work; their risk is complacency on the memorisation-heavy corners (display standards, cable specifications) that never come up on shift.
Two practical safety nets soften the difficulty for everyone. First, CompTIA's retake policy allows an immediate second attempt with no waiting period (a 14-day wait applies from the third attempt onwards) — though each attempt needs a new full-price voucher, and at a US retail price of $274 per exam as listed by CompTIA's authorized resellers in June 2026 (prices vary by country), failing is an expensive habit. Within CompTIA's lineup, A+ is the gentlest of the core technical certifications but not the easiest exam CompTIA sells — Tech+ sits below it as a true pre-career option.
