Two practice platforms can both advertise "thousands of questions, timed mode, detailed explanations" and still deliver completely different preparation experiences. Feature lists converge; what actually varies is depth — how well each platform covers your exam, how faithfully its simulation mirrors real conditions, and how much its analytics tell you about what to study next. So the way to compare platforms is not to line up their marketing pages. It is to score them against a fixed set of criteria, weighted for your situation, using each platform's own free tier as the evidence.
This article gives you that framework: six comparison criteria, a worksheet for scoring them, and guidance on which criteria deserve extra weight depending on where you are in your preparation. A platform's total catalogue size is irrelevant if your exam is missing, thin, or stale. Check three things for each shortlisted platform: your exact exam appears by its current code (for instance SY0-701 for Security+, CLF-C02 for AWS Cloud Practitioner, 220-1201/1202 for A+); the question set is organised by the official objective domains; and the platform indicates which version its content tracks. Certification bodies refresh exams on multi-year cycles — CompTIA notes retirements usually come about three years after launch — so version tracking is the difference between practising the right material and the previous exam's material.
Catalogue breadth does matter in one case: if you plan to sit several certifications, a platform covering all of them under one subscription beats juggling accounts. Small pools inflate your scores through recognition, which is the memorisation trap. Freshness matters equally: an actively maintained bank that names its exam version beats a larger archive that does not.
Platforms typically sell some mix of monthly subscriptions, fixed-length access passes, per-exam purchases and bundles. The right model depends on your timeline and how many exams you will sit. A candidate four weeks from one exam wants the shortest adequate access window; a candidate working through a certification path over a year wants an all-catalogue subscription. Compare total cost over your realistic preparation period, not headline monthly price — and check the unglamorous details: auto-renewal terms, refund policy, and whether "full access" excludes the exam you need.

Two practical rules make the worksheet honest. First, score only from evidence you gathered yourself — free samples, trial quizzes, documented features — never from testimonials or unverifiable claims (any platform advertising "real exam questions" or pass guarantees should be struck from the shortlist entirely, not scored). Second, coverage and quality are gate criteria: a platform scoring below 3 on either loses regardless of its total, because no analytics dashboard compensates for wrong-version content.
Four weeks or less from exam day. Raise simulation fidelity to ×3. Your remaining preparation is dominated by timed rehearsal and pacing, so the platform that best reproduces exam conditions wins even if its analytics are plainer.

Retaking after a fail. Weight analytics ×3 and pool size ×3. You need granular diagnosis of what went wrong and enough fresh questions that improvement is real rather than remembered.
Consider a network engineer three months from Security+ SY0-701, comparing two platforms. Platform A has a huge multi-provider catalogue, timed mode, but terse one-line explanations and no domain breakdown. Platform B covers fewer certifications but explains every option, reports scores against the official Security+ domains, and lets her rebuild quizzes from missed questions. Using the early-preparation weights, B wins comfortably on quality (×4) and analytics (×3) even though A scores higher on coverage — and because she is sitting only one exam, A's catalogue advantage carries little weight. If she were instead planning A+, Network+ and Security+ across a year, the same worksheet with path weights could flip the result.
