How to Combine Documentation, Courses and Practice Tests

A practical workflow for sequencing video courses, official documentation and practice tests so your resources reinforce each other instead of competing.

A candidate with a video course, a documentation bookmark folder and a bank of practice questions often studies worse than a candidate with just one of the three. Not because the resources are bad, but because they get used in parallel rather than in sequence: half a course here, a random documentation page there, a practice test taken too early and abandoned in frustration. The fix is not more material. It is a workflow that gives each resource one job and a defined position in the plan.

Short answer: use the course to build the map, documentation to add depth exactly where the course is shallow or the practice tests expose gaps, and practice tests as the feedback loop that decides what you study next. Course first, documentation on demand, practice questions early and often — but full timed simulations only near the end.

Why each resource type exists

The three resource types are not interchangeable formats of the same content. They do different cognitive work, and the workflow below only makes sense once you see the division of labour.

Courses compress and sequence. A good instructor has already decided what order the topics should come in, what can be skipped, and which concepts need an analogy before they need a definition. That curation is what you are paying for. What a course cannot do is match the exact current state of the technology or the exam — recorded material ages.

Documentation is authoritative and current, but unsequenced. Vendor documentation reflects the product as it ships today and is written by the people who build it. It is the place to resolve any conflict between your course and reality. Its weakness is that it is organised for practitioners looking things up, not for learners progressing through a syllabus. Practice tests measure and strengthen. Research on the testing effect — notably Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 work in Psychological Science — found that practising retrieval produces better long-term retention than restudying the same material. A practice question is therefore doing two jobs at once: telling you what you do not know, and reinforcing what you do. Practice questions are study aids that test your understanding of the exam objectives; they are not a shortcut around learning the material, and memorising answers defeats both of their jobs.

The layered workflow, phase by phase

Treat your preparation as four overlapping phases rather than three separate resources. The percentages below describe roughly how your study time splits in each phase, not a rigid schedule.

Phase 1 — Orientation: course in the lead

Start with the course, watched broadly rather than deeply. Your goal in the first pass is a complete map of the exam's territory: what the domains are, which topics are large, and where your existing experience already covers you. Take light notes, do not pause to master every demo, and resist the urge to open documentation for every unfamiliar term — write the term down and keep moving.

One exception: pull up the official exam objectives before you press play on lesson one, and keep them beside the course as a checklist. Courses sometimes skip objectives or linger on instructor favourites, and you want to notice that in week one, not week six. During this phase, a small dose of practice questions is already useful — a handful of untimed questions per domain as you finish it. Expect to get many wrong. The point is calibration, not scoring. Free sample questions are enough at this stage; there is no reason to burn a full-length simulation on a syllabus you are half-way through.

Phase 2 — Deepening: documentation takes over

Once the course has given you the map, invert the ratio. The course becomes a reference you revisit for specific lessons; documentation becomes your primary reading. Work domain by domain, and for each topic ask one question: did the course give me enough depth to answer an unfamiliar question about this, or just enough to follow along? Wherever the honest answer is "just enough to follow along", that topic gets a documentation session.

Two practical rules keep this phase from sprawling:

  1. Documentation reading is always triggered, never browsed. You open a documentation page because a course section felt thin, an objective is not covered anywhere else, or a practice question exposed a hole. You do not open the documentation homepage and start reading.
  2. Every documentation session ends in your own words. A summary paragraph, a few flashcards, a diagram — anything that forces retrieval later. Reading without capture is the low-utility end of study techniques; Dunlosky and colleagues' 2013 review in Psychological Science in the Public Interest rates rereading among the least effective methods and practice testing among the most effective.

Keep the question drip running throughout: short, untimed sets on the domain you just deepened, reviewed immediately. When a question surprises you, that is the trigger for your next documentation session — the loop is course-map, documentation-depth, question-check, repeat.

Phase 3 — Feedback: practice tests set the agenda

Somewhere past the two-thirds mark of your content coverage, the hierarchy flips again. Now practice results, not the course syllabus, decide what you study each week. Take a full-length, timed practice test under realistic conditions, then spend the following sessions working the weakest domains it reveals — back in the documentation for depth, back in specific course lessons for re-explanation.

Read results at the domain level, not the question level. Missing one question on a topic can be noise; missing most of a domain is signal. Then, for the questions you got wrong, classify the cause: a knowledge gap (you never learnt it), a fluency gap (you knew it but too slowly), or a reading error (you knew it and answered a different question than the one asked). Knowledge gaps send you to documentation. Fluency gaps send you to flashcards and repeated retrieval. Reading errors send you to slower, structured question-reading habits in your next timed set.

One caution that protects the whole system: never re-take the same question set to watch your score rise. You will be measuring memory of the answers, not readiness. Rotate question pools, and let a rising score on unseen questions be your evidence. A timed practice test simulation run this way, once every week or two in the final month, gives you an honest readiness trend.

Phase 4 — Consolidation: all three in miniature

In the final one to two weeks, all three resources shrink into review formats. The course contributes its summary or recap lessons at higher playback speed. Documentation contributes only the pages you bookmarked as personally troublesome — not general rereading. Practice tests contribute one or two final full simulations plus daily short retrieval sets from your own notes and cards. If a final simulation exposes a genuinely unknown topic, patch it with a targeted documentation session; if it exposes a broad weak domain this late, consider whether your booking date needs revisiting rather than cramming around it.

A worked example of the loop in action

A systems administrator preparing for a cloud associate-level exam finishes her course's networking section feeling comfortable. Her end-of-domain question set says otherwise: she misses several questions involving a service the course demonstrated only briefly. That evening's session is thirty minutes in the vendor's documentation for that service — concepts page, limits, one worked scenario — ending with six flashcards in her own words. Three days later, those cards come up in review; a week later, networking questions in her first full simulation land correctly. No part of that loop required new material, only the right resource responding to the right trigger.

Common ways the combination goes wrong

  • Serial completion. Finishing 100% of the course before touching a single question wastes the testing effect and delays feedback until it is expensive to act on.
  • Documentation as procrastination. Unbounded reading of well-written documentation feels productive while quietly avoiding the discomfort of being tested. Triggered reading with a written output is the antidote.
  • Simulations too early, too often. A full timed test on a half-covered syllabus produces a discouraging score and no usable signal. Save simulations for phase 3; use small untimed sets before that.
  • Score-chasing on repeated questions. Covered above, and worth repeating: a memorised bank certifies nothing.
  • Ignoring conflicts between resources. When your course and the documentation disagree, the documentation wins, and the discrepancy is worth a note — it usually marks something that changed recently, which is exactly the kind of detail worth knowing cold.

Fitting the workflow to your calendar

The four phases compress or stretch with your timeline: on a short runway phases 1 and 2 interleave tightly, while a long runway lets each breathe. How many weeks you give the whole arc, and how many hours each week can carry, are separate planning questions — see how many hours a week to study for a certification and how far in advance to start studying for benchmarks. Whatever the calendar, the sequencing logic holds: map first, depth on demand, feedback in charge at the end.

The one-page version

If you keep nothing else, keep this: each resource earns its place by answering a different question. The course answers "what is all this and in what order should I meet it?" The documentation answers "how does this actually work, in current, authoritative detail?" The practice test answers "what do I still not know, and can I perform under exam conditions?" Run them in that order of leadership — course, then documentation, then practice tests — while letting small doses of questions flow through every phase, and three resources become one system instead of three competing to-do lists.
