Certified Salesforce admin wondering what's next? Compare Platform Administrator II, App Builder, consultant and developer tracks by career goal.
Your second Salesforce certification is a career decision wearing an exam's clothing. Platform Administrator II makes you a better admin; Platform App Builder starts turning you into a product person; a consultant credential points you at implementation work; Platform Developer changes your job title entirely. All four cost the same US$200 (plus tax, with a $100 retake), so price won't decide for you — your three-year career goal has to.
Short answer: if you want to stay in-house and go deeper, take Platform Administrator II. If you enjoy building with clicks and want the widest options later, take Platform App Builder — it's the most popular second cert for good reason. If you're aiming at consultancy work, take Agentforce Sales or Service Consultant for your specialism. If you're drifting towards code, skip the admin ladder and take Platform Developer.
One housekeeping note before the routes. Salesforce renamed 35 certifications in July 2025 when exam delivery moved to Trailhead Academy: your "Salesforce Certified Administrator" is now officially Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator, and "Advanced Administrator" is now Platform Administrator II. Nothing needed re-earning — names updated automatically — but knowing the new names matters when you read exam guides, and this article uses them throughout.

The former Advanced Administrator exam is the straight-line choice: 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions in 105 minutes, passing at 65%, and it's the one option here that formally requires your Platform Administrator certification. The outline rewards exactly the muscles a second-year admin is building: Security and Access (20%), Process Automation (20%), Objects and Applications (19%), plus data management, cloud applications, auditing and environment management.
Choose this route if your goal is to be the unambiguous platform authority in a growing org — the person trusted with sharing-model redesigns and deployment strategy. For US pay context, Salesforce Ben's State of Salesforce Salaries survey (published August 2026, 2,316 respondents) reports median admin salaries of $78,000 junior, $92,000 mid and $109,000 senior; certifications correlate with seniority rather than guaranteeing it, and pay varies widely by location and experience.
Its limitation: it makes you more of what you already are. If you suspect your future lies outside pure administration, one of the other routes buys more optionality for the same $200.
Platform App Builder tests whether you can design and ship declarative applications — data modelling (22%), business logic and process automation (28%), Salesforce fundamentals (23%), user interface and deployment. Same format economics: 60 questions plus up to five unscored, 105 minutes, passing at 63%, no prerequisites.

The content overlap with what you passed already is real, so momentum is on your side: many admins can close the gap with a few weeks of focused study on data modelling and automation scenarios. When you get there, timed Platform App Builder practice questions will tell you whether business logic or deployment is the domain that still needs work before you book.
Consultant certifications are for people who want to implement Salesforce for many businesses rather than administer it for one — usually at a partner or as an independent. Note the July 2026 rebrand: Sales Cloud Consultant is now Agentforce Sales Consultant and Service Cloud Consultant is now Agentforce Service Consultant (name-only changes; existing holders kept their credentials). Both require your Platform Administrator certification, both are 60-question, 105-minute exams at US$200, and both are heavily scenario-based; third-party guides put passing scores in the high 60s, though Salesforce doesn't confirm exact figures.
Pick by the org you know: if your admin work centres on pipeline, forecasting and the sales lifecycle, take the Sales consultant exam; if it centres on cases, service channels and contact-centre work, take Service. Experience Cloud Consultant (also admin-gated) is the niche third option where portals and communities are your world.
Salesforce Ben's 2026 survey reports US median salaries for functional consultants at $75,000 junior, $109,500 mid and $126,000 senior — again, survey medians, not promises. Two adjacent credentials worth a sentence each: Certified Business Analyst (60 questions, 105 minutes, passing at 72%, no prerequisites since May 2023) suits consultants who gravitate to discovery and requirements; Data 360 Consultant (renamed from Data Cloud Consultant in March 2026) positions you for data-platform projects, though several of its details, including the passing score, aren't officially confirmed — check the Trailhead credential page. If you keep pushing Flow past its limits and enjoying it, take the hint. Platform Developer (the "I" was dropped from Platform Developer I in the 2025 renaming) has no prerequisites — no degree, no coding credential — and its outline is 27% developer fundamentals (now including Agentforce capabilities), 28% process automation and logic, 25% user interface (Lightning Web Components and Visualforce) and 20% testing, debugging and deployment. It passes at 68%, and it's the prerequisite for Platform Developer II (a 120-minute exam passing at 70% — and note the old superbadge path is gone; PD2 is now a single proctored exam).
This is the route with the steepest learning curve from a declarative background — Apex and JavaScript are genuinely new skills — and the strongest reported payoff: Salesforce Ben's 2026 survey shows US developer medians of $94,500 junior, $120,000 mid and $140,000 senior. Like App Builder, Platform Developer is also an Application Architect component, so the Build and Code routes converge if you ride either far enough.
The Agentforce Specialist certification (formerly AI Specialist) is Salesforce's flagship AI credential: 60 questions, 105 minutes, US$200, no listed prerequisites, with reported topic areas centred on prompt engineering and Agentforce concepts. It's best treated as a complement to one of the four routes rather than a route itself — an admin-plus-Agentforce or consultant-plus-Agentforce profile is stronger than the AI cert alone, especially now the Administrator exam itself carries an 8% Agentforce domain. One caution: the free first attempt ended on 31 December 2025, so ignore older posts saying it costs nothing.
Whichever exam you pick, remember the maintenance treadmill you're already on: every Salesforce credential stays active through free seasonal Trailhead maintenance modules, and each new cert adds its own. Two certifications you maintain beat four that lapse.
Should I take Platform Administrator II or Platform App Builder first?
There's no required order — Admin II needs your admin cert, App Builder needs nothing. Take Admin II if you're staying in pure administration; take App Builder if you might ever move towards building, consulting or architecture.
Do consultant certifications require experience, or just the admin cert?
Formally, Agentforce Sales and Service Consultant require only the Platform Administrator certification. In practice their scenario-heavy questions reward real implementation exposure, so most candidates fare better after project work.
How much does a second Salesforce certification cost in total?

Can I go straight from Administrator to Technical Architect?
Not directly. The Certified Technical Architect review board (roughly US$6,000 in total) requires both the Application Architect and System Architect credentials first, each built from four component certifications — a multi-year, multi-exam journey.
The admins who get the most from a second certification pick it the way they'd pick a role, not a badge: Admin II to own a bigger org, App Builder to build, a consultant credential to advise, Platform Developer to code — with Agentforce Specialist layered on top of whichever identity you choose.
