CCNP Enterprise and CCNP Security are both professional-level Cisco certifications with the same structure — one core exam plus one concentration exam — but they certify different jobs. CCNP Enterprise, built around the 350-401 ENCOR core exam, validates the routing, switching, SD-WAN and automation skills of a network engineer. CCNP Security, built around the 350-701 SCOR core exam, validates the firewall, VPN, identity and secure-access skills of a network security engineer working on Cisco's security product line.
Short answer: choose CCNP Enterprise if you run or aspire to run enterprise networks — it is the broader credential, the natural step after CCNA, and the safer choice when you are not yet sure where you want to specialise. Choose CCNP Security if you already work with firewalls, VPNs or identity platforms day to day, or you have a confirmed route into a network security role. Neither track formally requires the other, and neither is universally "better" — they lead to different desks.
The rest of this article contrasts the two tracks on exam structure, content, difficulty, cost, job roles and market signals, then gives you a decision framework. It deliberately does not tell you how to study for either exam — for that, see the guide on how to prepare for CCNP Enterprise.
Structurally, the tracks mirror each other, which makes the comparison clean. Every CCNP certification since Cisco's February 2020 restructure consists of a 120-minute core exam (US $400) plus one 90-minute concentration exam (US $300) of your choice — roughly $700 minimum in exam fees, varying by country. There are no formal prerequisites for either track: you do not need CCNA first, although Cisco suggests three to five years of relevant experience. Both certifications are valid for three years and renew the same way — 80 Continuing Education credits, one professional core exam, two concentration exams, or a combination.
Passing either core exam on its own already earns you a Cisco Certified Specialist badge, and each core doubles as the qualifying exam for the corresponding CCIE lab: ENCOR qualifies you for CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure, SCOR for CCIE Security. So your choice of CCNP track quietly pre-selects your expert-level path too.
The core exam is 350-401 ENCOR (Implementing Cisco Enterprise Network Core Technologies). Its exam topics moved to version 1.2 on 19 March 2026: wireless content came out of the core (it now lives in the wireless concentrations and CCIE Enterprise Wireless), while SD-WAN, automation and AI-assisted operations gained emphasis. Concentration options include 300-410 ENARSI (advanced routing and services — widely regarded as the most popular pick), 300-415 ENSDWI (SD-WAN), 300-420 ENSLD (design), the wireless pair 300-425 ENWLSD and 300-430 ENWLSI, and 300-435 ENAUTO (automation). Cisco adjusts this roster over time, so confirm the live list on Cisco's CCNP Enterprise page before booking.
The core exam is 350-701 SCOR (Implementing and Operating Cisco Security Core Technologies). Concentration options have included 300-710 SNCF (Cisco Secure Firewall), 300-715 SISE (Identity Services Engine), 300-730 SVPN (VPNs), 300-735 SAUTO (security automation), 300-740 SCAZT (cloud access and zero trust) and — added in May 2025 — 300-745 SDSI (Designing Cisco Security Infrastructure). Email and web security concentrations have existed historically, but the underlying appliance products have been through end-of-sale changes, so check Cisco's current CCNP Security exam list rather than assuming every older concentration is still bookable.
One distinction worth stating plainly: CCNP Security is a network-security engineering track centred on Cisco security products. It is not the SOC-analyst path — that is Cisco's Cybersecurity track (formerly CyberOps), covered separately in our Cisco CyberOps certification guide.

On paper the tracks cost the same, take the same shape and renew identically. The real differences are in content, in who hires for each skill set, and in what you would be doing at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday three years from now.
ENCOR v1.2 covers the technologies that keep a large organisation's network running: enterprise architecture, virtualisation, infrastructure (routing and switching at depth), network assurance, security fundamentals as they apply to network devices, and automation. The concentration then lets you go deep in one direction — advanced routing with ENARSI, SD-WAN with ENSDWI, design with ENSLD, wireless, or automation. The result is a generalist-with-a-specialism profile: you can reason about an entire enterprise topology and you have provable depth in one slice of it.
Note that Enterprise is not security-free: ENCOR includes securing network infrastructure. The difference is emphasis. Enterprise treats security as one property of a well-run network; Security treats it as the entire job.
SCOR covers security concepts and the operation of Cisco's security portfolio: network security controls, VPN technologies, secure access and identity, content security, and cloud/endpoint protection themes. The concentrations map to specific product areas — Secure Firewall, ISE, VPNs, zero-trust access. This is hands-on product engineering, not policy or audit work: a CCNP Security holder is the person who designs and operates the firewall estate, builds the remote-access VPN, or rolls out identity-based network access.
Because SCOR assumes you can already read a network — routing, NAT, segmentation — most candidates arrive with networking experience or a CCNA-level foundation. Security engineering layered on shaky networking fundamentals is a painful combination, in the exam room and on the job.
Neither track publishes pass rates or question counts — Cisco does not release those figures for any professional-level exam, so treat any specific number you see elsewhere as a community estimate. Difficulty therefore comes down to fit.
CCNP Enterprise is hard through breadth: ENCOR spans many infrastructure domains, and candidates whose experience is concentrated in one area (say, campus switching) must build genuine competence in the others. CCNP Security is hard through stacked assumptions: the domain is narrower, but it presumes the networking underneath, so a candidate weak in routing and switching is effectively studying two disciplines at once.
As a rule of thumb from that framing: an experienced route/switch engineer usually finds Enterprise the more natural climb, while an engineer who has spent two years administering firewalls may find SCOR closer to their daily work than ENCOR would be. CCNP Enterprise maps to the core network engineering ladder: senior network engineer, infrastructure engineer, network consultant, and eventually architecture or CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure. Because nearly every mid-size and large organisation runs an enterprise network, the addressable job market is broad. CCNP Security maps to network security engineering: roles operating and designing firewall, VPN and identity infrastructure, often inside larger security teams or at partners and service providers that deploy Cisco security products. The market is narrower but the skills are scarcer, and security headcount tends to sit closer to budget priority in many organisations.
The only named, dated dataset worth quoting here is the Skillsoft IT Skills and Salary Survey (fielded May–September 2024, published 2025, US respondents, not adjusted for cost of living). It reports average US salaries of $144,912 for CCNP Enterprise holders and $168,159 for CCNP Security holders — but Skillsoft flags the CCNP Security figure as drawn from fewer than 100 responses, so read it as an indicative signal, not a promise. Pay varies enormously by location, employer, experience and the rest of your CV; no certification sets your salary on its own. Do not pick a track on a $23k gap in one survey — pick it on which work you want, and let compensation follow competence.
Work through these in order; most people have a clear answer by question three.
Scenario one: a network engineer with four years on an enterprise campus — OSPF, BGP at the edge, a growing SD-WAN deployment — wants a professional-level credential this year. Enterprise is the obvious call: ENCOR v1.2's SD-WAN and automation emphasis matches where her environment is heading, and ENARSI deepens the routing work she already does. If she later moves towards security, SCOR remains available with no penalty for sequencing.
Scenario two: an engineer at a managed services provider has spent three years deploying Cisco Secure Firewall and remote-access VPN for clients, with solid but not deep routing knowledge. For him, SCOR plus the SNCF concentration certifies exactly what clients pay his employer for, and the credential is legible to every security hiring manager who reads his CV. Taking Enterprise first would delay the certification that describes his actual job.
You can, and some senior engineers eventually do, because Cisco's renewal system makes stacking efficient: any professional-level exam or qualifying CE activity renews all your lower or equal active Cisco certifications within the three-year window, so a second track largely resets the clock on the first. But "eventually" is the operative word. Each track is a serious, multi-month commitment; pursuing both at once is a reliable way to pass neither. Certify the track that matches your current or imminent role, work in it, then add the second when your job genuinely spans both domains.
