Best Types of Resources for Certification Exam Preparation

Study guides, video courses, labs, flashcards, question banks and official docs compared — what each format actually teaches and who it suits best.

Ask ten certified professionals which resource type got them through their exam and you will get ten different answers — because "best" depends on what a format is being asked to do. Video courses excel at first exposure, study guides at structured coverage, labs at skill-building, question banks at diagnosis, and none of them substitutes for another. The honest answer to "which resource type is best?" is: best at what, and for whom?

This article compares the six main formats on learning value so you can judge which combination fits your situation. It does not rank specific products or vendors, and it does not tell you in what order to use what you pick — assembling a curated collection is covered in how to build a certification study library.

What does the research say about resource formats?

Before comparing formats one by one, it is worth knowing that learning science does discriminate between them. Dunlosky and colleagues' 2013 review in Psychological Science in the Public Interest rated practice testing and distributed (spaced) practice as the highest-utility learning techniques, while rereading and highlighting rated low. Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 experiments similarly found that practising recall produced better long-term retention than restudying the same material.

Translated into resource terms: formats that make you retrieve information (question banks, flashcards, labs) tend to produce more durable learning per hour than formats you passively consume (videos, reading). That does not make passive formats worthless — you cannot retrieve what you never learned — but it should shape how much of your time each format gets.

Study guides: the coverage backbone

A good study guide's defining virtue is completeness: it is written against the exam objectives and touches all of them in a deliberate sequence. Books also let you control pace — skim what you know, dwell on what you don't — in a way video makes awkward.

Their weakness is that reading feels productive while producing shallow retention on its own; this is exactly the "rereading" technique the Dunlosky review rates as low-utility. A guide works best paired with an active format that tests what you just read. Video courses: the fastest first pass

Video is unmatched for first exposure. A demonstrated configuration, an animated protocol handshake, or an instructor narrating a console walkthrough builds an intuition that flat text struggles to deliver. Video also lowers the activation energy of studying — pressing play is easier than opening chapter seven.

The trade-off is that video is the most passive format of all. It is entirely possible to "complete" a 20-hour course with very little retained, because nothing forced retrieval along the way. Video is also hard to reference later: finding one fact again means scrubbing a timeline instead of checking an index.

Suits: newcomers to a topic; visual learners; candidates who struggle to start sessions.

Official documentation: the accuracy ceiling

Vendor documentation — product docs, whitepapers, service FAQs — is the only format in this list written by the organisation that also writes the exam's subject matter. It is authoritative, current, and usually free. It is also unstructured for exam purposes: nothing in a documentation site tells you which 5% of it the exam cares about.

Use documentation as a depth layer, not a syllabus. When a guide or video leaves a concept fuzzy, the documentation is where the fuzziness ends. For fundamentals-level exams some providers go further and publish exam-specific freebies — Microsoft's AZ-900 page, for example, links a free official Practice Assessment and an exam sandbox — always worth claiming before spending money.

Suits: candidates with some experience; anyone chasing genuine understanding rather than minimum-pass coverage.

Hands-on labs: where performance-based questions are won

Several major exams include performance-based or interactive items — CompTIA's A+ and Security+ exams both mix performance-based questions in with multiple choice. No amount of reading prepares you to actually complete a task under time pressure; only doing it does. Labs (home labs, cloud free tiers, simulators) are how "I've read about it" becomes "I've done it".

Labs are the most time-expensive format per objective covered, so they cannot be your only resource for a broad exam. But hours spent in a lab pay twice: on exam day and in the job the certification is for.

Suits: candidates for hands-on technical exams; career changers who need demonstrable skill, not just a credential.

Flashcards: small format, precise job

Flashcards apply retrieval practice — the well-evidenced testing effect — to atomic facts: definitions, acronyms, port numbers, command syntax. They are cheap, mobile, and perfectly suited to spaced repetition, which the spacing-effect literature (Cepeda et al., 2006) shows reliably outperforms cramming.

Their limit is granularity. Flashcards cannot teach you to reason through a scenario question; they can only make sure the facts your reasoning depends on are instantly available. Making your own deck adds a second benefit: writing a card is itself a processing exercise.

Suits: every candidate, for the memorisation slice of the syllabus; commuters and gap-time studiers.

Practice questions and tests: the measurement layer

Practice questions do two evidence-backed jobs at once: they are retrieval practice, and they measure it. A scored set of questions tells you which domains are weak, whether your pacing survives a timed run, and how the exam's question style actually reads. Analysing why each wrong answer was wrong is where most of the value lives — a practice test you never review is half wasted.

Two cautions. First, questions test understanding of exam objectives; they are not a substitute for learning the material, and memorising answers to specific items defeats the purpose entirely. There is no universal winner, but there are sensible pairings by circumstance:

  • Complete beginner, theory-heavy exam: video course for exposure + study guide for coverage + flashcards + practice questions.

Whatever the mix, the research points one direction: keep at least a third of your study time in active formats. Passive consumption builds familiarity; retrieval builds the recall that exam day actually tests.

Frequently asked questions

Is a video course or a book better for certification prep?

Neither is better outright. Video delivers faster, more engaging first exposure; a book gives completeness, searchability and self-paced review. Many candidates use video for the first pass and a guide for the second. Whichever you choose, pair it with an active format, because both are passive on their own.

Are free resource types worse than paid ones?

The format's learning value is independent of its price — official documentation is free and is also the most authoritative text available. What varies with price is usually packaging, structure and support. Judge each item on currency and blueprint coverage, not cost.

Can I prepare with practice questions alone?

For most candidates, no. Questions measure and reinforce knowledge but teach it inefficiently and incompletely — and leaning on them alone pushes you towards memorising answers rather than understanding objectives. Use them alongside at least one teaching-oriented format.
