If you have no database credentials yet, the strongest first choices in 2026 are the Oracle Database SQL Certified Associate (exam 1Z0-071) if you want the most widely recognised proof of SQL skill, and the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Foundations Associate if you want a genuinely free starting point. MySQL, Microsoft Azure and PostgreSQL credentials all have a place too — but they suit specific situations rather than everyone.

This article ranks entry-level options only: certifications a motivated newcomer can realistically earn without prior credentials or years of production experience. If you want a map of the entire certification landscape by vendor and specialism, that lives in our overview of database certifications explained; advanced administration tracks are ranked separately in our guide to the best database administrator certifications.

What makes a database certification beginner-friendly?

Before ranking anything, it helps to be clear about the criteria. A good first certification has four properties:

  1. No enforced prerequisites. You can register and sit the exam without holding another credential first.
  2. Skills you can build at home. Everything tested should be practicable on a free database install or a free cloud tier — no enterprise hardware required.
  3. Recognition beyond one employer. The name on the certificate should mean something to recruiters who have never met you.
  4. A reasonable cost of failure. Exam fees you could absorb if you needed a second attempt.

Every certification below passes the first two tests. They differ on the last two, which is where the ranking comes from.

The ranked shortlist

1. Oracle Database SQL Certified Associate (1Z0-071)

This is the default recommendation for a first database certification, and it has held that position for years. The exam is run by Oracle University and tests core SQL — querying, joins, data manipulation and the fundamentals of how relational databases organise data — on Oracle Database. It is not locked to a single database release, so it does not go stale the way version-coded exams can.

As of 2026 the exam is reported as 63 multiple-choice questions in 120 minutes with a 63% passing score (figures mirrored from Oracle's exam page by prep providers — confirm on the official page when you book). It costs $245 USD, the fee varies by country, and a purchased attempt must typically be scheduled within six months. There are no prerequisites, and the credential does not expire.

Why it ranks first: SQL is the one skill every database role shares, Oracle's name carries weight with recruiters, and analysts, developers and future database administrators (DBAs) all benefit equally. If you can only take one exam this year, this is the safest bet.

2. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Foundations Associate

If $245 is a barrier, start here instead — Oracle states on its certification-cost blog that its foundational OCI certifications are completely free: the learning path, the practice exams and the exam attempt itself, with an expanded set of free certifications announced for 2026. The current exam code is 1Z0-1085-26, and as of 2026 Oracle has dropped calendar years from certification titles, so the credential is simply "OCI Foundations Associate".

Be clear about what it is: a conceptual cloud exam, not a hands-on database test. You will learn how Oracle's cloud platform — including its database services — is structured, which is useful context but not a substitute for SQL skill. Note also that OCI certifications are valid for 24 months from the date earned, unlike Oracle's database credentials, which never expire.

Why it ranks second: zero financial risk, a real Oracle credential on your CV, and a gentle introduction to exam mechanics before you spend money on a bigger exam.

3. Oracle MySQL certifications

MySQL is one of the most widely deployed open-source databases, and Oracle (which owns MySQL) runs its certification programme. Three exams exist as of August 2026: the MySQL 8.0 Database Administrator (1Z0-908), the MySQL 8.0 Database Developer (1Z0-909) and the MySQL Implementation Associate (1Z0-922). The 1Z0-908 administrator exam is the flagship, reported at 73 questions in 120 minutes with a 62% passing score, priced at $245 USD, and — like Oracle's other product certifications — it never expires.

Honest caveat for beginners: 1Z0-908 is an administration exam, and it assumes comfort running a server, not just querying one. It is an excellent second certification, or a first one if you are already tinkering with MySQL on personal projects. The full track, including costs and preparation, is covered in our MySQL certification guide.

4. Microsoft Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300)

Microsoft's DP-300 exam certifies you to administer SQL Server and Azure SQL relational databases. At $165 USD (varying by country of proctoring) it is the cheapest paid exam on this list, and Microsoft's renewal model is friendly: the certification is valid for one year but renews free via an online, unproctored assessment on Microsoft Learn, available from six months before expiry.

It ranks fourth for beginners only because it is a role-based administrator exam — Microsoft pitches it at people doing the job, and it uses the standard 700/1000 scaled passing score across scenario-heavy content. Choose it if your target employers run Microsoft SQL Server or Azure; treat it as a stretch goal otherwise.

5. EDB PostgreSQL Certified Associate

PostgreSQL is enormously popular, but there is a catch every beginner should know: the PostgreSQL Global Development Group — the open-source project itself — offers no official certification. The best-known vendor credential comes from EDB (EnterpriseDB), which runs Associate and Professional levels tagged to PostgreSQL versions. Exact current fees and formats should be confirmed on EDB's certification page before you commit. Because the ecosystem is fragmented, we unpack the options — EDB and the third-party alternatives — in a dedicated guide to PostgreSQL certification options.

6. MongoDB Associate credentials

If your interest is document databases rather than relational ones, MongoDB runs its own associate-level certification programme. Our research pack for this article did not verify current MongoDB exam fees or formats, so check the details directly on MongoDB's official certification pages. For most newcomers, though, a relational/SQL credential remains the better first move — SQL appears in far more job descriptions than any single NoSQL product.

Which one should you take first?

The ranking above assumes nothing about you. Adjust it to your situation:

  • No IT background at all: start with the free OCI Foundations Associate to build exam confidence, then take 1Z0-071. Total outlay: $245.
  • Developer who already writes queries: go straight to 1Z0-071, or consider the MySQL Developer exam (1Z0-909) if MySQL is your daily stack.
  • Helpdesk or support analyst aiming at a DBA role: 1Z0-071 first for the SQL foundation, then a platform administration exam chosen by what your employer runs — that decision is mapped in the DBA certifications guide.
  • Committed to the Microsoft ecosystem: DP-300, accepting that you will work harder for it than the "entry level" label on this list implies.
  • Data analyst ambitions: 1Z0-071 again — and if you are weighing SQL credentials against each other across vendors, see our comparison of the best SQL certifications. Whether a SQL certificate beats a portfolio of demonstrable queries is a fair question, and we give it a full cost-benefit verdict in is SQL certification worth it?

A realistic 12-week plan for your first exam

Using 1Z0-071 as the example, here is a sequence that works for someone studying around a job:

  1. Weeks 1–2: install a free Oracle database environment (or use a browser-based SQL sandbox) and work through basic SELECT statements daily. Fluency at the keyboard matters more than reading.
  2. Weeks 3–5: joins, subqueries, set operators. Write every query yourself before looking at a model answer.
  3. Weeks 6–8: data manipulation (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE), transactions, and the data-dictionary topics that pure query practice never touches.
  4. Weeks 9–10: take untimed practice questions topic by topic and log every miss. Your error log — not your score — tells you what to restudy. ExamPractice offers free sample questions across certification exams so you can gauge question style before committing to anything.
  5. Weeks 11–12: full timed simulations under exam conditions. When your results are consistently clear of the passing score with time to spare, book the exam — remembering the six-month scheduling window on a purchased Oracle attempt.

Mistakes first-time candidates make

  • Chasing the "easiest" exam rather than the most useful one. An easy certificate nobody recognises is wasted money. Recognition is the point.
  • Studying from question banks alone. Memorising answers teaches you the questions, not SQL, and it collapses the moment an exam rephrases a scenario. Use practice questions to diagnose weak topics, then fix those topics at the keyboard.
  • Ignoring expiry rules. Oracle's database and MySQL credentials never expire, OCI cloud certifications last 24 months, and Microsoft role-based certifications renew annually (free, online). Factor maintenance into your choice, not just the sticker price.
  • Booking before benchmarking. A timed practice run costs you an evening; a failed attempt costs the full exam fee.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest database certification to get?

The OCI Foundations Associate is the most accessible: no fee, no prerequisites, conceptual content and a free official learning path. But "easiest with real value" is 1Z0-071 — harder, yet the credential recruiters actually search for.

Do I need work experience before certifying?

No exam on this list enforces experience requirements. Practical fluency still decides who passes: build everything you study in a live database, even a free local install.

Can I sit these exams from home?

Oracle exams are delivered through Oracle University with Pearson VUE, with online proctored testing available alongside test centres. Check the delivery options for your country when you register.
