• If you want to prove Atlassian tooling fluency, ACP-120 remains the strongest pick even for agile roles — the person who can configure boards, workflows and permissions properly is valuable on any agile team, and administration knowledge is what the exam measures.

Consider a realistic case. An IT support engineer with three years' experience spends half her week triaging requests in JSM and half doing light Jira admin — user management, a few workflow tweaks. Her instinct is ACP-120 because it is the famous one. But her employer's job architecture promotes support engineers into service management leads, not Jira admins. For her, the Associate ITSM credential now and ACP-420 within a year track her actual career path; ACP-120 can wait until administration becomes her formal remit. That is the level at which this decision should be made — role trajectory, not exam popularity.

Which Atlassian certification should you take first?

If you are still undecided after the framework above, default to ACP-120 Jira Administration for Cloud — it has the broadest recognition, aligns with Atlassian's platform direction, and administration skills underpin every other specialism in the ecosystem. Choose ACP-100 only when a Data Center estate demands it, the JSM track when service management is your lane, and pair any Atlassian exam with a methodology credential if agile delivery is your real story.
