That single fact changes the whole "AZ-204 vs AZ-400" question, so before comparing the two roles, it is worth being clear about what each credential now is — and what your realistic route to DevOps Engineer Expert looks like in late 2026.

What each certification is (and was)

Azure Developer Associate (AZ-204) was Microsoft's role-based certification for people who write applications that run on Azure. Its exam domains covered developing Azure compute solutions, developing for Azure storage, implementing Azure security, monitoring and optimising solutions, and connecting to Azure and third-party services. As of August 2026, the official Microsoft Learn page carries a retirement notice: the certification and its renewal assessment are retired. Secondary sources place the retirement at the end of July 2026 and name an AI-focused successor exam (AI-200, for an Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate credential), though Microsoft had not published full details of the successor at the time of writing. If you already hold AZ-204, it stays on your Microsoft transcript permanently, but it can no longer be renewed once it lapses.

DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400) is an active, expert-level Microsoft certification earned by passing exam AZ-400, "Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions". Its domains span DevOps processes and communications, source control strategy, build and release pipelines, a security and compliance plan, and an instrumentation strategy — across both GitHub and Azure DevOps tooling. Crucially, passing AZ-400 alone does not award the certification: Microsoft requires you to also hold either Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) or Azure Developer Associate (AZ-204). It is one of only two Microsoft certifications with a mandatory certification prerequisite (the other being Azure Solutions Architect Expert).

How the two roles actually differ

The certifications mirror two genuinely different jobs, and the difference is not seniority so much as scope.

An Azure developer's unit of work is the application. They design and build the code that runs in Azure compute services, wire it to storage and messaging, secure it, and instrument it. Success is measured in working features. The retired AZ-204 exam reflected that: it assumed programming ability and tested whether you could implement solutions with Azure's building blocks.

A DevOps engineer's unit of work is the delivery system around applications. They own how code flows from a repository through build and release pipelines into production, how quality and security gates are enforced along the way, and how running systems are observed and fed back into planning. AZ-400 reflects that: it is less about writing application code and more about designing processes — branching strategies, pipeline architecture, compliance controls, telemetry. It is a breadth-and-judgement exam layered on top of hands-on platform experience, which is precisely why Microsoft gates it behind an associate-level certification.

A useful test when deciding which role fits you: when a release goes wrong, do you instinctively open the application logs to debug the code, or the pipeline run to debug the process? The first instinct is a developer's; the second is a DevOps engineer's.

Note the scoring detail, because it is widely misread: 700 out of 1,000 is a scaled score, not 70% of questions correct. Microsoft also does not publish question counts for its exams, so treat any "AZ-400 has 40–60 questions" claim as folklore.

Which should you take first? The 2026 answer

Historically, "AZ-204 or AZ-400 first?" had a clean answer: AZ-400 required an associate certification first, and developers naturally took AZ-204 as their prerequisite while ops-leaning candidates took AZ-104. The retirement collapses that choice.

If you do not yet hold AZ-204, your practical route to DevOps Engineer Expert is now AZ-104 → AZ-400. The Azure Administrator Associate certification remains active and satisfies the prerequisite. That means a developer aiming at the DevOps credential must now pass an administration-flavoured exam — identities, storage, compute, networking, monitoring — before AZ-400. It is a detour, but not a wasted one: pipeline work constantly touches the resources, permissions and networking that AZ-104 covers, and DevOps engineers who cannot reason about the infrastructure they deploy to tend to struggle in the role anyway. If you already hold a valid AZ-204, it still counts as an AZ-400 prerequisite while your certification is valid. One nuance to plan around: Microsoft's role-based certifications expire after one year, and with AZ-204's renewal assessment retired, an existing holder cannot renew it. Consider a .NET developer with three years of experience who deploys to Azure App Service through pipelines a platform team built, and who wants to move into a DevOps role. In 2025 the obvious plan was AZ-204 then AZ-400. In late 2026 the sensible plan looks like this:

  1. Skip fundamentals unless entirely new to Azure (AZ-900 is optional and has no bearing on prerequisites).
  2. Prepare for and pass AZ-104, leaning on existing deployment experience and shoring up the identity, governance and networking domains that developers rarely touch.
  3. Spend deliberate time owning pipeline work — branching strategy, build/release definitions, secrets handling, monitoring dashboards — because AZ-400 assumes practitioner judgement, not just study.
  4. Sit AZ-400 and earn DevOps Engineer Expert.
  5. Renew annually through Microsoft's free, unproctored online renewal assessment, which opens in the six months before expiry and can be retaken without limit.

What about salary differences?

Search demand for "Azure developer vs DevOps salary" is real, but honest data is thin, and we could not verify specific salary figures against a primary source during research for this article. Training-industry salary surveys have generally placed Microsoft's expert-level certifications among the better-paying credentials, which fits the structural logic: AZ-400 sits a tier above associate level and gates on prior certification plus real-world breadth.
