A developer with two years of Python behind her and a team that just moved everything to AWS has £150-worth of a decision to make: book the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) like everyone on LinkedIn seems to, or take the AWS Certified Developer – Associate (DVA-C02), which actually matches what she does all day. The certifications cost the same, take the same time to sit, and carry the same associate-level weight — yet they test noticeably different ways of thinking about the cloud.
Short answer: choose Solutions Architect – Associate if you want the broader, more widely recognised credential or your work involves designing systems; choose Developer – Associate if you write application code against AWS services daily and want an exam that rewards that depth. Neither is "higher" than the other — both sit at the associate tier of Amazon Web Services' certification portfolio, and there is no rule forcing you to take either first.
Both credentials are issued by AWS, each through a single proctored exam, and both are valid for three years. The difference is the professional lens they test.
The Solutions Architect – Associate exam (code SAA-C03) tests whether you can design solutions: picking the right services, weighing cost against resilience, securing workloads, and architecting for failure. It ranges widely across the AWS catalogue because architects must know what exists and when to reach for it.
The Developer – Associate exam (code DVA-C02) tests whether you can build and ship on AWS: working with software development kits (SDKs) and application programming interfaces (APIs), serverless functions, deployment pipelines, debugging, and securing code with AWS's identity services. It goes narrower but deeper into the services developers touch directly.
A useful mental test: if a question began "your company needs a highly available architecture for…", would you rather sketch the diagram or write the Lambda function inside it? Your honest answer is a strong signal.

The logistics are nearly identical, which is precisely why the decision should rest on role fit rather than exam mechanics. On paper the two exams share plenty of services: compute, storage, databases, identity and access management. In practice, they interrogate those services from opposite ends.
SAA-C03 questions tend to present a business scenario and ask you to select the architecture that best satisfies competing constraints — cost, availability, performance, security. You need working familiarity with a wide slice of AWS, because wrong answers are often real services used in the wrong context.
DVA-C02 questions live closer to the code. Expect scenarios about how an application authenticates to a service, why a deployment failed, how to instrument and trace a distributed application, or which SDK behaviour explains an error. You need fewer services, but you must know them the way someone who calls their APIs every day knows them.
Architects are graded on judgement — "which design is most cost-effective while remaining highly available?" Developers are graded on precision — "what exactly happens when this function is invoked this way?" Candidates who sit both often report that neither is strictly harder; each punishes the mindset you haven't practised. If your instinct is to reach for documentation on service limits and API behaviour, DVA-C02 will feel natural. If you enjoy weighing trade-offs between designs, SAA-C03 will.

There is no reliable published salary split between the two associate certifications, and pay depends far more on role, location and experience than on which associate badge you hold.
