AWS Practice Tests: How to Prepare Effectively

When to start AWS practice tests, what your scores actually mean against scaled passing marks, and a review technique that turns mocks into passes.

Here is an uncomfortable pattern: a candidate scores 92% on a practice test they have seen twice before, books the real exam, and discovers on the day that AWS wrote 65 questions they had never memorised answers to. The practice tests were not the problem. The way they were used was — as a reassurance machine instead of a measuring instrument.

Short answer: AWS practice tests work when you use them in three distinct modes at three distinct times — untimed domain checks during your content phase, a diagnostic full-length run once content is covered, and timed dress rehearsals in your final fortnight — and when you spend more time reviewing each test than sitting it. A score means little; a reviewed score changes what you study next.

What is a practice test actually for?

A practice question is a study aid: a way to test whether you can apply an exam objective, not a preview of the live exam's content. That framing matters, because each purpose implies a different behaviour. Used properly, practice tests do four jobs no other study method does as well:

  1. Diagnosis — they locate weak domains with more precision than your own intuition, which reliably overrates topics you enjoy.
  2. Format training — AWS questions are scenario-driven and deliberately include plausible distractors; recognising how the exam asks is a separate skill from knowing the answer.
  3. Timing rehearsal — 65 questions in 130 minutes (the Associate-level format) is exactly two minutes per question; you learn pacing only by practising against a clock.
  4. A booking decision — a full-length, first-sight, timed result is the best available evidence for "book it" versus "wait two weeks".

What they cannot do is teach you material from scratch or predict your exact scaled score — treat any tool's "predicted score" as a rough compass, not a promise.

When should you start practice tests?

Earlier than most people think for questions, later than most people think for full mocks.

Your first full-length test: only after one complete content pass. Sitting a full mock in week one mostly measures what you already knew and burns a fresh test you could have used as a clean benchmark later. The exception: a short, deliberately unscored sampler before studying to see the question style — fine, as long as you treat the result as noise.

Timed, exam-condition runs: the final two to three weeks. By then the score reflects preparation rather than prior knowledge, and there is still time to act on what it reveals.

A note on supply: keep at least one full-length set you have never seen for your final week. First-sight performance is the only kind that predicts anything.

What score should you aim for?

This is where AWS candidates most often mislead themselves, because AWS does not score exams as a percentage. Results are reported on a scaled range of 100–1,000, with passing marks of 700 for Foundational exams, 720 for Associate, and 750 for Professional and Specialty. A scaled score is not "72% of questions correct" — the scaling accounts for differences between exam forms, and AWS does not publish a questions-to-score conversion.

So use practice percentages as a directional benchmark, not a conversion:

  • Below ~60% on a first-sight mock: the gap is content, not technique. Go back to the weak domains before taking another full test.
  • Roughly 60–75%: you are in the repair zone — close enough that targeted review of specific domains will move you, far enough that booking now is a gamble.
  • Consistently above ~80% on first-sight, timed full-length tests: a reasonable readiness signal that many candidates use as their booking trigger. It is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee — nobody outside AWS can promise a pass, and no reputable provider will.

The italics carry the whole system. 95% on a repeated test is not a signal; it is memorisation wearing a signal's clothes.

How do you review a practice test properly?

The review is the product; the sitting is just data collection. Budget as much time to review a test as you spent taking it, and process every question — including the ones you got right — into four bins:

  • Right and sure. Move on.
  • Right but guessed. The most dangerous bin, because scores hide it. Treat these as wrong: you were lucky, and luck is not a domain.
  • Wrong on knowledge. You did not know the fact or service behaviour. These go on a restudy list, tagged by exam-guide domain.
  • Wrong on reading. You knew it, but misread the scenario — missed a "MOST cost-effective" qualifier, or answered the question you expected instead of the one asked. These need technique drills (slowing down on the final sentence of the stem), not restudy.

Keep the tally in a simple error log with one row per missed question: domain, service, why lost (knowledge or reading), and the one-line lesson. After two or three tests the log stops looking like bad luck and starts looking like a map — the same two domains, the same rushed misreads. That map, cross-referenced against the official exam guide's domain weightings, is your remaining study plan.

Two review habits worth stealing:

  • Explain the wrong options. For each missed question, articulate why every distractor is wrong. AWS distractors are usually real services applied in the wrong context, so this drills exactly the discrimination the exam tests.
  • Never restudy from the question bank itself. When a question exposes a gap, close it in the documentation or your course notes, then return. Re-reading answer explanations until they feel familiar is how answer-memorisation starts — and memorised answers not only fail to transfer to the real exam's differently-worded scenarios, chasing "the real questions" from illegitimate sources violates AWS's exam policies and puts your certification at risk.

How do you make mock conditions match exam conditions?

In the final fortnight, at least one run should be a genuine dress rehearsal:

  1. Full length, full clock. 90 minutes for Cloud Practitioner's 65 questions; 130 minutes for the 65-question Associate exams; 180 minutes for the 75-question Professional exams. Sit the whole thing in one block.
  2. One screen, no notes, no pauses. The habits you rehearse are the habits that show up under pressure.
  3. Practise flag-and-return. Decide your rule in advance — for instance, any question still unresolved after two and a half minutes gets flagged and revisited — and rehearse executing it without anxiety.
  4. Rehearse the ending. Leave ten minutes for flagged questions and never submit with blanks; AWS exams have no penalty structure you can exploit by leaving answers empty, so an educated guess always beats an omission.

One format caveat for 2026: the classic exams (CLF-C02, SAA-C03, DVA-C02 and peers) remain multiple choice and multiple response, but the newer AI-focused exams — AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) and Machine Learning Engineer Associate (MLA-C01) — introduced ordering, matching and case-study question types. Three practice-test mistakes that cost real money

Mistake 1: The infinite-mocks loop. Taking test after test without a review cycle between them. Each unreviewed test is a wasted fresh set; you are sanding the same surface with used sandpaper. Fix: no new test until the error log from the last one has been actioned.

Mistake 2: Trusting a repeated-test score. The second attempt at the same set measures memory, not readiness. Fix: track first-sight scores separately, and make booking decisions only on those.

Mistake 3: Practising untimed forever. Untimed scores run comfortably higher, and candidates who never rehearse pacing meet time pressure for the first time on exam day — usually somewhere around question 45 with 20 minutes left. Fix: every full-length test in the final fortnight runs on the real clock.

A quick readiness gate before you book

Book when all four hold; wait when any one fails:

  • Your last two first-sight, timed full-length scores sit above the ~80% rule-of-thumb band.
  • No single exam-guide domain scores dramatically below the others in your per-domain breakdown.
  • Your error log shows reading errors shrinking, not just knowledge errors.
  • You finished each timed run with time to revisit flagged questions.

Failing the gate is cheap — two more weeks of targeted repair. Failing the exam costs the full fee ($100–$300 USD depending on level, varying by country) and a wait to rebook. The gate exists because the voucher maths favours patience.

Frequently asked questions

How many full-length practice tests do I need?

Enough to reach the readiness gate with at least one never-seen set left for the final week — for most candidates that lands at three to five, reviewed properly. Fifty tests reviewed badly beat nobody.

Are practice test questions the same as the real exam's questions?

No, and be wary of anything claiming otherwise. Legitimate practice questions are written to the official exam guide's objectives and style; the live item pool is confidential, and AWS scenarios will be worded differently from anything you practised. That is precisely why understanding beats memorisation.

My practice tool reports a percentage but AWS reports 100–1,000. How do I compare them?

You can't directly — AWS's scaled scoring has no published percentage conversion. Use the directional bands above and judge readiness on first-sight trends, per-domain balance and timing comfort together, not on a single number.

Do wrong answers on the real exam cost extra marks?
