The AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional is one of AWS's Professional-tier certifications, alongside Solutions Architect – Professional. Where the architect credential attests design judgement, this one attests operational automation judgement: the ability to provision, operate and manage AWS environments through automated, repeatable, monitored processes rather than by hand. Continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), infrastructure as code with tools such as AWS CloudFormation, automated governance, and monitoring-driven incident response are the natural habitat of a DOP-C02 candidate.
AWS recommends candidates have two or more years of experience provisioning, operating and managing AWS environments, together with a scripting background. This guide will not reproduce that breakdown, deliberately: weightings are version-specific, and every serious candidate should be working from the current official document rather than a paraphrase.
What the official guide cannot tell you is how to read it, so here is the interpretation that matters. For each task statement, ask three questions of yourself:

For each weak area, do the thing in a real AWS account: write the template, build the pipeline stage, configure the alarm, break it, and watch how it fails. Sit full-length, timed 75-question practice sessions in one sitting, then spend as long analysing the attempt as you spent taking it: bucket every wrong answer by exam-guide domain, and classify it as a knowledge gap, a misread constraint, or a rushed guess — each has a different fix. Registration itself is the easy part: sign in at aws.amazon.com/certification/, select AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional (DOP-C02), choose test centre or online proctoring, pick a slot, pay, and confirm your ID details match your booking name exactly.
No. AWS enforces no prerequisites on any exam. Many candidates do hold one of those Associates first — and benefit from the 50% discount voucher and the renewal ripple described above — but going straight to the Professional is permitted.
No. DOP-C02 is multiple choice and multiple response only. You will reason about code, templates and pipelines in the questions, but you will not write or configure anything live during the exam.
DOP-C02 is the current version as of August 2026, with no successor announced. AWS announces exam transitions on its certification coming-soon page — worth a glance when you book, given how actively AWS has been revising its portfolio.
You can retake the exam after AWS's waiting period, paying the fee again — so build your buffer before booking rather than treating the first attempt as reconnaissance at $300. AWS does not publish pass rates, so disregard any site claiming to know DOP-C02's.
