There is a deadline attached to this exam, and it should shape your entire study plan: AWS has scheduled the Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty certification for retirement, with 31 December 2026 as the last day the ANS-C01 exam can be taken. No successor exam had been announced as of August 2026. If you earn the credential before the cut-off it remains active for the standard three years — so for network engineers who want AWS's deepest networking validation on their record, the question is no longer whether to prepare but how efficiently. This guide lays out a preparation approach for ANS-C01's hybrid-networking core — Direct Connect, Transit Gateway, DNS and the design trade-offs between them — built for people working against that calendar.

Download the official ANS-C01 exam guide from AWS's certification page and treat its domain list and weightings as your syllabus — this article deliberately does not paraphrase them, because the guide is authoritative and free. What the guide cannot tell you, and what this section can, is the mindset the questions reward.
ANS-C01 is a specialist's exam in the truest sense: it assumes you already think in routing tables, BGP path selection and failure domains, and it tests whether you can express that thinking through AWS's constructs. Questions describe hybrid topologies — corporate data centres, multiple VPCs, multiple Regions, sometimes multiple AWS accounts — and ask you to achieve a connectivity, resilience, performance or cost goal. The wrong options are rarely nonsense; they are designs a competent engineer might build that fail one stated requirement, often quietly.
That means your preparation should constantly ask three questions of every AWS networking construct you study:
Rather than working through a course linearly, organise your preparation around the technical pillars that hybrid AWS networking is actually built from. For each pillar: read the AWS documentation's concepts pages, build what you can in a lab account, and write a one-page decision summary in your own words.
This is the heart of the exam's hybrid focus. You should be able to reason fluently about when a dedicated physical connection is justified over VPN, how the two combine for resilience, and how routing behaves across those boundaries — including how BGP attributes influence path selection between redundant links. Lab reality check: most candidates cannot provision a real Direct Connect circuit for study, and that is fine. You can still build and dismantle site-to-site VPNs, inspect the routing behaviour, and study Direct Connect through AWS's documentation and published resiliency recommendations. Write out failover narratives by hand: "primary link down — what happens, in what order, and what does the customer notice?"
Modern multi-VPC estates route through hub-and-spoke designs, and the exam expects you to know when a hub is the right answer versus simpler point-to-point alternatives — and what happens to routing, segmentation and bandwidth as the estate grows. This pillar is eminently lab-able: creating several small VPCs, attaching them to a Transit Gateway, and experimenting with route-table segmentation costs little and teaches more than any video. Pay particular attention to how designs extend across Regions and accounts, because scenario questions favour exactly those messy, realistic estates.
Hybrid DNS is a classic stumbling block: resolution needs to flow both ways between on-premises resolvers and AWS-hosted zones, and questions probe whether you know how to wire that up and troubleshoot it when described symptoms point to a resolution failure. Study private and public hosted zone behaviour, conditional forwarding patterns between corporate DNS and the cloud, and how DNS-based routing policies interact with health checks for failover designs. In your lab, break name resolution deliberately and diagnose it — the exam's troubleshooting questions read like tickets, and ticket instinct is trainable.
Expect security to be woven through scenarios rather than quarantined in its own questions: segmenting traffic, inspecting it centrally, exposing services privately rather than over the public internet, and terminating TLS in the right place. Focus on where in a topology each control belongs and what traffic each one can and cannot see. The unglamorous pillar that decides marginal passes. Know how to capture and read flow-level telemetry, how to trace why a packet was dropped, and which tool answers which operational question. When a scenario says "the team needs to identify which security rule is blocking traffic", the answer is usually a specific capability, and candidates who have only built networks — never operated them — miss these marks.
Working backwards from the 31 December 2026 cut-off, build slack into your schedule: aim to sit the exam no later than early December, leaving room for one retake if needed (AWS retake policies and waiting periods are published on its certification policies pages — check them rather than assuming). A workable rhythm for a practising network engineer studying alongside a job is one pillar every one to two weeks, followed by a consolidation block of timed question practice. Engineers newer to AWS — strong on networking fundamentals but light on the AWS constructs — should double the pillar time and resist the temptation to skip labs; this exam punishes purely theoretical preparation more than any associate-level test.
Question practice belongs in the consolidation block, and its job is diagnosis. Run timed sets, then dissect every miss: was it a knowledge gap (you did not know the limit or behaviour), a reading failure (you missed the stated constraint), or a judgement error (you knew both but weighed them wrongly)? Each failure type has a different remedy — more documentation, slower reading, more design comparison — and logging which type dominates is how you spend your remaining weeks well. Sitting ANS-C01 in 2026 makes sense if networking is your professional identity: engineers running hybrid estates, consultants designing connectivity for clients, and specialists whose CVs benefit from the deepest networking credential AWS has offered. Earned before the deadline, it stays active for three years — plenty of time for it to do its work on your career.
It makes less sense if networking is one competency among many for you.
