Free CWAP-403: Certified Wireless Analysis Professional Exam Questions and Answers
Certified Wireless Analysis Professional is exam CWAP-403, part of the CWNP wireless certification programme. The professional exams share one format exactly: 60 multiple-choice and multiple-answer questions in 90 minutes, 70% to pass — 80% if you are certifying as an instructor — sat through CWNP remote proctoring or at a Prometric centre, in English only, and valid for three years. CWNA is the hinge of the programme: it must be passed before CWSP, CWDP or CWAP, which can then be taken in any order. CWNP versions its codes as it revises each exam, so a number here may have been superseded by a later revision of the same certification.

Question #1
Which description best fits a sticky client?
Correct answer: B
Explanation
A sticky client holds on to its current AP while the signal degrades instead of roaming to a better one. The client that roams back and forth while stationary is the opposite problem, excessive roaming. Stale PMK use and Reassociation timing are separate issues that do not describe sticky behavior.

Question #2
In a capture of QoS Data frames, which subfield of the QoS Control field carries the user priority that determines the access category of the frame?
Correct answer: C
Explanation
The TID subfield holds the traffic identifier, which for EDCA is the user priority (0 to 7) that maps to one of the four access categories. Ack Policy defines the acknowledgment method, EOSP marks the end of a service period, and A-MSDU Present indicates the payload type.

Question #3
An analyst has opened a saved trace file that contains frames from three BSSs on channel 36. The analyst needs to see only the frames exchanged with one client, without altering the saved file. What should the analyst do?
Correct answer: D
Explanation
A display filter hides non-matching frames in a saved trace and leaves the file unchanged. Capture filters only act while frames are being captured. Slicing is also a capture-time setting, and colorization only highlights frames without hiding the others.

Question #4
In an HT mixed format PPDU, which preamble field carries the MCS index that the receiver uses to demodulate the data portion?
Correct answer: B
Explanation
HT-SIG carries the MCS, channel width, length and guard interval information for the HT portion of the PPDU. L-SIG holds legacy rate and length values for legacy devices, and the STF and LTF fields are training fields used for gain control and channel estimation.

Question #5
An analyst captures traffic from a WPA2-Personal WLAN and enters the correct passphrase and SSID in the analyzer's decryption settings. The beacons decode normally, but the data frames from one laptop still show as encrypted payload. The trace contains no EAPOL-Key frames for that laptop. What is the most likely reason the data frames are not decrypted?
Correct answer: C
Explanation
The analyzer derives the PTK from the PMK (from passphrase and SSID) plus the nonces and addresses seen in the 4-Way Handshake. Without that handshake in the trace, unicast frames for that laptop cannot be decrypted. Analyzers can decrypt CCMP, the GTK covers only group traffic, and aggregation does not block decryption.

Question #6
An engineer must analyze the Reassociation exchange of a client roaming from AP1 on channel 36 to AP2 on channel 149. A first capture taken with one adapter fixed on channel 36 shows the client's last frames to AP1 but nothing afterward. What should the engineer do to capture the entire roam?
Correct answer: B
Explanation
Channels 36 and 149 are far apart, so one radio cannot hear both, and a scanning radio misses frames while it is tuned to the other channel. Two adapters fixed on each channel, with their captures aggregated, record both sides of the roam in time order. A capture filter reduces data but does not add missing channels.

Question #7
Users of handheld scanners report intermittent disconnects. A capture shows the AP sending Disassociation frames with reason code 4 (disassociated due to inactivity) to scanners that were idle for a few minutes. The analyst forms the hypothesis that the AP idle timeout on that SSID is shorter than the idle periods of the scanners. What should the analyst do next?
Correct answer: B
Explanation
After forming a hypothesis, the analyst tests it by changing a single variable and checking the result with new data. Changing many settings at once hides which change had the effect. Power and driver changes do not address the reason code 4 evidence.

Question #8
Which term describes the level of ambient RF energy measured on a channel when no intentional transmissions are present?
Correct answer: C
Explanation
The noise floor is the sum of ambient RF energy from thermal noise and unintentional radiators, expressed in dBm. SNR is the difference between signal and noise floor, so it is derived from the noise floor rather than being the noise itself. Duty cycle describes how much time a transmitter is active.

Question #9
A WLAN engineer is investigating an interferer that transmits short bursts every few seconds on the 2.4 GHz band. The real-time FFT view usually shows nothing at the moment the engineer looks at it. Which view accumulates several minutes of sweeps into a single plot, with color indicating how often each frequency and amplitude combination was measured?
Correct answer: D
Explanation
The density view accumulates sweeps over time and uses color intensity to show how frequently each amplitude occurs at each frequency, so intermittent bursts become visible. The real-time FFT shows only the current sweep. A waterfall spreads sweeps along a time axis instead of combining them in one plot.

Question #10
Which capture configuration setting reduces the storage used per frame by saving only the first part of each frame, such as the headers, and discarding the rest of the payload?
Correct answer: C
Explanation
Packet slicing truncates each captured frame to a set number of bytes, keeping headers while shrinking the file. A capture filter decides which whole frames are kept, not how much of each frame is kept. Dwell time controls how long the adapter stays on a channel while scanning.
