The 2026 structure: five tracks, five tiers

  2. System Administrator / Developer — where RHCSA sits, as the Administrator-tier credential of the Enterprise Linux track.
  3. Engineer — the RHCE level.
  4. Specialist — elective, deep proficiency in one product area.
  5. Architect — RHCA, the top of each track, now carrying a track suffix such as "RHCA – Enterprise Linux".

The consequential rule change is at the top: a new RHCA requires one Administrator/Developer-tier exam, one Engineer-tier exam, and three Specialist electives, all within a single track. Cross-track mixing — the old habit of stacking an OpenShift specialist on an Ansible one on a security one — is no longer valid for new RHCA attempts. Existing credentials remain valid through their normal three-year window, and titles update automatically in Red Hat's verification system.

Since 2019, EX294 has been an Ansible automation exam — you write Ansible Automation Platform playbooks to perform real tasks across multiple systems, and your playbooks are graded by being run against freshly installed machines.

The honest way to choose is by the job you want at the end, not by exam difficulty:

Timeline. One specialist per 9–12 months is a sustainable cadence for a working engineer — these are performance exams in products you should genuinely be using. Rung four: RHCA — the architect tier

The Red Hat Certified Architect is now the summit of each track rather than a single generalist crown: RHCA – Enterprise Linux, RHCA – Ansible, and so on. Common mistakes in multi-year Red Hat planning

  • Choosing specialists before choosing a track. Under the 2026 rules, specialists outside your track do not count towards your RHCA. Decide the destination first.

If you are starting from working Linux knowledge today, a defensible plan looks like this: RHCSA within six months; twelve months of deliberate Ansible use at work, then EX294; a track decision made by the end of year two based on where your organisation and the market are pulling you — container platforms being the strongest pull at present — and your first specialist booked before the end of year three. That leaves RHCA as a year-four-to-six goal with your entire stack still current when you get there.

Do Red Hat certifications expire?
