Exam PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst) is the single exam behind the Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate credential. As of 2026 the exam runs 100 minutes, is proctored through Pearson VUE at a test centre or online, costs $165 USD in the United States (pricing varies by country — confirm on Microsoft Learn), and requires 700 on a 1,000-point scale to pass. What the plan has to cover: the four PL-300 domains

Microsoft's skills outline for PL-300 groups everything into four areas: prepare the data; model the data; visualize and analyze the data; and manage and secure Power BI. Microsoft is explicit that the exam expects proficiency with Power Query and DAX (Data Analysis Expressions), and notes the exam "may have interactive components" — so expect to do things, not just recognise answers.

Two sequencing consequences follow from that outline:

  1. Preparation and modelling come first. Power Query transformations and semantic-model design are where hands-on fluency takes longest to build, and every downstream topic — visuals, analysis, security — sits on top of a model. Study them early so they have weeks to settle.
  2. Management and security can come late. Workspace roles, sensitivity settings and sharing behaviour are learnable in days, not weeks. Scheduling them near the end keeps them fresh for exam day.

Microsoft does not officially publish a question count for PL-300; community reports commonly describe roughly 40–60 questions, but treat that as unofficial. Plan around the one number that is official: 100 minutes.

Before week one: run a baseline and pick your track

Spend one evening on a diagnostic before committing to a schedule. Open a set of free PL-300 practice questions and attempt twenty or so without revising first. You are not trying to pass; you are mapping which of the four domains feel foreign.

Then choose a track:

  • Eight-week track — you use Power BI occasionally, or your work touches only one part of the pipeline (for example, you build visuals on models someone else designed). This is the default plan below.
  • Four-week track — you build reports end-to-end most weeks, write DAX measures without searching for syntax, and your diagnostic errors clustered in one domain. Compress the plan by merging weeks 1–2 into one week, weeks 3–4 into one week, and halving the visualisation block.

Whatever the track, protect a consistent rhythm: several focused sessions a week, each ending with you building something in Power BI Desktop rather than only reading or watching. The exam's interactive flavour rewards muscle memory.

Weeks 1–2: prepare the data (Power Query)

The opening fortnight belongs to Power Query, because data preparation underpins everything the other domains test.

Work through the "prepare the data" units of Microsoft Learn's PL-300 learning paths, then rebuild every technique on your own datasets. By the end of week two you should be able to, without notes:

  • Connect to multiple source types and configure storage mode sensibly.
  • Profile columns — distribution, quality, statistics — and act on what profiling reveals.
  • Resolve data quality problems: inconsistent types, errors, nulls, duplicates.
  • Merge and append queries, and explain when each is the right tool.
  • Fold, reference and stage queries so transformations stay maintainable.

A useful self-test at the end of the block: take a messy CSV export from your own work, and produce a clean, typed, deduplicated query in under thirty minutes. Weeks 3–4: model the data (star schemas and DAX)

Modelling is the block most candidates underestimate, and DAX is the reason. Split the fortnight deliberately:

Week 3 — model design. Build star schemas: fact and dimension tables, appropriate granularity, relationship cardinality and cross-filter direction, role-playing date tables. Practise flattening a snowflake, and configuring a proper date table for time intelligence. Every hour spent getting model shape right halves the DAX difficulty that follows.

Week 4 — DAX. Move from calculated columns to measures, then into the material the exam leans on: CALCULATE and filter context, iterators, time-intelligence functions, and variables for readable measures. Write each measure twice — once copying a reference, once from a blank formula bar the next day. Recall under pressure is the skill being examined.

Close the fortnight with a domain-specific quiz on preparation plus modelling topics only. Anything below roughly three-quarters correct in modelling earns DAX a permanent slot in your remaining weeks: one measure rebuilt from memory per study session.

Week 5: visualize and analyze the data

With a sound model, visualisation is the friendliest domain — but the exam tests judgement, not decoration. Focus on:

  • Choosing the right visual for the question (and knowing why the alternatives are wrong).
  • Slicers, filters, drill-through, tooltips and bookmarks — the interactivity layer.
  • Formatting for accessibility and clarity, including conditional formatting.
  • Analysis features: identifying outliers and trends, and using the built-in analytical visuals sensibly.

Build one complete report this week from a dataset you have never used before, start to finish: ingest, model, measure, visualise. This single exercise rehearses three domains at once and exposes any step where you still reach for a tutorial.

Week 6: manage and secure Power BI

The final content domain covers the Power BI service: workspaces and roles, distributing content through apps, refresh scheduling, and securing data — including row-level security (RLS), which is a classic exam topic because it joins modelling knowledge to administration.

Spend the week publishing your week-five report and managing its lifecycle: create a workspace, assign roles, configure RLS on the model and test it by viewing as a role, and walk through sharing and subscription options. This is also the sensible week to book your exam for the end of week eight. A fixed date sharpens the last fortnight, and Microsoft's retake policy — a 24-hour wait after a first failed attempt, longer for subsequent retries — means an unlucky day is a setback, not a catastrophe.

Week 7: full-length practice and weak-domain repair

Now the plan changes character: no new material. Week seven is measurement and repair.

Week 8: consolidation and logistics

The final week is deliberately light on new effort:

  • Days 1–3: one focused session per weak domain identified in week seven. Short, active sessions — rebuild a measure, re-run an RLS test — not marathon rereading.
  • Day 4: a last timed practice test. Expect nerves to cost a few points on the day; a comfortable margin here is worth more than a scraped pass.
  • Day 5: logistics. If testing online, run Pearson VUE's system check on the machine you will actually use, and prepare the room and ID requirements. If at a test centre, confirm the route and arrival time.
  • Days 6–7: rest, plus a light skim of your own notes. Cramming DAX syntax at midnight before a 100-minute applied exam is a poor trade.

Common study-plan mistakes (and the fix for each)

  • Watching instead of building. Video courses feel like progress; the exam rewards keyboard time. Fix: end every session inside Power BI Desktop.
  • Leaving DAX until "later". DAX needs repeated exposure over weeks. Fix: schedule it in week 4 and drip-feed it afterwards.
  • Skipping the service domain. Desktop-only candidates routinely drop marks on workspaces, refresh and RLS. Fix: an honest week six with a real published report.
  • First timed practice in the final week. That leaves no time to act on what it reveals. Fix: week seven, not week eight.
  • Memorising practice answers. It inflates mock scores and collapses on reworded questions. Fix: rotate pools, explain every answer to yourself, and treat misses as objectives to restudy.

How many hours a week does this plan assume?

The plan is structured around consistent multi-session weeks rather than a fixed hour count, because starting points vary enormously. There is no verified "hours to pass" figure for PL-300, and any plan promising one is guessing. Can I follow this plan with no Power BI experience at all?
