An Oracle certification is a credential issued by Oracle University — Oracle's training and certification arm — confirming that you have passed a proctored exam on one of Oracle's technologies: Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), Java, Oracle Database, or MySQL, among others. The programme is organised into levels (broadly Foundations, Associate, Professional and Master) and tracks (the technology areas), and the two ideas together define every credential Oracle offers.

If you are new to the programme, the structure can look more complicated than it is. Exam codes such as 1Z0-071 or 1Z0-830 sit next to acronyms such as OCA, OCP and OCM, some certifications expire while others never do, and in 2026 Oracle changed how its cloud credentials are even named. This guide untangles all of it: what each level means, what each major track covers, how much exams cost, how they are delivered, and which rules changed recently. It deliberately stops short of telling you which certification to choose — that comparison lives in our guide to the best Oracle certifications — and it stays out of study strategy, which has its own home in how to prepare for Oracle certification exams.

What is an Oracle certification, exactly?

Oracle certifications are vendor credentials: Oracle designs the exams, publishes the objectives, and issues the certificate when you pass. Exams are administered through Oracle University with Pearson VUE handling delivery, and you can sit them either online with a remote proctor or at a test centre. When you purchase an exam, you typically need to schedule it within six months.

Three things distinguish Oracle's programme from many other vendor schemes:

  • It spans very different technology families. A cloud-architecture exam, a Java programming exam and a database-administration exam all live under one certification umbrella, but they test unrelated skills and suit different careers.
  • The training is separated from the exam. Oracle publishes free learning paths on its MyLearn platform for its certification exams; the fee you pay is for the exam attempt itself, not the course.
  • Different tracks follow different lifecycle rules. Cloud credentials expire and need renewing; product credentials such as Java and Database do not. This single distinction causes more confusion than anything else in the programme, and we will come back to it in detail.

The Oracle certification levels

Oracle credentials sit on a ladder. Not every track uses every rung, but the levels mean the same thing wherever they appear.

Foundations Associate

Foundations-level certifications are entry points that test conceptual understanding rather than hands-on ability. The best-known example is the OCI Foundations Associate, which covers Oracle's cloud platform at a terminology-and-concepts level and assumes no prior experience. Oracle has stated on its certification-cost blog that its foundational-level OCI certifications are completely free — the learning path, practice exams and the exam attempt itself — and announced an expanded set of free certifications for 2026, though it has not published a definitive list of every exam included, so check the current promotion terms on education.oracle.com.

Associate

Associate-level certifications validate working competence in a role or product. Examples include the OCI Architect Associate, the Oracle Database SQL Certified Associate (exam 1Z0-071) and the Oracle Database 23ai Administration Associate (1Z0-182). Most associate exams have no formal prerequisites, though Oracle often recommends practical experience.

Professional

Professional-level certifications sit above Associate and target practitioners who design, build or administer systems at depth — the OCI Architect Professional and the Oracle Certified Professional: Java SE 21 Developer (1Z0-830) are examples. Historically some Professional exams required an Associate credential first; that is no longer universally true. The modern Java SE exam, for instance, awards OCP status directly with no Associate step, and the OCI Architect Professional had no enforced prerequisite as of the 2025/2026 cycle — though prerequisite rules can change, so confirm on the live exam page before assuming either way.

Master

Oracle Certified Master (OCM) is the programme's apex. Master exams are performance-based — you complete tasks in a live environment rather than answering multiple-choice questions — and they cost considerably more than the standard written exams. Very few candidates need this level; it exists for senior specialists demonstrating elite, hands-on mastery.

So what do OCA, OCP and OCM mean?

These initialisms are shorthand for the levels: Oracle Certified Associate, Oracle Certified Professional and Oracle Certified Master. You will still see them everywhere — in job adverts, on CVs, in older study material — but it helps to know how their usage has shifted:

  • OCA described the Associate rung. In the Java track the separate OCA exam no longer exists: since the Java 11 era, Oracle collapsed the old two-exam OCA-then-OCP path into a single Professional exam. In the Database track the Associate title survives — passing Oracle Database Administration I (1Z0-082) earns the Oracle Database Administration 2019 Certified Associate title, and 1Z0-071 earns the SQL Certified Associate.
  • OCP remains a live title in several tracks — Java SE 21 Developer and Database Administration 2019 Certified Professional both carry it.
  • OCM still denotes the performance-based Master tier.

If you remember one thing: OCA, OCP and OCM describe how advanced a credential is, not what technology it covers. The track tells you the technology.

The main Oracle certification tracks

Oracle organises its exams by technology family. Four tracks account for most candidates.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)

The OCI track certifies skills on Oracle's cloud platform and is the fastest-changing part of the programme. It runs from the free Foundations Associate, through role-based Associate exams (Architect, Developer, Operations and others), up to Professional-level exams such as the OCI Architect Professional. OCI exams are refreshed yearly — codes carry year suffixes such as -25 and -26 — and older-coded versions retire on a rolling basis. Oracle has also announced new OCI tracks arriving in late 2026, including a Multicloud Foundations entry-level certification and an Exadata Database Service professional-level certification, per Oracle University's 2026 updates blog.

The full ladder, exam by exam, is mapped in our Oracle Cloud Infrastructure certification guide, and the architect-specific route has its own Oracle Cloud Architect certification guide.

Java

The Java track certifies programming ability on Java SE. The current flagship is the Oracle Certified Professional: Java SE 21 Developer exam (1Z0-830), based on Java 21, the long-term-support release — it covers modern features such as virtual threads, records and pattern matching alongside core language, streams and concurrency. The previous Java 17 exam (1Z0-829) coexisted with it through 2025; whether it remains purchasable now is something to verify on Oracle's site rather than assume. Java certifications, once earned, do not expire.

For how the Java exams relate to each other, see the Oracle Java certification guide; the flagship exam itself is dissected in the Java SE Programmer certification guide.

Oracle Database

The Database track covers SQL and database administration on Oracle Database. Its entry exam is the Oracle Database SQL Certified Associate (1Z0-071), and above it sit two parallel administration routes: the 19c-based Administration 2019 track (exams 1Z0-082 and 1Z0-083) and the newer one-exam Oracle Database 23ai Administration Associate (1Z0-182). Both routes exist side by side as of 2026 because 19c remains the long-term-support release many employers still run while 23ai is Oracle's current release. Database credentials do not expire.

We cover this track's exams and progression in the Oracle Database certification guide, and the administrator-role route specifically in the Oracle DBA certification guide.

MySQL

Oracle also owns MySQL, and certifies it separately from Oracle Database. The flagship is the Oracle Certified Professional: MySQL 8.0 Database Administrator (1Z0-908), with a companion MySQL 8.0 Database Developer exam (1Z0-909) and a MySQL Implementation Associate (1Z0-922). MySQL credentials, like other product certifications, do not expire. Oracle included MySQL exams in a free-certification promotion for MySQL's 30th anniversary in 2025 — a reminder that Oracle's free-exam windows are recurring, limited-time events rather than permanent policy.

Other areas

Beyond these four, Oracle certifies its business applications (Oracle Cloud Applications) and various platform products. Cloud Applications credentials are reported to carry their own 18-month validity period, distinct from both the OCI and product-cert rules. If your employer runs Oracle's ERP or HCM suites, those tracks may matter to you, but most IT-infrastructure and development candidates concentrate on OCI, Java, Database or MySQL.

The 2026 naming change: why the year disappeared

For years, OCI certifications carried the calendar year in the title — "OCI 2023 Architect Associate", for example. In 2026 Oracle announced that certification titles and logos no longer include the year: the credential is now simply "OCI Architect Associate", with exam content refreshed regularly while the name stays evergreen.

Two practical consequences:

  1. Exam codes still carry year suffixes (1Z0-1072-25, 1Z0-1072-26), and yearly-coded exams still retire on a rolling basis. The name on your certificate is stable; the exam you book is version-specific.
  2. Older year-branded titles on CVs and job adverts are not different certifications — an "OCI 2023 Architect Associate" and today's "OCI Architect Associate" are the same credential line, earned against different exam versions.

If you encounter an old exam code in study materials, check whether it is still the live version before building a study plan around it.

How much do Oracle certifications cost?

As of 2026, Oracle's published pricing follows a tier structure (all figures USD list prices that vary by country, region and local taxes):

TierTypical priceExamples
Foundational OCI certificationsFree (training, practice exam and exam attempt)OCI Foundations Associate
Junior/entry associate exams$95A small set of entry-level exams (Oracle has not published a definitive 2026 list — check the exam page)
Core OCI Associate/Professional and product exams$245OCI Architect Associate and Professional, Java SE 21 (1Z0-830), Database SQL (1Z0-071), Database Administration (1Z0-082/083), 23ai (1Z0-182), MySQL (1Z0-908)
Oracle Certified MasterConsiderably more (performance-based)OCM exams

The learning paths on Oracle MyLearn are free for these certifications — you pay for the exam attempt, not the course. An exam purchase must typically be scheduled within six months. Because promotions come and go and regional pricing differs, always confirm the current fee on the specific exam's page at education.oracle.com before budgeting.

Whether those fees are money well spent is a genuinely separate question, and we give it a full cost-versus-value treatment in Is Oracle certification worth it?

Do Oracle certifications expire?

This is the single most misunderstood rule in the programme, because the answer depends on the track:

  • OCI cloud certifications expire 24 months after you earn them. To stay certified, you pass the then-current version of the exam. There is no free online renewal assessment of the kind some other cloud vendors offer — recertification means retaking the exam.
  • Java, Oracle Database and MySQL certifications do not expire. Oracle retires old exams — you can no longer sit the Java 11 exam, for instance — but a credential you earned remains yours indefinitely.
  • Oracle Cloud Applications certifications are reported to follow their own 18-month validity cycle.

The logic is straightforward once you see it: cloud platforms change continuously, so cloud credentials carry a shelf life; product certifications attach to a specific product version, so they stay valid while simply becoming dated as newer versions ship. A Database Administration 2019 Certified Professional title never lapses, but employers will read it as a 19c-era credential.

One related question candidates ask: when a new year's OCI exam code appears, must you retake immediately? No — your credential runs its full 24 months regardless of how many exam refreshes happen in between. You only face the current exam version when your own renewal comes due.

How Oracle exams are delivered

All the mainstream written exams are multiple-choice, computer-delivered tests administered through Oracle University with Pearson VUE. You can take them online from home under remote proctoring — with the usual requirements around a quiet room, identity checks and a webcam — or at a Pearson VUE test centre. Master-level exams differ: they are performance-based, assessed on tasks you complete rather than questions you answer.

Formats vary by exam. To take the one entry-level example with consistently reported figures: the Oracle Database SQL Certified Associate (1Z0-071) runs 63 multiple-choice questions in 120 minutes with a 63% passing score. Other exams differ in length, time and threshold, and for several current exams the published details have shifted between versions — so treat any format numbers you find in third-party material as provisional and confirm them on the official exam page. How demanding the exams feel in practice, and which families are hardest, is covered separately in how hard are Oracle certification exams?

Common misconceptions worth clearing up early

New candidates run into the same handful of wrong assumptions. Clearing them up now will save you from planning around outdated information.

"I need to pass an OCA exam before the Java OCP." Not any more. The two-step OCA-then-OCP Java path ended in the Java 11 era; the current Java SE 21 exam (1Z0-830) awards Professional status directly.

"Oracle DBA certification is one path." There are currently two parallel routes: the two-exam 19c Administration 2019 track and the one-exam 23ai Associate. Neither has been retired in favour of the other as of 2026.

"All Oracle certifications expire." Only the cloud ones do (24 months for OCI). Java, Database and MySQL credentials are permanent.

"The training costs extra." Oracle's learning paths on MyLearn are free for its certification exams; the fee is for the exam attempt.

"Free Oracle certifications are always free." The foundational OCI certifications are stated as free, but Oracle's broader free-exam windows — such as the 2025 Race to Certification and the MySQL anniversary promotion — are limited-time offers. If you see "free Oracle exam" claims, check the dates.

"A 2023-coded exam and a 2026-coded exam are different certifications." They are versions of the same credential; the 2026 rebrand removed years from titles precisely to make that clearer.

A quick orientation for three common starting points

To make the map concrete, here is how the structure looks from three typical vantage points. These are orientations, not recommendations — the ranking-and-choosing work is done in our best Oracle certifications comparison.

A support analyst curious about cloud. The relevant track is OCI. The free Foundations Associate is the designed entry point, with role-based Associate exams above it and Professional exams above those; everything in this track renews on a 24-month cycle.

A developer who writes Java daily. The relevant track is Java SE, and it is unusually simple: one current flagship exam (1Z0-830, Java 21) that grants OCP directly and never expires.

A database analyst working with SQL. The relevant track is Oracle Database, entered through the SQL Certified Associate (1Z0-071), with the two administration routes (19c or 23ai) sitting above it for those heading toward administration work.

Whichever vantage point is yours, the sequencing question — what to stack after your first credential, and in what order for a DBA, developer or cloud career — is mapped in the Oracle certification career path guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official certification for PostgreSQL from Oracle or anyone else?

Not from Oracle, and notably not from the PostgreSQL project itself either — the PostgreSQL Global Development Group issues no official certification. The best-known vendor credential in that ecosystem comes from EDB (EnterpriseDB). Oracle's own open-source database certification is the MySQL track.

Can I take Oracle exams from home?

Yes. Oracle exams are delivered via Oracle University with Pearson VUE, and online proctored delivery from home is available alongside test centres.

Does Oracle publish the pass rates for its exams?

Oracle does not publish pass rates, and any site claiming to know them is guessing. What Oracle does publish is each exam's passing score and objectives, on the exam's official page.

Where do free sample questions fit into all this?

Once you have picked a track and read the official objectives, sample questions help you check how the exam actually phrases things. You can browse Oracle exam pages on ExamPractice for free sample practice questions across the OCI, Java and Database exams, with fuller question sets and a timed simulation mode available to subscribers.

Where to go from here

You now have the whole map: four levels from Foundations to Master, four major tracks across cloud, Java, database and MySQL, a $0-to-$245 fee structure with a pricier Master tier, and the crucial split between expiring cloud credentials and permanent product ones. The programme rewards candidates who pick one track deliberately rather than collecting credentials at random.

Your next step depends on what you are missing. If you know your technology area, go straight to that track's guide — OCI, Java or Database — for the exam-level detail this overview deliberately left out. If you are still weighing tracks against each other, the best Oracle certifications comparison ranks them by role and market demand. And whenever a specific fee, format or prerequisite matters to your plan, confirm it on the exam's page at education.oracle.com — those details move faster than any guide.

Exam facts in this guide were checked against official certification-provider pages on . Fees, exam codes and policies change — confirm on the provider’s own site before you book.
