What makes a networking exam genuinely hard?

Before ranking anything, it helps to separate four different kinds of difficulty, because candidates routinely prepare for the wrong one.

Format difficulty. A multiple-choice exam lets you reason from recognition. A hands-on lab exam gives you a broken or half-built network and a clock. Stakes: US $400 for the written plus $1,600 per lab attempt, unrefunded, with travel on top; most candidates report needing more than one lab attempt, though no official pass-rate figures exist to quantify it. Opacity: no published scoring detail. Cisco suggests five to seven years of experience before attempting it, and there are no formal prerequisites beyond the qualifying exam — nothing stops an unprepared candidate from donating $1,600 to find out why the suggestion exists.

Which CCIE track is hardest is largely a function of your background: each lab examines the depth of its own architecture, so the "hardest" track is invariably the one furthest from your day job. Juniper's Juniper Networks Certified Internet Expert (JNCIE) certifications and the Certified Wireless Network Expert (CWNE) from CWNP are the CCIE's peers at the top of the difficulty ladder in their respective domains — service-provider and enterprise routing on Juniper's side, enterprise Wi-Fi on CWNP's. Debates about CCIE versus JNCIE difficulty are a staple of networking forums, but they resist a factual answer: difficulty at this tier depends overwhelmingly on which vendor's operating systems and design philosophies you already live in. This article does not quote formats, fees, or requirements for these programmes — verify the current details on Juniper's and CWNP's official certification pages before planning an attempt, because expert-track structures change and second-hand summaries age badly. The honest comparative claim is simply this: they belong in the same tier as the CCIE, and none of them is meaningfully "easier" for a candidate starting from zero on that vendor's ecosystem.

CCDE — expert difficulty without a configuration lab

Cisco's design-expert certification, the CCDE, sits alongside the CCIE tracks at expert level but tests a different muscle: network design judgement rather than configuration speed. For engineers whose strength is architecture — trade-off analysis, requirements interpretation, technology selection — the CCDE can be the more natural expert summit, and for CLI-fluent implementers it can be the more alien one. Treat it as a lateral peak, not a lower one.

Tier 2: the professional gauntlet — CCNP tracks

Every Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification requires two exams: a 120-minute core (US $400) and a 90-minute concentration of your choice (US $300) — roughly $700 minimum per track, varying by region. There are no formal prerequisites (the "CCNA first" rule died in the February 2020 restructure), Cisco suggests three to five years of experience, and none of the written exams publishes a question count or passing score.   • CCNP Enterprise (350-401 ENCOR + concentration). The most-attempted track and the broadest core. How the hardest exams punish the wrong preparation

Pay varies enormously with location, experience, and role, and the increment between professional and expert certification is smaller in that dataset than the difficulty gap between the exams. If your value is design, the CCDE is the harder-than-it-looks alternative.
