Certifications That Can Help You Become a Data Engineer

Compare Google Professional Data Engineer, AWS DEA-C01, Databricks and SnowPro certifications — costs, formats, renewal rules and a sensible sequence.

Data engineering certifications suffer from unusually fast version churn, and picking one in 2026 means picking the current one. SnowPro Core is now COF-C03, not the COF-C02 that most tutorials still reference. Databricks rewrote its Data Engineer Associate exam guide in May 2026 and its Professional guide in July 2026. Google notes that its Professional Data Engineer exam is being updated to reflect product renames. Study the wrong version and you will drill on retired objectives.

So before comparing prestige or difficulty, this guide anchors on what is actually examinable as of August 2026 across the four platforms that dominate data engineering hiring — Google Cloud, AWS, Databricks and Snowflake — plus dbt for the analytics-engineering boundary. It is written for analysts and developers moving toward the pipeline-and-platform side of data work. If your goal is the BI and analysis side — SQL reporting, dashboards, stakeholder analytics — that is a different credential set, covered in the data analyst certification path.

What a data engineering certification actually has to prove

Data engineers build and operate the systems that move data: ingestion from sources, transformation and modelling, orchestration, storage and governance, and increasingly the CI/CD and monitoring around all of it. A worthwhile certification therefore tests platform-specific pipeline skills — not SQL trivia and not machine-learning modelling.

None of the major data engineering exams enforces prerequisites, but all of them assume real experience: AWS recommends 2–3 years of data engineering work for its associate exam, Google recommends 3+ years of industry experience including a year on Google Cloud, and Snowflake recommends 6+ months of hands-on Snowflake use even at Core level. Treat those recommendations as an honest difficulty rating rather than a gate. An analyst with strong SQL and a year of warehouse work is closer than they think; a developer with no data exposure should build a small pipeline project before booking anything.

The certifications, platform by platform

Google Professional Data Engineer

Google Cloud's Professional Data Engineer is the longest-established cloud data engineering credential and remains the broadest test of the discipline: designing data processing systems, operationalising pipelines, and governance on Google Cloud. The exam runs 40–50 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions over 2 hours, costs $200 USD plus applicable tax, and is delivered online proctored or at Pearson VUE centres. Google does not publish a passing score.

Two things distinguish it. First, validity is only 2 years, but Google is the sole provider here with a cheaper renewal route: a $100, 1-hour, 20-question renewal exam in the eligibility window (or a course-based renewal path granting one year). Second, Google flags that the exam will be updated for recent product rebranding — download the current exam guide from cloud.google.com before you build a study plan. Best for: engineers in Google Cloud shops, and candidates who want the most role-shaped (rather than product-shaped) data engineering exam.

AWS Certified Data Engineer – Associate (DEA-C01)

AWS's DEA-C01 launched in 2024 as the effective successor to the retired Data Analytics Specialty, and it is the cheapest ticket in this comparison at $150 USD. Format: 65 multiple-choice and multiple-response questions in 130 minutes, at a test centre or online proctored. There are no labs. AWS recommends 2–3 years of data engineering experience and 1–2 years hands-on with AWS.

Its practical advantages are AWS's ecosystem ones: a 3-year validity period (longest here), and a 50% discount voucher for your next exam once you hold any active AWS certification — which matters if you plan to stack a cloud architecture or DevOps credential later. Best for: anyone whose employer or target employers run on AWS — which, by market share, is the safest default when you have no signal either way.

Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate and Professional

Databricks skills — Spark, the lakehouse, Delta-based pipelines — appear in a growing share of data engineering adverts, and Databricks runs a genuine two-tier track. The Associate exam (guide refreshed May 2026) is 45 scored multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, $200 USD, with content in SQL where possible and otherwise Python. Its refreshed domains reveal where the platform is heading: Data Ingestion and Loading (21%), Data Transformation and Modeling (22%), Lakeflow Jobs (16%), Governance & Security (15%), CI/CD (10%), Troubleshooting/Monitoring/Optimisation (10%), Platform (6%). Note that orchestration and CI/CD now carry real weight — this is no longer a notebooks-and-queries exam.

The Professional exam (guide updated July 2026) is 59 scored questions in 120 minutes, also $200, with code in Python and SQL. There is no formal requirement to pass the Associate first. Both certifications expire after 2 years — a common misconception is that they never do — and recertification means retaking the current exam version at full price. Retakes carry a mandatory 14-day wait and full fee each time, with no free-retake vouchers; the quarterly Databricks Learning Festival (January, April, July, October) offers 50% certification discounts worth planning around. Databricks does not publish passing scores, so ignore any prep site quoting one. Objectives and sample questions for the Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate and the Databricks Certified Data Engineer Professional are worth reviewing before you choose a tier.

Best for: engineers in Spark/lakehouse environments, and analysts levelling up from SQL into engineered pipelines — the Associate's SQL-first content lowers the entry barrier.

SnowPro Core (COF-C03) and SnowPro Advanced: Data Engineer (DEA-C02)

Snowflake's ladder starts with SnowPro Core — current version COF-C03 — at $175 USD per attempt (exams delivered in India get a 20% regional discount). Snowflake recommends 6+ months of hands-on experience; the exam is online proctored, and Snowflake's official page does not publish the question count or passing threshold, so treat third-party figures cautiously. Above Core sit the Advanced exams at $375 each, including SnowPro Advanced: Data Engineer (DEA-C02) — the Snowflake-native data engineering credential.

All SnowPro certifications are valid for 2 years, with a renewal system worth understanding: passing an equal-or-higher SnowPro exam (or completing an eligible instructor-led course) before expiry renews your certification, and the highest certification renews all active lower ones. There are no extensions after expiry.

Best for: engineers in Snowflake-centred warehouses. Take Core only when Snowflake is genuinely your platform — it is a platform certification, not a general data engineering one.

dbt Certified Analytics Engineer — the transformation-layer credential

dbt sits at the boundary between analytics and engineering, and the dbt Certified Analytics Engineer exam ($200 USD, 2 hours, online proctored via Talview, covering dbt version 1.11 as of August 2026) certifies the transformation-and-modelling layer many modern teams hire for. dbt Labs recommends SQL proficiency and 6+ months working with dbt. It pairs naturally with a warehouse certification (Snowflake or Databricks) rather than replacing a data engineering one. dbt Labs has not published the exam's validity period on the pages we could verify — check the certification FAQ before assuming it matches the 2-year norm.

No single exam wins. The honest recommendation is circumstantial: certify on the platform your target employers run.

A realistic sequence for career changers

A worked example. An analyst with two years of SQL reporting experience, moving into engineering at a company on AWS with a Snowflake warehouse:

  1. Months 1–2: build before certifying. Stand up a small end-to-end pipeline — scheduled ingestion, transformation, a modelled output table. Certifications confirm skills; they do not create the portfolio conversation in interviews.
  2. Months 2–4: first certification on the dominant platform. Here, AWS DEA-C01: cheapest, longest validity, and it forces breadth across ingestion, orchestration and governance rather than warehouse queries alone.
  3. Months 5–7: warehouse-native credential. SnowPro Core, timed so both certifications are active together during the job hunt.
  4. Later, in role: Databricks Associate or the dbt certification if the stack demands it, and the Databricks Professional or SnowPro Advanced: Data Engineer once you are operating production pipelines daily. Stacking more than two certifications before landing the role has sharply diminishing returns — spend that time on the portfolio instead.

For preparation, work from the official exam guide, then use practice questions diagnostically rather than as content to memorise: sit a timed set, break the results down by domain, and put your remaining study weeks into the weakest two domains. Once your domain scores level out, a full-length timed practice-test simulation is a sensible final benchmark before you pay a registration fee — particularly for Databricks, where a failed attempt means a 14-day wait and another $200.

What these certifications will not do

They will not substitute for demonstrable pipeline work; hiring managers for engineering roles probe design decisions, not certificate lists. They will not certify you "for life" — every credential above expires in 2–3 years, and only Google offers a discounted renewal. And they will not, by themselves, command a salary premium: no reputable dated source ties a specific pay uplift to any individual data engineering certification. For overall market context, Glassdoor (US, accessed August 2026) lists an average data engineer salary of $134,336 and $176,482 for senior data engineers, while Salary.com reports $123,053 (as of August 2026) — self-reported and US-specific figures; pay varies substantially by location, experience and company.

Choosing your first data engineering exam

Match the certification to the stack in front of you: AWS DEA-C01 as the cost-effective default in AWS environments, Google Professional Data Engineer for GCP shops and the broadest role coverage, Databricks Associate where Spark and the lakehouse dominate, SnowPro Core where Snowflake does, and dbt for the transformation layer on top. Verify the current exam version and fee on the provider's official page the week you register — in this field more than any other, last year's exam guide is already wrong.
