Can You Change Your Certification Exam Date?

Yes — every major certification programme lets you move a booked exam, and in most cases it costs nothing, provided you act before a deadline. Miss that deadline and the picture flips abruptly: the industry default is that changes inside 24 hours of the appointment are impossible, and a no-show forfeits your entire fee or voucher. So the honest answer to "can I change my exam date?" is almost always "yes — but check the clock first."

The 24-hour rule: the default across the industry

Most of the big programmes — CompTIA, Microsoft, AWS, Cisco, ISC2 and PMI — deliver exams through Pearson VUE, and the dominant policy pattern is simple:

• More than 24 hours before your appointment: you can reschedule (and usually cancel) without penalty.
• Inside 24 hours: the change window has closed, and failing to attend forfeits the full exam fee, including any voucher used to book.

CompTIA applies exactly this rule for in-person test-centre appointments, and notably relaxes it for online delivery: OnVUE online-proctored CompTIA exams can be rescheduled or cancelled at any time before the exam starts. Microsoft requires at least 24 hours' notice or the fee — and any company-provided voucher — is forfeited. AWS likewise allows rescheduling up to 24 hours before the exam and forfeits the full fee for later cancellations, though it may make exceptions for documented illness or emergency.

Two wrinkles are worth flagging even inside this common pattern:

• AWS caps how often you can move one booking. Each appointment can be rescheduled at most twice; a third change means cancelling and rebooking from scratch.
• Accommodated and promotional bookings can carry longer notice periods. CompTIA exams booked with testing accommodations need 3 days' cancellation notice, and some free or promotional Microsoft exam offers require six or more business days' notice to avoid a rescheduling fee. Programmes that charge for changes regardless of notice

Not every provider follows the free-until-24-hours model. Two significant exceptions:

ISC2 (CISSP, CCSP, SSCP, CC). ISC2 charges administrative fees whatever your notice: US$50 to reschedule and US$100 to cancel. Against a US$749 CISSP exam fee, a $50 move is a minor cost — but it means a speculative booking is never entirely free to unwind.

PMI (PMP). PMI uses a three-tier structure rather than a single deadline. More than 30 days before the appointment, changes are free. Within 30 days, rescheduling or cancelling costs US$70. Within 48 hours of the appointment, you cannot reschedule or cancel at all — a no-show at that point forfeits the full fee.

Rescheduling vs cancelling: they are not the same decision

Rescheduling moves your existing booking — and your existing payment — to a new slot. Cancelling dissolves the booking, and what happens to your money then depends on the provider's refund terms and on how you paid. The distinction matters most when a voucher is involved: a voucher is prepayment rather than an appointment, and a late cancellation usually forfeits the voucher itself. CompTIA vouchers are typically valid for 12 months from purchase with no extension for non-use, so cancelling an exam does not stop the voucher's clock.

The practical rule: if there is any realistic chance you will still sit the exam, reschedule rather than cancel — you keep your payment attached to a live booking and lose nothing.
