Passing AZ-104 puts you in an unusually strong position, because Azure Administrator Associate is the mandatory prerequisite for Microsoft's Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification and one of the qualifying routes into DevOps Engineer Expert. In other words, the certification you already hold is the key that unlocks both of Microsoft's expert-level Azure credentials. The real question is not "am I ready for the next level?" but "which of the three classic directions — architecture, DevOps or security — matches the work I want to be doing in two years?"
Short answer: for most AZ-104 holders, AZ-305 (Azure Solutions Architect Expert) is the natural next step, because your existing certification satisfies its prerequisite and the design content builds directly on administrator knowledge. Choose AZ-400 (DevOps Engineer Expert) instead if your daily work already involves pipelines, source control and automation. The traditional security route, AZ-500, retires on 31 August 2026 and should no longer be your target — security-minded admins should look at SC-200, SC-300 and the successor credential Microsoft is introducing.

The three directions open to a certified Azure administrator
Microsoft's role-based portfolio gives an AZ-104 holder three coherent continuations:
Architecture — AZ-305, Designing Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions, leading to Azure Solutions Architect Expert.
DevOps — AZ-400, Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions, leading to DevOps Engineer Expert.

Route 1: AZ-305 and the Solutions Architect Expert title
Why AZ-305 is the default recommendation
AZ-305 examines design rather than implementation: designing identity, governance and monitoring solutions; data storage solutions; business continuity solutions; and infrastructure solutions. As an administrator you have spent your AZ-104 preparation deploying compute, storage, networking and governance controls — AZ-305 asks you to step back and decide which of those services a business scenario calls for, and why.
That makes the knowledge transfer from AZ-104 unusually high. You are not learning a new toolset; you are learning to justify trade-offs between tools you already operate. A crucial mechanic that trips people up: passing the AZ-305 exam alone does not award the Solutions Architect Expert certification. Microsoft only issues the certification to candidates who also hold a current Azure Administrator Associate. Since you already hold AZ-104, one exam stands between you and the expert title — but keep your AZ-104 renewed (it expires after 12 months, with a free, open-book online renewal assessment) so the prerequisite stays valid.
Who should pick this route
Choose AZ-305 if you enjoy the "why" conversations — cost versus resilience, managed service versus IaaS, region pairs and recovery objectives — and want to move towards solution design, pre-sales or cloud consultancy. Route 2: AZ-400 and the DevOps Engineer Expert title
What AZ-400 actually tests
AZ-400, Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions, covers DevOps processes and communications, source control strategy, build and release pipelines, a security and compliance plan, and an instrumentation strategy — across both GitHub and Azure DevOps. It is less about running Azure resources and more about the machinery that delivers software onto them.
The prerequisite rule matters here too: DevOps Engineer Expert requires either Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate. With AZ-204 retired as of mid-2026, AZ-104 is now the practical entry route for new candidates — another way your existing certification has quietly become more valuable. Existing AZ-204 holders' certifications still count while valid, but nobody new can take that door.
Who should pick this route
Be honest about your current exposure. AZ-400 rewards people who already write YAML pipelines, review pull requests and think about deployment rings. If your administration work is mostly portal-and-policy and you have never owned a release pipeline, the exam will feel like a different profession — because it is. In that case, either build hands-on CI/CD experience first or take the architecture route now and revisit DevOps later.
If pipelines are already your day job, this is arguably the stronger pick: it certifies what you do rather than what you might do. Route 3: security — a path that changed in 2026
For years the standard advice was "admin to AZ-500". That advice is now out of date. Microsoft's official page states that the Azure Security Engineer Associate certification, its exam and its renewal assessments retire on 31 August 2026 — after which it can no longer be earned or renewed. Recommending AZ-500 as a target today would be pointing you at a closing door; secondary sources report that a successor exam (SC-500, for a cloud and AI security engineer credential) is arriving, but its official details were still emerging at the time of writing, so confirm the current state on Microsoft Learn before committing.
What remains fully current for a security-minded administrator:
SC-200 (Security Operations Analyst Associate) — managing a security operations environment, responding to incidents and threat hunting with Microsoft Defender XDR, Sentinel and KQL. The strongest pick if you want blue-team operational work.
SC-300 (Identity and Access Administrator Associate) — Microsoft Entra-centred identity, authentication, workload identities and identity governance. A natural deepening of the identity-and-governance domain you already studied for AZ-104, and identity is where a large share of real Azure security incidents begin.
Neither has formal prerequisites, both sit at the same associate tier as AZ-104 with the same annual free renewal, and both keep you employable in security while the successor to AZ-500 settles. Treat the security route as "SC-200 or SC-300 now, the new security engineer credential once its official page is live".

A decision framework: three questions to settle it
What does your calendar say? Look at your last month of work. Mostly designing, advising or writing proposals → AZ-305. Mostly pipelines, releases and automation → AZ-400. Mostly incidents, access reviews and conditional access policies → SC-200 or SC-300.
What does your target job advert say? Pull five adverts for the role you want in 18 months. Count which certifications and tools appear. Adverts asking for "Azure architecture" and stakeholder skills point to AZ-305; adverts full of GitHub Actions, Terraform and Kubernetes point to AZ-400 plus the wider DevOps toolbelt; adverts naming Sentinel and Entra point to the SC track.
How much new tooling can you absorb right now? AZ-305 requires the least new surface area for an administrator; AZ-400 the most. If you have limited study time this quarter, sequencing AZ-305 first and AZ-400 later is a legitimate plan — many professionals eventually hold both expert certifications, since each is a single exam once AZ-104 is in hand.
A realistic scenario: an administrator with two years of Azure operations experience, comfortable with governance and networking but with no pipeline ownership, wants an architect title eventually. The efficient sequence is AZ-305 next (one exam to an expert credential), then AZ-700 or AZ-400 the following year depending on whether their role tilts towards infrastructure or delivery. Chasing AZ-400 first would mean months of learning CI/CD tooling before any credential payoff.
Don't overlook the sideways moves
An expert badge is not always the highest-value next exam. Two associate-level options deserve honest consideration:
AZ-700 (Azure Network Engineer Associate) — core networking infrastructure, connectivity, application delivery, private access and network security. If hybrid connectivity and routing are the hardest part of your job, this depth pays off daily in a way a design certification may not.
SC-300 — as above, the identity deep-dive. Identity administration is a distinct and durable specialism.
