What Certification Should You Take After AWS Cloud Practitioner?

You passed the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02), you are holding a 50% discount voucher that expires in a year, and AWS now offers five different associate-level exams — so "just do Solutions Architect next" is no longer the automatic answer it was when there were only three.

First, know what you're choosing between

As of August 2026, AWS's associate tier contains five certifications, all $150 USD (regional pricing varies), all 65 questions, all with a scaled passing score of 720, all valid for three years, and none with formal prerequisites:

Two portfolio changes trip people up. First, the SysOps Administrator – Associate was not retired — it was renamed and updated: SOA-C02's last day was 29 September 2025, and the renamed AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate (SOA-C03) went live on 30 September 2025. Older advice recommending "SysOps" now means CloudOps. Second, the Machine Learning Engineer exam is being updated: MLA-C02 registration opens 1 September 2026, and the last day to sit MLA-C01 in English is 28 September 2026 — timing that matters if ML is your lane this autumn.

Also worth knowing before you decide: passing CLF-C02 earned you a 50% discount voucher for your next AWS exam, valid for one year. Used on a $150 associate exam it saves $75; if you are confident enough to leap straight to a $300 Professional or Specialty exam later, it saves $150 — but for most people the associate step first is the sound move, and letting the voucher expire unused is the real waste.

Pick by the role you want, not the exam you've heard of

You want architecture, consulting, or you're not sure yet → Solutions Architect – Associate

The SAA-C03 is the broadest of the five: designing resilient, cost-optimised architectures across compute, storage, networking and databases. That breadth is exactly why it suits the undecided — you will touch more of AWS studying for it than for any other associate exam, and the knowledge transfers whichever direction you specialise afterwards. AWS recommends a year of hands-on design experience, but there is no enforced prerequisite; a Cloud Practitioner holder with steady lab time can bridge the gap.

A realistic scenario: an IT support analyst who passed CLF-C02 three months ago, is not yet sure whether cloud operations or architecture is the destination, and can give the exam 8–10 weeks of evening study — SAA-C03 is the right call, because it keeps every later door open and its job-market surface area is the largest.

You write code for a living → Developer – Associate

If your day job (or target job) is building applications — APIs, serverless functions, CI/CD pipelines — the DVA-C02 matches your work far better than SAA does. It goes deeper on development tooling, deployment and debugging on AWS, and shallower on infrastructure design. AWS suggests a year of hands-on AWS development; practically, if you already code, the AWS-specific material is the only new load. A bonus for long-term planners: passing the DevOps Engineer – Professional (DOP-C02) later automatically renews Developer – Associate, so the developer track recertifies itself as you climb.

You run systems today → CloudOps Engineer – Associate

Helpdesk-to-cloud and sysadmin-to-cloud movers often default to SAA when SOA-C03 is the closer fit: monitoring, deployment, operations and troubleshooting — the daily reality of keeping workloads healthy rather than designing them. Note the exam is question-based like the others; the old lab component of the early SysOps exams is long gone from AWS's published format. If your CV says "administrator" and your ambition says "cloud engineer", this is the associate exam that certifies the job you will actually be hired to do first. You work with data → Data Engineer – Associate

The DEA-C01 (launched 2024, effectively replacing the retired Data Analytics – Specialty) covers building and operating data pipelines on AWS. AWS suggests 2–3 years of data engineering experience, which makes it a heavier lift straight after Cloud Practitioner than SAA or DVA — but if you already work in analytics or ETL and CLF-C02 was your AWS orientation, it is the direct route to cloud data engineering roles rather than a detour through architecture.

You're aiming at machine learning → Machine Learning Engineer – Associate (mind the date)

The MLA-C01 validates building and operationalising ML solutions, with AWS suggesting a year of hands-on SageMaker experience. It also uses AWS's newer question types — ordering, matching and case studies — alongside multiple choice, so expect a different exam feel. Timing is the practical issue in 2026: English-language MLA-C01 ends 28 September 2026 with MLA-C02 registration opening 1 September 2026, so decide whether you are sitting the current version promptly or preparing against the new one from the start. Can you skip the associate tier entirely?

Formally, yes — AWS enforces no prerequisites, so nothing stops a Cloud Practitioner holder booking the $300 Solutions Architect – Professional (SAP-C02). Practically, it is a poor idea for almost everyone: the Professional exams are 75 questions over 180 minutes, assume years of hands-on breadth, and pass at a scaled 750. The associate tier exists to be the bridge. One renewal fact worth folding into the decision: your Cloud Practitioner certification is renewed automatically when you pass any associate or professional exam, so the next step you take also resets the three-year clock on the credential you already hold.
