The "best" data engineer certification changed hands three times in the last two years — not because any exam got better, but because the platforms underneath them moved. Snowflake retired the COF-C02 English exam in favour of COF-C03, Databricks rewrote its Data Engineer Associate guide in May 2026 around Lakeflow Jobs and its Data + AI Platform framing, and Google's Professional Data Engineer is mid-way through a product-rebranding update. Any ranking that predates those changes is quietly out of date.

Short answer: for most engineers in 2026, the strongest single pick is the certification that matches the platform your employer (or target employer) actually runs. On AWS-centric stacks that is the AWS Certified Data Engineer – Associate (DEA-C01, $150, valid 3 years). On lakehouse stacks it is the Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate ($200, valid 2 years). Warehouse-first teams point to SnowPro ($175 for Core), and Google Cloud shops to the Professional Data Engineer ($200). There is no universal winner — and this article ranks them by circumstance rather than pretending there is.

This is a comparison, deliberately. If what you want instead is the order to take them in and what to learn before your first attempt, that sequencing lives in our data engineering certification roadmap.

What actually separates these certifications?

Every credential on this list is a proctored multiple-choice exam with no formal prerequisites, available online or at a test centre. What separates them is narrower than vendors admit: platform relevance, price, validity period, and how painful renewal is. As of August 2026 the price ladder runs AWS DEA-C01 at $150, SnowPro Core at $175, then Databricks, Google and dbt at $200, Snowflake Specialty exams at $225, and SnowPro Advanced exams at $375 (all USD, before regional taxes and pricing).

Validity is the quietly decisive factor. AWS gives you three years; Databricks, Snowflake and Google give two. Only Google offers a cheaper renewal route — a $100, one-hour, 20-question renewal exam or a course-based path. Databricks and AWS require retaking the full current exam; Snowflake renews via its Continuing Education programme, where passing an equal-or-higher SnowPro exam before expiry renews your active lower certifications too.

None of these exams publishes a passing score you can rely on: AWS and Snowflake use scaled scoring without a confirmed public threshold, and Databricks and Google simply do not publish one. Treat any "70%" or "750/1000" figure you see on prep forums as unverified.

The rankings, by circumstance

1. AWS Certified Data Engineer – Associate (DEA-C01) — best overall market coverage

AWS remains the most widely deployed cloud, which makes DEA-C01 the safest default when you do not yet know where you will work. The exam runs 65 multiple-choice and multiple-response questions over 130 minutes, costs $150 — the cheapest on this list — and the credential lasts three years, a full year longer than every rival. AWS recommends two to three years of data engineering experience and one to two years hands-on with AWS, though nothing is enforced. Existing AWS certification holders get a 50% discount voucher for subsequent exams, which matters if this is your second AWS credential. One recent quirk worth knowing: AWS now abbreviates service names in questions, with a reference list available through the in-exam Help button.

Choose it if: your stack is AWS, or you want the longest-lived, cheapest credential with the broadest employer recognition. Look elsewhere if your daily work is Spark-on-Databricks or a Snowflake warehouse — a platform-native cert will describe your actual job better.

2. Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate — best for the lakehouse era

The May 2026 exam guide made this a genuinely current credential: domains now include Data Ingestion and Loading (21%), Data Transformation and Modeling (22%), Lakeflow Jobs (16%), Governance & Security (15%), CI/CD (10%), Troubleshooting/Monitoring/Optimisation (10%) and Platform (6%). It is 45 scored multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, $200 per attempt, with content in SQL where possible and otherwise Python. Validity is two years, and recertification means retaking the current exam at full price — there are no free retakes, and a failed attempt triggers a mandatory 14-day wait. The quarterly Databricks Learning Festival (January, April, July, October) offers 50% certification discounts, which effectively halves the real cost for anyone who can plan a quarter ahead.

A common belief worth killing: Databricks certifications do not last forever, and Databricks does not publish a passing percentage. Both claims circulate widely and both are wrong or unverifiable.

Choose it if: your team runs Databricks or you are targeting lakehouse-heavy employers. For where the Professional tier and the ML and GenAI tracks fit around it, see Databricks certifications explained; for a ranked view within the Databricks portfolio specifically, our guide to the best Databricks certifications for data engineers goes deeper than this article can.

3. Google Professional Data Engineer — best professional-level signal

Google skips the associate tier entirely for this role: the Professional Data Engineer is a design-and-architecture exam of 40–50 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions over two hours, at $200. Google recommends three or more years of industry experience including a year on Google Cloud. Its standout feature is renewal: within the eligibility window you can sit a $100, one-hour, 20-question renewal exam, or complete designated Google Skills courses (that path grants one year of validity). No other vendor here makes staying certified that cheap. One caveat as of August 2026 — Google notes the exam will soon be updated for product renames, so check the current official exam guide for up-to-date product names before booking.

Choose it if: you work in a GCP shop or want a professional-tier credential without an associate stepping stone. Skip it if you have never touched Google Cloud; the recommended experience is recommended for a reason.

4. SnowPro Core (COF-C03) and the Snowflake ladder — best for warehouse-first teams

Snowflake's entry point is SnowPro Core, now in its COF-C03 version, at $175 per attempt (every attempt is full price; exams delivered in India get a 20% discount). Snowflake recommends six or more months of hands-on experience, and the exam is online-proctored with a Pearson VUE test-centre option. Snowflake has not published the question count or duration for COF-C03 on its certification page, so ignore the "100 questions, 115 minutes" figures secondary sites repeat.

For data engineers specifically, Core is the doorway rather than the destination: the SnowPro Advanced: Data Engineer (DEA-C02) sits above it at $375, in a lineup of seven Advanced exams and three Specialty exams ($225). Snowflake's renewal mechanics reward climbing — a higher certification renews your active lower ones. The full ladder and how the credentials relate is mapped in Snowflake certifications explained, and exam-level detail on Core lives in our SnowPro Core certification guide.

Choose it if: Snowflake is your warehouse and your employer values platform-certified staff. Skip Core if you already have deep Snowflake experience and your goal is the Advanced Data Engineer credential — check that exam's own prerequisite page before assuming Core is required.

5. dbt Analytics Engineering Certification — best for the transformation layer

If your job is models, tests and orchestration in dbt rather than cluster management, the dbt Certified Analytics Engineer is the closest fit on this list. It is a two-hour, $200 exam delivered via Talview, currently covering dbt version 1.11, with SQL proficiency and six-plus months of dbt experience recommended. dbt Labs now also offers an Architect certification at the same price. Be aware that dbt Labs has not confirmed the exam's question count or a validity period on the official pages we checked — verify both on dbt Labs' certification FAQ before you plan renewal budgets around it.

Choose it if: your title is or is becoming "analytics engineer". It complements, rather than replaces, a cloud or platform certification.

Where does Microsoft fit?

Microsoft's data engineering credentials — the Fabric-era DP-700 exam and the earlier Azure-focused DP-203 — are relevant for Azure shops, but they sat outside this research cycle's verified fact set, so we will not quote formats or fees here; confirm current details on Microsoft Learn. If you are gauging your readiness for the Azure track, ExamPractice hosts DP-203 Data Engineering on Microsoft Azure practice questions alongside its other exam pages.

A three-question decision framework

You can settle this choice in minutes if you answer honestly:

  1. What does your target stack run? Certifications are strongest as evidence of platform fluency. If the jobs you want list Databricks, an AWS badge is second-best, and vice versa. Pull five job adverts for roles you actually want and count the platform mentions — that tally outranks any internet ranking, including this one.
  2. How much recertification friction will you tolerate? If you hate re-examining, AWS's three-year validity and Google's $100 renewal exam are the low-friction options. Databricks and Snowflake both put you back in a proctored seat within two years (though Snowflake lets a higher exam do double duty).
  3. Are you buying a signal or a syllabus? If you mainly need structured learning, the Databricks and Google exams have the most current, opinionated content — Databricks' May 2026 guide in particular reflects how modern pipelines are actually built. If you mainly need a CV keyword, match the keyword employers in your market search for.

A realistic scenario: a backend developer with strong SQL, employed at a company migrating its warehouse to Snowflake, gains more from SnowPro Core this quarter than from a "higher-ranked" AWS cert — the Snowflake badge maps to the migration project she can volunteer for now. Rankings are generic; leverage is specific.

Do these certifications move salaries?

Treat certification-to-salary claims with suspicion. Glassdoor (US, accessed August 2026) lists the average Data Engineer salary at $134,336 and Senior Data Engineer at $176,482; Salary.com (US, as of 1 August 2026) puts the average at $123,053. No reputable, dated source ties a specific premium to any individual certification, so any "certified engineers earn 20% more" figure you encounter is marketing. Pay varies substantially by location, experience and role; certifications influence which interviews you get more reliably than what you are paid once hired.

Frequently asked questions

Which data engineer certification should I take first if I have no cloud experience?

Start with the platform you can get hands-on access to — the recommended-experience lines above are the real prerequisite. If nothing in your environment forces a choice, AWS DEA-C01 is the cheapest, longest-valid, most broadly recognised entry, though AWS suggests one to two years of hands-on AWS use before sitting it. The staged version of this answer is the data engineering certification roadmap.

Can I take all of these exams online from home?

Yes. Every exam on this list offers online proctoring, and Databricks, AWS, Google and Snowflake also offer test-centre delivery.

Are Databricks or Snowflake exams harder than the cloud-vendor ones?

No provider publishes pass rates or difficulty statistics, so honest comparisons come down to format and scope. We break down the Databricks question in how hard is the Databricks certification exam, and the Snowflake one in how hard is the SnowPro Core exam.

Is it worth holding certifications from two vendors?

Sometimes — typically one cloud certification plus one platform certification (for example AWS plus Databricks) when your stack genuinely spans both. Two certs on platforms you never touch is CV decoration; budget the second exam fee only after the first credential is earning you interviews.

Picking your exam, not the internet's

Ranked lists flatter whichever platform is loudest this year. The durable answer: certify on the platform your work runs on, at the level your experience supports, with eyes open about the two-to-three-year renewal clock you are starting. Before you pay a registration fee, benchmark yourself — work through free sample questions for your shortlisted exam and, closer to the date, a timed simulation to expose weak domains while they are still cheap to fix. ExamPractice's certification exams directory covers the AWS Certified Data Engineer Associate, the Google Professional Data Engineer and the Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate, with free samples to start from.
