Best Certifications for Platform Engineers

The certification stack for platform engineering — CKA, CKS, Terraform and cloud architecture credentials mapped to the layers of an internal developer platform.

There is no such thing as a "Certified Platform Engineer" credential with real market weight — and that absence is the first thing to understand about certifying for this role. Platform engineering grew out of DevOps as a product discipline: instead of automating delivery for one team, you build the internal developer platform (IDP) — the paved roads, golden paths and self-service tooling — that every product team in the company builds on. Because the role is a composite, the credential strategy is a composite too: you assemble a stack of certifications that mirrors the stack you will operate.

Short answer: the strongest certification stack for a platform engineer in 2026 is the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) as the core, the Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS) as the differentiator, the HashiCorp Terraform Associate for the infrastructure-as-code layer, and one cloud architecture credential — such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate — matched to your employer's provider. Everything else is optional garnish.

This article maps certifications to the layers of the platform itself. It is deliberately not a general DevOps ranking — if your goal is a delivery-pipeline role rather than building the platform underneath one, follow the staged DevOps engineer certification path instead.

How employers actually evaluate platform engineering candidates

Job adverts for platform engineers rarely name certifications as hard requirements. What they list is the platform's bill of materials: Kubernetes, Terraform, a cloud provider, CI/CD tooling, security and policy controls, and increasingly an IDP portal layer. Certifications enter the picture as tie-breakers and screening shortcuts — proof that your Kubernetes claim survives a proctored terminal, or that your Terraform is more than copy-pasted modules.

That leads to a simple selection principle: certify each layer once, with the most hands-on exam available for that layer, and let experience cover the rest. Hands-on matters more here than in almost any other role, because platform engineers are hired to be the people others escalate to. A multiple-choice cloud badge says you can recognise the right answer; a performance-based Kubernetes exam says you can produce it at a terminal under time pressure. Where both kinds exist for a layer, choose the hands-on one.

Layer 1: the cluster — CKA is the non-negotiable core

Nearly every modern IDP runs on Kubernetes, which makes the Certified Kubernetes Administrator the closest thing platform engineering has to a signature credential. It is run by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) through the Linux Foundation, and it is performance-based: two hours of live tasks on real clusters over a remote terminal, proctored via PSI Bridge, with a passing score of 66%. As of August 2026 the exam tracks Kubernetes v1.35, and the environment is updated within four to eight weeks of each release — so your credential certifies current Kubernetes, not a snapshot.

The February 2025 curriculum revision made the CKA even more platform-shaped. The updated competencies read like an IDP builder's backlog: Gateway API alongside Ingress, Helm and Kustomize for templating, configuring and troubleshooting CRI, CSI and CNI integrations, dynamic volume provisioning, and Pod Security Standards. Domain weighting rewards operators — Troubleshooting alone carries 30%, and Cluster Architecture, Installation and Configuration another 25%.

Commercially: $445 USD exam-only as of 2026, with a 12-month eligibility window, one free retake and two sessions on the killer.sh simulator included; the certification is valid for two years and renews only by retaking the current exam. The Linux Foundation discounts frequently, and a three-exam CKA/CKAD/CKS bundle exists at $1,245 if you are committed to the ladder.

Should you start with the entry-level Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate (KCNA, $250, multiple-choice)? Only if Kubernetes is genuinely new to you. Engineers moving into platform work from software, ops or SRE backgrounds usually have enough exposure to aim directly at CKA and spend the difference on lab time.

Layer 2: security and policy — CKS is where you separate from the pack

Here is where the platform engineer's stack diverges from a generic cloud engineer's. Multi-tenant platforms concentrate risk: every namespace, admission policy and supply-chain control you get wrong is inherited by every team on the platform. The Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS) certifies exactly this layer — and it is the scarcest signal in the stack because of its gate: you must hold a current, unexpired CKA before you may even attempt CKS.

The exam mirrors the CKA's format — two hours, hands-on, online proctored, $445 — with a slightly higher 67% passing score. Its domains map directly onto platform guardrail work: minimising microservice vulnerabilities (20%), supply chain security (20%), monitoring, logging and runtime security (20%), cluster setup and hardening (30% combined), and system hardening (10%).

A common confusion worth clearing: the Kubernetes and Cloud Native Security Associate (KCSA, $250, multiple-choice) is not a prerequisite for CKS — only CKA is. KCSA is a reasonable theory primer for the security layer, but on a platform engineer's CV it does not substitute for CKS.

Layer 3: infrastructure as code — Terraform Associate

An IDP that cannot be rebuilt from a repository is not a platform; it is a pet. The HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate certifies the declarative-infrastructure layer, and at $70.50 USD plus taxes it delivers the best signal-per-pound in this whole article. The current exam version is 004, delivered since January 2026 and tested on Terraform 1.12 — a one-hour, online-proctored multiple-choice exam, valid for two years, with no formal prerequisites.

Platform engineers who live in Terraform daily can consider the step up: the Terraform Authoring and Operations Professional, a four-hour lab-based exam at $295 USD (one free retake included) tested against real authoring and operations scenarios. It is one of the few hands-on IaC credentials on the market, and on a senior platform CV it reinforces the same "proven at a terminal" theme as CKA and CKS. Treat it as a later addition, not a starting point — HashiCorp itself recommends the Associate plus production experience first.

Layer 4: the cloud underneath — one architecture credential, chosen by employer

Your platform abstracts a cloud, so you need certified fluency in that cloud — but exactly one credential here is enough, and it should follow your employer's (or target employer's) provider rather than any league table.

On AWS, the natural pick is the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03): 65 questions, 130 minutes, $150 USD, passing at 720 scaled, valid three years, with no prerequisites. Architecture is the right lens — platform engineers make VPC, IAM and managed-service decisions constantly — and AWS's 50% discount voucher after any pass cheapens later additions such as the DevOps Engineer – Professional if your role grows into it. Timed runs through the AWS Solutions Architect – Associate practice questions are a sensible readiness check before spending the fee, and reviewing which domains you miss tells you where your platform blind spots are.

On Google Cloud, the Professional Cloud Architect plays the equivalent role (see the Google Professional Cloud Architect exam page for question practice); on Azure, the administrator and architect tracks do — verify current formats and fees on each provider's site, as they change more often than CNCF's. What about the portal, pipelines and everything else?

The upper layers of an IDP — developer portals such as Backstage, CI/CD, GitOps tooling, observability — are certifiable only patchily, and that is fine. A GitHub Actions certification (GH-200, $99 USD, delivered via Pearson VUE since July 2025) is a reasonable low-cost add-on for the pipeline layer if your platform standardises on GitHub. For most of the rest, the honest advice is that no certification yet carries weight: demonstrate the portal and GitOps layers with a public reference implementation instead — a repository that stands up a miniature IDP end to end is worth more in a platform engineering interview than any badge for those layers. Do not pay for legacy container credentials either: the Docker Certified Associate is discontinued with no successor, and its appearance on a recommendation list is a reliable staleness marker.

A readiness checklist before you book anything

Platform engineering exams — especially the hands-on CNCF pair — punish premature booking. Run through this honestly first:

  • Cluster hours. You have built, broken and repaired Kubernetes clusters yourself (not only consumed a managed one), including networking and storage misconfigurations.
  • Terminal speed. You can work in vim or an equivalent editor, use kubectl aliases and read documentation quickly — the two-hour clock is a real constraint.
  • IaC habit. Your last several personal or work environments were created from Terraform code you wrote, not console clicks.
  • Security vocabulary. You can explain RBAC, Pod Security Standards, network policies and image-supply-chain risks without notes (a CKS gate, but also an interview gate).
  • Simulator evidence. You have completed timed practice runs and reviewed every miss by domain — for CNCF exams via the included killer.sh sessions, and for the multiple-choice cloud layer via full-length mock exams — resisting the urge to re-run until the questions are memorised, which inflates scores without adding skill.
  • Renewal plan. You have noted that CNCF credentials last two years and cloud credentials typically three, and sequenced so the stack stays simultaneously valid when you job-hunt.

If two or more boxes are unticked, spend a month in the lab before spending money on a seat.

Sequencing and budget: the whole stack in one plan

A realistic order for an engineer entering platform work: cloud architecture associate first (it underpins everything and its three-year clock is the most forgiving), CKA second, Terraform Associate third — it slots easily between larger preparations — and CKS last, once the CKA is in hand and you are doing security-relevant platform work daily. At list prices that is roughly $1,110 USD before taxes for the four core exams ($150 + $445 + $70.50 + $445), reduced in practice by AWS's 50% voucher and the Linux Foundation's recurring sales.

On the return side, no source publishes a platform-engineer-specific certification premium, and you should distrust any figure claiming one. The nearest well-sourced benchmark is general DevOps engineering pay, which the role typically meets or exceeds in market positioning: US averages of roughly $145,271 (Glassdoor) and $133,662 (Indeed) as of August 2026, with Robert Half's 2026 guide listing a $145,750 midpoint — all US figures, all varying substantially with location, experience and company.

Frequently asked questions

Is there any dedicated platform engineering certification at all?

Nothing with broad employer recognition as of 2026. The role is certified by proxy — Kubernetes, IaC, cloud and security credentials — plus demonstrable IDP work. Treat any "certified platform engineer" title from a small training vendor as coursework, not a market signal.

CKA or CKAD for platform engineering?

CKA. Platform engineers run clusters; CKAD certifies building applications on them. CKA is also the only route to CKS, which is the stack's real differentiator.

Do these certifications expire quickly?

CNCF credentials (CKA, CKS, KCNA, KCSA) are valid two years for anything earned since April 2024, and renewal means retaking the current exam — there is no continuing-education route. Terraform Associate is likewise two years; AWS credentials run three.

Can I skip the cloud certification if my platform is entirely on-prem?

You can deprioritise it, but few platforms stay entirely on-prem, and cloud architecture literacy shapes hiring filters regardless. If your estate is genuinely datacentre-bound, weight the infrastructure engineering credentials more heavily instead.

Certify the platform you intend to build: one cloud architecture credential for the foundation, CKA for the cluster, Terraform Associate for the code that describes it all, and CKS for the guardrails that make multi-tenancy safe. Four exams, roughly a year of deliberate effort, and every one of them maps to a layer you will touch weekly in the job.
